WASHINGTON — Of all the things President-elect Barack Obama needs right now, one of them surely isn't a new set of lofty expectations on his well-burdened shoulders. But recent attention to Obama's on-and-off smoking habit has pinned a new kind of audacious hope to him. Anti-smoking advocates are counting on Obama as a role model for others trying to kick the habit, showing them _ and himself _ that while it's hard, all things are indeed possible in America.

More pressure? One imagines the very thought might send Obama back to the privacy of his yard to light up. In seriousness, though, his familiar plight _ a former smoker who says he's quit, but admittedly falls off the wagon _ is potentially "the ultimate teachable moment," as one anti-smoking advocate puts it.

"It's a wonderful opportunity," says Cheryl Healton, president of the American Legacy Foundation, a Washington-based group that seeks to prevent smoking among young people. "The president-elect is in a position to help people understand that it's difficult to quit, and to encourage the 43 million adult Americans who smoke to join him in his efforts."

Obama can perhaps thank Tom Brokaw for renewing the chatter about his smoking habit. On NBC's "Meet the Press," Brokaw noted Obama had "ducked" the smoking question previously, and asked if he'd indeed quit, noting the White House is a no-smoking zone. (And Obama has his incoming secretary of state, former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, to thank for THAT.)

"I have," Obama said. "What I said was that there are times where I have fallen off the wagon."

"Wait a minute," said Brokaw, "that means you haven't stopped."

"Fair enough," Obama said. "What I would say is that I have done a terrific job under the circumstances of making myself much healthier. And I think that you will not see any violations of these rules in the White House."

Hmm. Immediately his response was seen as full of holes. (What about OUTSIDE the White House? What about UNSEEN violations?) As, of course, it was. And smokers understood it well.

"I totally get it," says Josh Abrams, 28, who works in advertising sales in New York. "He leaves it open, so it wouldn't make him a liar if he were seen with a cigarette."

"I do the same thing," says Abrams, who like Obama is quitting partly for domestic reasons (Michelle Obama demanded that her husband quit; Abrams' fiancee, Cori, has done the same). "When people ask, I say, 'I'm on my way.' 'I'm in the process.' 'I'm getting there.'"

Abrams does have a looming deadline: the end of 2008. If he fails, he knows his fiancee will be sorely disappointed.

But let's face it, that's nothing compared to letting down an entire nation.

And many have high hopes, among them at least one newspaper's editorial board. "With New Year's almost upon us, and quitting bound to top many a resolution list, the nation's smokers _ and possibly future ones _ might be expected to turn their eyes to Obama," the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote this week. "And here, we hope, the president-elect will _ with the loving encouragement of his wife and daughters, no doubt _ set an example that will lead him and other Americans to healthier living."

A similar hope, albeit with no implied timetable, comes from Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

"He's shown a firm commitment to beat this addiction even though no one could have tried under more stressful circumstances," Myers says. "It takes courage to admit failure, but even more courage to pledge to succeed."

One might think, given Obama's clear ability to influence children in many ways, not to mention his own two daughters, that anti-smoking advocates would find him a disappointment on this issue.

Yet they say his foible makes him more human, and better able to teach by example.

"I cheered when I saw him acknowledge to Tom Brokaw the very human reaction that he's fallen off the wagon," says Myers. And the fact that he has two young daughters? "That makes him an even better role model."

If he occasionally lights up, he won't be the most recent White House occupant to do so. First lady Laura Bush, who quit a lifelong smoking habit at least a decade ago, reportedly will bum a cigarette from friends on occasion.

All the positive wishes sent out to Obama might be just the motivator he needs to close the deal. Or maybe not, says Dr. David Jorenby, a specialist in smoking cessation.

"Some smokers who are trying to quit actively want people to check up on them," says Jorenby, a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. "For others, it drives them up the wall. One size does not fit all."

Obama has done a lot right, says Jorenby. First, he hasn't tried to go cold turkey, but rather is using nicotine replacement, in the form of Nicorette. Those using the gum are 1 1/2 times more likely to quit than those using a placebo, health officials have found.

