Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. answers questions about a report involving his brother Jonathan outside his house in Chicago, Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. As calls for the impeachment Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich intensified,, the Chicago Tribune reports in a story for Friday's editions, citing unnamed sources, that businessman Raghuveer Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi told attendees at an Oct. 31 meeting that they needed to raise the money for the governor to ensure Jackson's appointment. The Oct. 31 meeting led to a Blagojevich fundraiser held Saturday that was co-sponsored by Nayak. The governor attended, as did Jackson's brother Jonathan, who went into business with Nayak several years ago, according to the newspaper report. (AP Photo/Paul Beaty)

CHICAGO — A fundraiser held by Indian-American businessmen three days before Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on corruption charges emerged Friday as a potentially key event in the federal investigation into whether he tried to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

Questions are being raised about last Saturday's event for Blagojevich because Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s brother, Jonathan, was among those attending. The Indian community has a long history of supporting the Jackson family's political aspirations, and the congressman has been clear about his interest in succeeding Obama.

Rep. Jackson, however, flatly denied that he or his brother were involved in a scheme for Blagojevich to peddle the Senate seat in return for up to $1.5 million in political contributions.

The congressman also said neither his brother nor his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, served as any kind of emissary for discussions with the governor.

"Clearly, a scheme had been hatched in the mind of the governor," Jackson said.

The Chicago Tribune reported Friday that some of the businessmen who gathered at the Dec. 6 fundraiser discussed the prospect of raising at least $1 million for the governor in return for Jackson getting the Senate seat.

Iftekhar Shareef, former president of the Federation of Indian Associations and a prominent businessman, said he attended the fundraiser and sat at the same table as the governor, Jonathan Jackson and at least two prominent Indian businessmen.

Nobody discussed the Senate seat at the table, Shareef said.

Story continues below

"Honestly, I never saw if there was any talk about Jesse Jr.'s Senate seat or anything," Shareef said. "Who knows? It might be among themselves."

Blagojevich was arrested at his home Tuesday, one day after he met with Jackson for 90 minutes to discuss Jackson's interest in the seat. The congressman has been identified as "Senate Candidate 5" in the federal complaint against Blagojevich.

Jackson said Blagojevich never promised him the Senate seat. "Far from it," he told The Associated Press. "It was clear from the reading of the complaint, my candidacy never had a chance under his process."

Any scheme to win Jackson the appointment may have been hatched shortly before Oct. 31, according to the complaint.

During a recorded conversation that day, the governor recalled "an earlier approach" by an associate of Senate Candidate 5: "We were approached 'pay to play.' That, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him a senator."

The Tribune reported that Blagojevich made an appearance at an Oct. 31 luncheon at the India House restaurant in suburban Schaumburg, an event sponsored by businessman Raghuveer Nayak.

Ravi Rawat, manager of the India House restaurant, said there were 35 participants at the luncheon and that Nayak paid the bill. He said he was unaware of what was discussed at the closed-door session, though Shareef said it was held to plan last week's Blagojevich fundraiser.

According to state campaign finance reports, Nayak and his company, Rogers Park One Day Surgi-Center, gave $117,000 to Blagojevich's campaign fund from 2001 through November 2006.

Raghuveer and Anita Nayak also contributed $20,300 to Jackson's campaigns from 2000 to 2008, Federal Election Commission documents indicate.

At least two other businessmen and a Blagojevich aide identified as being part of Saturday's fundraiser have donated to Blagojevich and Jackson, sometimes with their wives.

Harish and Renuka Bhatt have given $86,000 to Blagojevich, including $4,000 from the Association of Indian Pharmacists, which lists the same address as Bhatt.

Blagojevich has also received $18,500 from Babu Patel or his firm, Patel Realty, from 2000 through June. Patel gave $1,000 to Jackson in 2007. Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi gave Jackson $500 between 2005 and 2008.

According to Shareef, both Nayak and Bedi sat with the governor and Jonathan Jackson during the fundraiser.

