Colbert Report   |   December 12, 2008 08:10 AM

Michael Phelps stopped by "The Colbert Report" to promote his book "No Limits."

In order to interview him, Colbert put his Emmy around his neck like a medal. He also promised Phelps he would teach him ice dancing so he has gold-medal chances in 2010.

Phelps also said that right now he is the least in-shape person in the world.

Colbert meanwhile, asked if goes through the motions of swimming, even when he's on land. "Is making love for you like doing the butterfly? Does a gun have to go off first?"

Paul Bennedict ( Bentley on the classic sutcom The Jeffersons ) and Andre the Giant had a baby...Michael Phelps.

Lay off Phelps. He has spent the last 5 years sucking down Chlorine not going to charm school.
There is a reason he is successful at swimming and not other things.

I thought this was a great interview by Colbert. I enjoyed it immensely and I'm not one of those who follows Phelps' every move.

Jeeeez people, lay off him already. A few points...

1. Look he's an athlete, he never claimed to be a comedic genius.
2. Sure, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if book was probably written by a ghost writer. But even then it would have most likely been the publishing houses tripping over themselves to get him to sign. I seriously doubt that HE he out searching for a publicist.
3. Shows are calling him because he is famous and people are interested in him. Do you think he is begging these shows to make an appearance? In that case, what would YOU do? Say "no, I'm just not that funny"? Get real.

and finally...

4. If you have to be unreasonably critical of Phelps, could it be YOU that is a bit insecure and has issues to deal with?

No he's not a comedian...he's a swimmer who broke a bunch of records...and a seemingly decent guy. Appreciate him for what he is and applaud him for what he has accomplished. Wouldn't yuou want the same?

My question is - why is it any of Colbert's business??
Why is the media obsessed with people sexual habits?
If they know they only blast away at someone's privacy.
HOW RUDE OF COLBERT!!

It was meant to be funny. Stephen backed off after he said it, anyhow.

Ok, he's a kid and expecting him being fast, clean (we hope) and additionally funny might be too much to ask for. But still, wasn't anybody else waiting for Phelps to respond to Colbert's sexual innuendo questions by talking about his special BREASTSTROKE?

Of course. (And really taking off his shirt.)

I am impressed with the fact that Phelps was able to wean himself off ADD medication via swimming.

The criticisms on this thread bewilder me. What are you people criticiizing? He's a swimmer who accomplished something utterly amazing and he's while he's shown on SNL and Colbert that he's not the funniest guy in the world, but he certainly seems good-natured and nice enough.

That was a terrible interview. I don't expect Phelps to be funny or even enlightening because he was a sheltered dork his whole life but he can at least say something. I feel like he is trying to maintain a cool image (as we saw with the god-awful goatee) to go with his god-like body. Dude, just be yourself. Don't worry about inspiring or impressing. Everyone knows people like a humble down home american.

He's not an actor or a comedian. He's a swimmer.
That's what he does and he does it VERY WELL!!

hes also not a writer...he should have better grammar and he should be at least more suave when it comes to interviews...you would think he would practice and try to not come off as a jerk....o wow you won 8 gold metals...how many african children has he dewormed or gave polio shots too? I bet alot less then I have.

Colbert carried that interview. That's heavy lifting.

Did you really expect a sport celebrity to give you anything more than platitudes? "You work hard and you can achieve anything!" Yeah, right, I'll never win a gold medal at the Olympics just because I'm a lazy bum...

Colbert--Gotta love the guy. Regarding the gun and making love--probably not a good Idea for Mr. Phelps. Could be all over in 43.7 seconds (Swiss Timing).

Although his coach would sometimes have him practice, swimming as fast and hard as he could for more than 2 hours straight.

I'm thinking that there might need to be a relay team of women to keep up.

funny, one of my daughters said he could have a great future if they put him in the roll of the next Herman Munster! He does look a lot like Fred Gwen though.

Yes, that's funny, making fun of someone who came so far with disabilties. What the hell is wrong with people like you ? Shows how your daughters are being raised.