Even more important, Obama keeps trying. "Relapsing is very common," Jorenby says, with a typical smoker making four to six attempts before getting it right. (Healton puts it even higher, at eight to 11 attempts.)

One common reaction to Obama's smoking is that it's a mystifying contradiction to the rest of his personality _ to the famous discipline that keeps him working out every single day, and helped him run one of the more successful campaigns in U.S. politics.

Jorenby says such logic is a fallacy. "They're not mutually exclusive," he says of discipline and smoking. For one thing, a cigarette often helps smokers concentrate _ one reason it's so hard to stop. "The thought of not being able to think clearly is terrifying to them," he says.

And also, people often ignore the fact that tobacco addiction is a chemical dependency. "This is not simply a bad habit that one uses willpower to stamp out," he says.

At least one observer says we all need to leave Obama alone. In fact, wrote Ron Rosenbaum on Slate.com recently, our lives may depend on it.

Tongue in cheek, Rosenbaum imagines a day in the winter of 2009 when an international crisis has erupted. "Do you want Barack Obama, the guy who has his finger on our nuclear trigger ... all irritable, his nerves and famously smooth temper on edge?"

"Give Obama a break," writes Rosenbaum, who makes clear he's not advocating cigarettes for others. "A smoking break."

These are the flaws that make Obama imperfect yet folks think that his supporters see him as some perfect messiah I have no clue where they ever get that because he is not self righteous or judgemental at all. So I dont know where they get it. I think folks just create fantasy in their heads. You brainwash them with nonsense and they believe it even though there is evidence to the contrary.

I thought the interview was amusing because Tom Brokaw asked PE Obama what he was going to do about, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Russia and terrorism. Then Brokaw preceded with the economy, health care, taxes. Still more questions, what's your thoughts on the bailouts for wall street, the housing collapse, the auto bridge loans. Brokaw, then looks into PE Obama eyes and states the country is looking to you for all the answers and the world is on your shoulders. But, I have one more question, will you smoke in the White house? Sounds crazy doesn't it? Because it is crazy. The current administration is leaving and taking a trillion of the taxpayers money with them. This country is on the brink of disaster and Bush is not worried one bit. The masses of American people don't seem to be worried either. However, some seem to be preoccupied with PE Obama smoking. People need to get their priorities straight. If PE Obama takes a smoke in the Rose Garden I don't care. I'm more concerned about whether there will be an America for our future children.

The ugly myth of the "role model" raises it's ugly head once again. People are human , with human fraility. We are supposed to admire and mirror charactor TRAITS, not the entire human being. This media exposure of the subjects feet of clay destroys lives and places ridiculous unobtainable standards on human beings.

Does Laura Bush still smoke? Was there ever any kind of pressure on her to quit?

I do CARE if he smokes. I used to smok for 20 years and I quit cold turkey.

I care because I want him to be healthy. Stress leads to more and frequents smoking. But, I do realize that it is his personal choice and freedom to do what he wishes with his life and his lungs.

You all are pathetic. Don't you see how much of a fool he would look like preaching for National Healthcare and "Preventative" healthcare while smoking? Essentially, he would be part of the problem with healthcare costs today?

You are all so star struck you are not even being rational...

Smoking is not the only problem with healthcare costs today, you are the one being a little irrational and short sighted.

Give me a break! That are thousands of doctors who smoke and tell others to quit. Stop being so sanctimonius. You are no better than PETA telling us not to eat meat

PLEASE!!! First. You do not live forever. Life is not infinite. Let the man seek his pleasures---it is his time, life, and lungs. I think the world economy might trump the issue of Obama smoking or not. Could you find a smaller needle in a proverbial haystack, on this day, December 13, 2008????? Go play save the world some other way , for crying out loud, you overly- idealistic baboons.

Leave the guy alone with his smoking..He has a lot on his plate trying to clean up this mess and he is going to need all the calm he can muster. By the way, when you start taking the bill of rights from one segment of the pop. (smokers) and making them second class citizens, how is that different than forcing blacks to the back of the bus..Bill of rights is for all even gays.. America got to be the great country she is because we are a melting pot trying to be fair to all..We just got sidetracked by this adminstration..