Messages left with Nayak, the Bhatts, Patel and Bedi were not returned Friday.

On Dec. 4, two days before the fundraiser, prosecutors say Blagojevich told someone identified only as "Adviser B" that he was giving Jackson greater consideration for the seat because, "among other reasons," he would raise money for a Blagojevich re-election run and might even provide some cash upfront.

In another taped call, Blagojevich said he was elevating Jackson on his list of candidates because he "might be able to cut a deal" that could give the governor "something tangible up front."

"Blagojevich noted he was going to meet with 'Senate Candidate 5' in the next few days," the complaint says.

In fact, the governor and Jackson met to discuss the Senate seat four days later, on Monday. Blagojevich was arrested at his home the next morning.

I don't like Jessie Jackson Sr....never had. But, I do like JJ, Jr, and I think he is innocent.....this is to eliminate him completely, and I hope it doesn't. If he is qualified there is no reason he shouldn't be considered as well as the others.

If you think the Clintons didn't do a "quid pro quo" -- then you must be comatose! Maybe they're better and more experienced and leave no fingerprints, but they definitely made a deal!

I'll campaign for you if you raise funds for me, and give me the most prestigious position in your cabinet!

larazon- you're right. there are shades of quid pro quo. the essence of politics is politicking, but I think Blago is different, and the Obama team obviously knew the difference (all they wanted to give was their appreciation). as a pundit said the other night Blago practically had the senate seat on ebay.

Okay, so Blogo is plain st00pid and inartful. Why, do you think? Maybe because he saw how everyone wheels and deals and figured he should get a piece of the action too?

Some just do it better than others, but everyone does it. Besides he didn't actually transact anything, he only boasted and threatened to do these things. Why didn't the fed wait for him to take action? I'll tell you why, because under no circumstances did the right want another black man in the Senate! That's why!

They stopped him in time to derail JJjr!

For those who think there is such a thing as scrupulously clean politicians - I think we are stating to see that in fact to even play in the game with the big boys you are playing with a ball that has been thru the mud and there is no way you can play without getting dirty. Some polician actually love the mud wrestling more than the ballgame. Blago seems to be of this type.

I feel genuinely bad about this. There's a slim chance Jackson didn't know what was going on, but this looks pretty bad.

I agree. This does look bad. I also feel bad about it, because JJJ is so likeable, but we can't tolerate this kind of behavior -- even though it probably goes on so much more than we know.

Regardless of whether Jesse Jr. was directly involved or not...it's pretty much over for him. The stink of Blago and Lady Macbeth have killed his chances. He should step back, remove himself from the running and try to restore his reputation - going after the senate seat at this time makes him look pretty bad.

You're right - it makes it look like he is more interested in getting himself that Senate seat more than in helping ensure justice is served for his home state.

OK OBAMA SUPPORTS ~ HERE WE GO.

He said this was not going to be easy.
He said they will try to divide us.
He said so much more.

Stay strong everybody, this storm of distractions via drama has only just begun.

YES WE CAN.

I adore Obama, but this is not his mess. It's Jackson's and Blago's. This is a legitimate issue, not a distraction. It's just not OBAMA's issue. We have a world in need of saving. Jackson needs to talk and let this issue close itself up.

I had a feeling that with Obama's careful statements, he was trying to give everyone the space to come forward, and I'm sorry Jackson wasn't a little bit more forthcoming.

Real Obama supporters feel even better about our Pres. Elect right now. The bad guy provided valuable insight to how much of a "good guy" Obama really is.

If we actually think for a moment--would Obama located his transition office to Chicago; were tons of nosy reporters were sure to follow--if he wasn't iron clad? I think not.

Remember how angry and defensive the McCain camp became when a slew of reporters went to Alaska to research Palin, even when most of America was just trying to find out about her?

You don't invite bloodhounds to your backyard if you have bodies buried there--unless of course you are Hot Rod.

Jackson's chances for the Senate seat are OVER regardless of what is or is not true. If he keeps his current position it will be a miracle.

