Bayh

Via Open Left, Roll Call reports:

Bayh, who has spoken with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about his initiative, said he is trying to create a faction of moderate Senators who will gather on a weekly basis ahead of the usual Tuesday Democratic Caucus meetings.

Additionally, Bayh envisions inviting outside speakers to address the group, which would also work in concert with third parties that have similar viewpoints, like the Third Way, a nonpartisan progressive think tank.

A Reid spokesman said the Majority Leader was similarly upbeat about the idea.

"Nearly a decade of Republican fiscal irresponsibility has contributed to our current economic crisis," Reid spokesman Jim Manley said in an e-mail statement. "That is why Sen. Reid welcomes Sen. Bayh's decision to form this group. For we know that Sen. Bayh, like all Democrats, is committed to restoring our nation's fiscal and economic health."

Over the past three weeks, Bayh and his staff have reached out to Senators to judge the appetite for such a group.

"I've had some expressions of interest," Bayh said. "I'm going to continue to meet and talk to my colleagues."

Likely targets for Bayh would include moderate Democrats like Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Blanche Lincoln (Ark.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Jim Webb (Va.), and Sen.-elect Mark Warner (Va.).

Steve Benen adds:

In the House, the Blue Dogs are not only overly cozy with corporate lobbyists, this is a coalition reluctant to embrace a progressive vision on issues like climate change, and committed to a financial plan focused on spending reductions and balanced budgets -- precisely when the federal government needs to be doing the opposite.

That Bayh wants a similar group working in the Senate is discouraging, to put it mildly.

Evan, form whatever group you like. But to all of you on Capitol Hill, when PE Obama comes through, move out of the way and let him get this country back on track. This is not the time for anything else. America and Americans are in TROUBLE and no one seems to get it but Obama and his team. We are human beings with our lives mangled because of "so called conservatism" by the republicans and George W. Bush. The budget will get balanced, but NOT RIGHT NOW. People need HELP. Get a freakin' clue. You elected officials are not indespensible. This is not the time to mess with an unhappy electorate.

Looks like Evan Bayh is positioning himself for a run at the WH. He may be expecting the public to turn away from hard left policies after four years. Having stated that, it doesn't look like there will be enough fiscal wiggle room for Obama to indulge his pledges of hard left policies anyway.

Obama may end up as a "blue dog" himself.

Hard to say. His true beliefs remain maddeningly hard to discern, but economic advisors like Summers, Geithner, and Volcker are all of the type you'd expect a blue dog Prez to hire, not mention all the hawkish foreign policy people.

I think the Democratic majority should take a good look at pursuing that "nuclear option" thingy.

Bayh is just trying to "mark his territory." This is a power play, nothing more. If there is a Blue Dog caucus, he'll have plenty of competition to lead it. That competition probably will cause it to fizzle out before it gets started.

Blue Dogs are big obstructionists in the House!

Are they going to be the same way in the Senate. This is just a ploy to get corporate money for their re-election campaigns.

They will block reform like they did not allow impeachment being brought to the table by Nancy Pelosi.

evan, i have a feeling you and uncle rahm will be taking a trip to the woodshed soon.

at least you'd better be.

you might also want to consider moving back to indiana sometime soon, because if you keep this up, you may be unemployed soon.

It won't work anyway, peace. Labour is always trying this 'third way' stuff, it never works.

Heaven forbid that the Democratic party would broaden it base and consider that only progressive ideas are good. What will it take for us to realize that without moderate and conservative voters Obama would not be President. Would the party be better if Indiana had a conservative Republican than Bayh? Grow up and accept that Obama is committed to forming a coalition that spans all shades of political beliefs.

Has the past 8 years of singlemindedness of Republican allegiance taught us nothing? America is the melting pot of cultures. To suggest it should only accept liberal principals is to betray our diversity as a great nation.

The pendulum swung so far to the right that it will take a big swing to the left before it can come back to the center again. For a while, the Dems must be willing to vote together if anything positive is to be done. What we are seeing here is jockeying for power on Bayh's part, nothing more.

We do not need two Republican parties- we had that under Clinton and got NAFTA, repeal of Glass-Steagal, a 99-0 vote against the Kyoto Treaty and on and on.

If Bayh, Lambert-Lincoln, Pryor and the rest want to be Republicans they should come out of the closet now so we can mark them for defeat come election time.

exactly :-)

They give cover to asinine Republican policies -- the current economic crisis, denying women the right to contraception ( but willing to subsidize the "blue" pill ), more willing to accept lobbyist, blocking enviromental policies ( wow, they really are indistinguishable from Republicans )

They are usually from the south. Indiana, with the exception of Indianapolis and a little of northern Indiana is a redneck as any southern state. Bayh is popular with the state that has had at last 4 KKK member Governors because he is a Republican at heart.

BTW- both of my two 'Democratic' Senators are on the list & it makes me want to puke.

I am from Indiana and Even Bayh is a good Democrat. Yes, he is a little more to the right then I would like but in general he is pretty regular. The dems need people like Bayh because they bring leaning rebulicans over to our side. Believe me that Obama could not have won Indiana without Bayh. Let's not give up on Bayh yet.

Some in Congress who I shan't bother to name just like to stand in the way of progress, and stay cozy with their benefactors. I'm not saying Senator Bayh and his group are headed in that direction, but others seem to be having that concern. There's a fine line between cooperation and complicity, but it's usually fairly clear when that line's been crossed. Let's hope Senator Bayh is the cooperative type.

You're putting a pretty heavy burden on Obama. Even a great quarterback has to have a great team to make it to the Super Bowl. Obama's going to need all the help he can get.

With moves such as these, it's just worth a little watching. I agree, Obama can't do everything and be everywhere. A lot can happen in a room. Emanual, Biden etc. will also need to keep eyes open, or assign eyes and ears. Keeps Obama focused on our future.