We hired him as our President, not a role model for every___ ___ thing! We need him focused; not distracted by trying to stop chewing his gingernails, or smoking, or cutting out fat or coffee...

I totally agree with bayside. I've never smoked but have been around numerous relatives who are smokers trying to quit. Not an easy thing to break from and the process (of quitting) can be quite stressful. He has enough problems on his plate. If he can quit, great! If not, it's not gonna kill him while in office in the next 4-8 years. I hope he can, for his own health benefit. But NOBODY should demand that he quit because he has to set examples. That is quite enough!

Seriously, with the Country falling apart at the seams from the economic crisis, the war, etc. don't we really have more to concern ourselves with than whether Barack Obama smokes a cigaette or not.

I just wish these non-smoking militants would just shut up. He's an adult and since smoking is still legal, he can smoke if he wants to. I grew up in a house with both parents smoking and I don't remember ever thinking about it all. Sure smoking is bad for you, but so is eating sugar and salt, staying up too late, and drinking alcohol. I have just about had it up to here with hearing the lectures from strangers, who now have another way to think they are better than you !

How do you get to such an angry place from such a mild mannered request as presented by Ms Healton? This isn't about anyone thinking they're better than anyone else. It's about being healthy or unhealthy.

If diabetes awareness groups work to discourage sugar intake and hypertension awareness groups work in the same way regarding salt, what's wrong with that? There is one difference though: there is no second hand intake of salt and sugar. Even the destructiveness of enabling and living with an alcoholic is not on the same level as second hand smoke.

Mr. Obama. If you want to smoke in WH do it. As Nixon said..anything a POTUS does is legal. Have the girls put gum under all the tables, and burn a couple holes on some furniture in Lincoln Room.

1oo years from now some visitor will muse when he sees those holes .."hey Obama did that". After all, Bush snorted in the WH during Daddy's reign of 'no taxes' so what's a little smoke.

My gosh, it's his life and choice - not ours. I can't believe that even this is a cause for everyone to weigh in on and the man should be able to make his own decisions without everyone telling him what to do.

the tone of the request does not seem so much antagonistic as hopeful that Obama will demonstrate to others that the nasty habit can be and should be kicked for the health and well being of himself and others.

Smokers generally justify their negative impact on the world with the free choice issue. Of course one is free to choose whether or not to smoke. It's not illegal. However, second hand smoke harms (triggers asthma in some) and sometimes kills (heart and lung), and even if your gosh has the right to do harm, should he or she do so? People are requesting that Obama lead on this issue by example which is much easier than fixing the foreign and domestic crises we're facing.

I am a smoker, heading into my 80th year of this earthly sojourn. I've spent many hundreds of dollars on secession programs and they do work . . . for a while. Quitting is not the problem, staying quit is! I know folks who have just made the decision to quit, throw their pack in the garbage and never look back. They are the lucky ones. For others, like me, though we try, and try again, the addiction is hard to beat. I hope no young person will take up smoking, but that's no reason to treat all smokers like criminals. I get dam-ned tired of all the holier than thou antics from those who've never had to deal with this addiction. The more they belly-ache about it the more I want to light up. Go ahead and have your cigs, Obama. You don't have to be everything to everyone. People should think for themselves and not follow anyone. Smoking is bad. So? There are far worse vices. Get over it people.

And many more years to you!
This "health obsessed society" is responsible for the removal of good fiction and illusration in magazines....( loss, diminishment of a profession)
.in favor of 'no-read" exercise pix, and tales of exotic illnesses that only cover a very small portion of people........BOOOOOORRRRRRING, leading to a non reading , ILLITERATE population!
This leads to the inability to chose good leaders, which leads to the danger of starving or freezing to death in old age!
AND YOU want Obama to fix it for you while heaping EXTRA burden in his shoulders....
HOW VEIN!

Congratulations, kali! Despite your smoking, you must be doing something right.

It sounds like Obama is an occasional smoker;he bums a cigarette every so often when he feels stressed. I don't have a problem with that. He's going to have so much on his plate come January 20, I won't grudge him the occasional cigarette.
