Blagojevich Deeply In Debt: Owes Over $1M In Legal Fees, Mortgage Payments

A criminal complaint isn't the only problem Governor Rod Blagojevich and his wife have to deal with. CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports their financial future looks as dim as any political future.

According to published reports, when times were good for Governor Blagojevich and his wife, the couple made nearly a million dollars a year. Most of it was from Patti Blagojevich's real estate commissions. As of late, Patti's position as a fundraiser for a social service agency makes her only $80,000 dollar a year. Her salary combined with her husband's yearly salary of $177,000 is just over a quarter of a million dollars. That is not bad for most, but perhaps not good enough for the governor.

Cindy Canary is with a non partisan public advocacy group. She says the governor seems to be in a good deal of personal financial debt.

Blagojevich owes $750,000 in first and second mortgages on his Chicago home, another $150,000 on a Washington condo, and $500,000 in legal fees and if he decides to fight his latest legal problems, Canary says corruption cases can cost millions of dollars.

Are anyone else's eyes popping out that according to this article Blagojevitch stood to collect $177,000 dollars a year in state pension from the age of 62 on? Wow. And everyone's all pissed off about the auto workers' benefits. Did I read this right? Still rubbing my eyes and looking again.

If true that means citizens pay this pension with their taxes....every year till he dies. And that means we are paying this kind of pension to retired government people all over the country. Come to think of it, I remember an article months ago about how every senator has the best health care money can buy till they die, in office or not. No wonder we can't get them interested in national health care. They wouldn't have a clue what it's all about.

If we continue to insure everlasting security to our representatives in government how can we expect them to understand what it's like to live without a net?

that is a good suggestion. there are probably some that he is responsible for building before he shut down the state gvmt over his hissy fit with Madigan.

He wouldn't have mortgage problems if he had moved into the mansion in Springfied. Potty mouth Patti put the kyebosh on that in his first term, the schools weren't good enough for her kids. Hey, isn't that one of the goals as the leader of the state? Not only have the Blago's let the mansion go to waste Blago takes a helicopter downstate when he feels like it on the public dime.