Why Obama said none of his people contacted B's office is beyond me. It is perfectly normal for a senator (never mind President elect) to have preferences regarding who replaces him. The Obama team needs to wake up and realize when there are issues playing too cute by half only insults the American people. Everyone KNOWS his staff had SOME contact so why not just say that and end the drama ? It doesn't speak well to the " transparency" Obama talks about. I guess campaigning on transparency is far easier than actually being transparent. They have been exonerated as far as "buying" anything so what is the big deal. This is a one day story as far as Obama is concerned but because he was not upfront about it, now it continues day after day.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:16 AM on 12/12/2008

Obama NEVER said none of his people had contact with the Governors office what he said was that NONE of his people participated in any pay to play scheme. Get your facts right!

Obama said he was in the process of speaking with every member of his team to find out who, what and when if any contact was made. It is already known that Raul Emanuel probably had some contact with Governor office it is also BELIEVED that there is a possibility he turned in Blago for trying to extract funding for the seat. It is also possible that Obama's team is working with FBI and as such cannot speak freely until the investigation is complete, so as not to compromise the situation. As it has been noted by Fitzgerald, Obama is NOT INVOLVED in pay to play and this was backed up on tape with Blago stated all Obama team was willing to give was a thank you. Know your FACTS!

One thing I notice in this whole debacle is I don't see any democrats whining about the "media" or political opponents causing Blago's woes. Contrast that with recent "stand by your man" no-matter-what bluster from repugs.

NOWHERE in the story is there any intimation that JJJr did anything illegal or questionable.

People who supported him did this.

There is no hint that he asked them to, or that he knew they did it.

Yet his career is in tatters because of right-wing guilt-by-association.

Sorry, but Jesse has implicated himself. He made no bones about the fact that he wanted the senate seat. It's not unusual in politics to have someone else work behind the scene on your behalf. You don't let your brother's business partner campaign for a dirty gov. If that occurs you have to distance yourself from the group publicity. Jesse did not do that so he can kiss that seat good-by.

What the problem is here will be perception. With Jesse Sr., talking on the mic, and saying other things against Obama, I feel as though he is involved and did not allow Jr. to know what was going on. They seem to clash a lot over politics, Jesse Sr., having a lot more years being involved in the criminal politicking of the state than his son. I believe that Jr., is paying the price for the things his dad has done. Sin is always visited on the children of a corrupt father. I feel sorry for the son, his career in politics is over, due to this! Since Jesse Sr., did not make it, he felt he could help his boy achieve Obama's position eventually and ride on his coattails. Too bad...I think we are losing another straight guy who wanted to help rebuild Illnois and American politics, but because of his family cannot do that. Any connection to Daddy Jackson now will be forever suspect.

This is not looking very good for Jackson, but we should 'suspend' judgment until ALL of the facts are examined!

Unfortunately, politics is frequently about 'quid pro quo' and Jackson "may" have thought: "this is what has to be done" to get the appointment, and as long as the 'fund-raising' dollars weren't going directly into the pocket of Rod Blagojevich, Jackson may have thought this was nothing more than "typical Chicago politics".

But as "we" all know - quid pro quo among public servants is WRONG WRONG WRONG and now, it's time everyone pays the piper!

Our system of government is designed for corruption! There should be a pool of qualified people made up of the most experienced and brightest leaders from all walks of life and selection should take place by a lottery draw! The only voting that should take place is whether we want to keep a serving Senator or get rid of him/her! If he does a good job(for the first 4 years) and is willing to stay we vote to keep him for another 4. Every year there should be an evaluation of performance by the electorate just like is done in industry... if his rating falls below 50% for 2 consecutive years, a special vote shall be implemented for his ousting. The Constitution is outdated; we are not dinosaurs stuck in time; why do we worship a scrawl instead of adapting it to the realities of our time? Horse and buggy may have been the best form of transportation for their time but we have improved on that and now see it as a relic... keep the useful parts of the constitution(like the 4 wheels on the buggy) but make it more appropriate for our current needs.
