Al Franken received a potentially major boost towards his hopes of becoming Senator on Friday, when Minnesota state officials ruled that absentee ballots rejected because of clerical or administrative errors should, in the end, be counted.

The decision by the state canvassing board -- which was unanimous -- is, essentially, an official request for county officials to go back and count the wrongfully rejected absentee votes. This process has already begun in many counties and could portend sizeable gains for Franken.

The Democratic challenger has spent the past few weeks demanding that the state review the approximately 1,500 absentee ballots that they contend were unlawfully dismissed. Many of these votes have come from traditionally Democratic locales where, for one reason or another, voters are more likely to make clerical errors when completing their ballots.

The state has set December 19th as the end date for the sorting and counting of this absentee ballot pool (hardly a restrictive time frame for completing the task). The Coleman campaign retains the right to appeal the decision to a district or state court.

With the hand recount over in the state's Senate race, Franken's campaign claims to be clinging to a four-vote lead. This count, however, assumes that none of the challenges to ballots during the recount process will be upheld. In short: the race is incredibly tight. The inclusion of this pool of rejected absentee ballots could very well push Franken into the Senate.

UPDATE: The Franken campaign got more good news from the canvass board hearing. The state had, during the recount process, been unable to locate 133 ballots from the Minneapolis area. But rather than disregarding these votes, officials decided that they will use the results from Election Day.

Coleman needs 250 Votes ... real bad.
Anybody got any? No. We counted them all. Oh, ... we counted then all.
Well, ... if we counted them all; then ... it's over; right? Al Franken has 250 more votes than Norm Coleman.
That's two hundred fifty, Norm. He had 49, now he's up (ahem) uh, ... he's up by 250.
Try what? No. We're not calling David Copperfield and seeing if her can make any of Franken's disappear or any more come-out of thin air.
Norm. Two-fifty. Two-five-oh. The Big duce and a half.
Hey, Norm. Remember Kate Smith? That big broad what sung God Bless America!
She's on the phone. Want's to know if you want her to get ready? She says she's ready, Norm. Just say the word.
Say the words, Norm. You're done. Finished. Toast. Cooked. Stick a fork in you, baby; you're done!
"God Bless America, Land that I love Stand beside her, and guide her ...Thru the night with a light from above. "

When it's all said and done I hope the Court rules that not only will each and every ballot cast be counted, but each one of the absentee ballots vote for the Candidates running for Senate get read aloud by BOTH of the candidates involved in the recount, on live radio and TV! That right-there, is TV I would pay to watch.
"OK, here's the next absentee ballot to be counted. Let's hold the ballot up for the Camera to see. There's the close-up ... and as you can see the vote is for Al Franken. Let me hand the ballot over to Mr. Franken to read. Here you are, Mr. Franken, please." "Thank you. The vote is cast for Al Franken." "Now, if you hand the ballot to Senator Coleman. Senator?" "al franken" "Louder!" "Al Franken."

Some background on Coleman is interesting reading, from 2005 Senate Committee hearings, other stuff when you Google George Galloway. Al's gotta win!

Senator Coleman: You're sworn to defend the Constitution from all threats; foreign and domestic. You trying to stop votes from getting counted is a threat to the Constitution. You're in trouble. The tight race you are in with Mr. Franken puts you in the spotlight. People outside of Minnesota have learned a lot about you since you started bellyaching about this Election Recount. What else should we expect from the crook you know you are? Now, you become a threat to the Nation. People outside of Minnesota are going to start looking at you under a powerful microscope. There's something other than you assaulting the Democratic Process that stinks about you, Senator Coleman, and there's a good many who want to rid The Senate of the stench that brought-about these hard times. Your best move right now, is to start behaving more like a United States Senator and champion for the rights of Minnesota Voters to have all their ballots counted in the election process; rather than acting like you know you're in big trouble and will use any technicality or loophole to avoid being unseated, investigated, sanctioned, or indicted, convicted and sentenced like you know you ought to be! Smart people don't want you returned back to The Senate after all which you have done -- or, worse -- failed to do! The Nation does not need another criminal on either side of the aisle in The Senate. All who are guilty of crimes and misdemeanors belong in Jail!

Yes, Rick. People who get their news online, people who blog, know all about the fishy smell around Coleman. But there is an odd silence in the msm regarding the investigation into Coleman's possible ethics violations. While they machinate wildly trying to draw Obama into the Blagojevitch scandal, not a word, not one word, about the fact that the FBI is investigating Coleman.

I'm not saying the msm is in the tank for Republicans, not at all. I'm saying the msm is the tank for ignorance, lack of honorable priorities, lack of investigative skills, lack of committment to anything beyond their ratings. They all jump on the Blagojevitch scandal like sheep, and ignore what's bubbling up all around them.

This is exactly why they failed to challenge Bush's march to war in Iraq. Flat out, superficial, one inch deep knowledge of what's going on in this world.

I love Al. He was a pain in the ass to try and listen to on my way to work though. He does not have voice and diction for talk radio. Never would complete a sentence, his brain always crossed into next thought before finishing first one....stuttered alot. But I love him.

The righties must just be squirming and boiling with the thought that all of Al's pushing and working and challenging has actually gotten a true count in an election.

I wonder how they feel now that one has been "stolen" from them. Heh.

As one of many who have been disgusted with elections since 2000 Al Franken is single handedly restoring faith in our democratic electorial process. Win or lose, keep pushing, Al! You are going to win and restore our faith in the process! Give 'em hell, Al!!
Besides, who wants to see that horse faced rethug goldigger any more? Even if he pulls it out he will be forever tainted. Hey, maybe he can get a double room with cheney or rummy IN HELL!!!
