Bayh

Via Open Left, Roll Call reports:

Bayh, who has spoken with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about his initiative, said he is trying to create a faction of moderate Senators who will gather on a weekly basis ahead of the usual Tuesday Democratic Caucus meetings.

Additionally, Bayh envisions inviting outside speakers to address the group, which would also work in concert with third parties that have similar viewpoints, like the Third Way, a nonpartisan progressive think tank.

A Reid spokesman said the Majority Leader was similarly upbeat about the idea.

"Nearly a decade of Republican fiscal irresponsibility has contributed to our current economic crisis," Reid spokesman Jim Manley said in an e-mail statement. "That is why Sen. Reid welcomes Sen. Bayh's decision to form this group. For we know that Sen. Bayh, like all Democrats, is committed to restoring our nation's fiscal and economic health."

Over the past three weeks, Bayh and his staff have reached out to Senators to judge the appetite for such a group.

"I've had some expressions of interest," Bayh said. "I'm going to continue to meet and talk to my colleagues."

Likely targets for Bayh would include moderate Democrats like Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Blanche Lincoln (Ark.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Jim Webb (Va.), and Sen.-elect Mark Warner (Va.).

Steve Benen adds:

In the House, the Blue Dogs are not only overly cozy with corporate lobbyists, this is a coalition reluctant to embrace a progressive vision on issues like climate change, and committed to a financial plan focused on spending reductions and balanced budgets -- precisely when the federal government needs to be doing the opposite.

That Bayh wants a similar group working in the Senate is discouraging, to put it mildly.

Just what the Democrats more-or-less in charge of the Senate needed,... a defined group of pseudo-Republicans within the party. Yippee!!!

What famous American Philosopher was it that said,...
"I don't belong to an organized political party,... I am a Democrat"

The idiots, the jesters, and the criminals remain in charge in the Senate.

As a lifelong Hoosier who has been actively involved in Democratic politics here for four decades, Evan Bayh is always consistent: he always disappoints.

diogeron,

As a Hoosier born & raised, who live exclusively in Indiana until 1995, with the bulk of my family still living there and still voting Democrat,...

I know exactly what you mean.

Actually,.. I do get it Shadow,... you don't.

The DLC is mostly composed of Republican-lites. Bayh is just one of those.

There are too many politicians and not enough Government for the people...

Too many committees and not enough action...

Too little accountability and not enough oversight....

Too many republicans and too many democrats and not enough wisdom.

This is not helpful. Now that we have a Democrat in the White House, beady -eyed Bayh wants to make a divisive move to no doubt call attention to himself and make life even more difficult for Obama. Way to go, Bayh, you sure know how to help the dire situation we are in!

These so called blue dogs are going to have to come to terms with some bitter realities. The first being a united democratic party to pass the legislation of the President We The People elected. Evan is not in the Whitehouse, Obama is, and it's his vision we voted for, which is certainly not the vision of a few left over blue dogs. They can have their little meetings and invite speakers, and serve tea and cookies, but on the floor, they have to unite behind the president. There is no wiggle room for a few blue dogs with no b*lls.

Then some other Democrats need to challenge these incumbents in 2010.
Then the Dem voters need to PURGE.

It would be good for the nation if every INCUMBENT of both parties was challenged in a primary. Congress has become a long-term employment agency fueled by lobbyists. Kicking every incumbent out could not be worse than re-electing DO NOTHINGS who kiss up for pork.

These seven Republicans are in the pockets of big oil and big military-industrial complex. But what is most troubling to me about these Republicans is that they were and are enthusiastic supporters of Junior's Constitution busting.

Somebody's positioning himself for a future WH run as a "fiscal conservative." Someone has hitched his badoobies to the hands of Bill and Hillary, and is going to wait this whole Obama thing out.

This is no surprise, although I didn't think he would announce anything this soon. Evan's got that touch of a GOP whiner in him. He'll soon learn that blue dogs are ancient history. Republicans put us in debt, not democrats. That's something Evan will have to face front and center when the 111'th congress convenes.

Evan Bayh is Hillary Clinton in a man's suit. They aren't Blue Dogs, they're Corporate Whores. At least we know who's grabbing the DLC reins in The Senate.

There's a reason Ev got a bigger % of votes in Indiana then George W did in '04 - Ev is a Republican that can get Dem votes because they liked his Daddy.

Absolutely LiarLiar,... they are what is wrong with the Democrat party,... the DLCers might as well just fess up and admit they wish they were Republicans.

Is it necessary to continue bashing Hillary Clinton? She lost the primary, she will soon be the Secretary of State. It's time to get over it and embrace our new administration. Don't get me wrong, this is not to say that we shouldn't keep an eye on the administration, all I'm saying is quit bashing Clinton and give the PE the support he is going to need (from ALL of us) to get his policies put in place.

Obama is thinking wrong thoughts and making wrong choices. Bashing is required of every one in politics - irregardless of need. It is what keeps them thinking the right way.

Instead of "Blue Dogs", they should call themselves "Lap Dogs", because that is their relationship with Republicans. A bunch of Marshmallowesque Milquetoast Middlemen.

Anarchy is the only answer!

The two are by no means the most liberal Democrats in Congress. There are a total of 286 Democrats in the 110th House and Senate (counting replacements). There are 88 members to Obama's left -- 8 Senators and 80 Representatives. The 8 Senators are Feingold (D-WI), Whitehouse (D-RI), Sanders (I-VT), Boxer (D-CA), Kennedy (D-MA), Brown (D-OH), Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Levin (D-MI). Between Obama and Clinton are 8 members -- one Senator, Akaka (D-HI) -- and 7 Represenatives.

To Clinton's right there are 188 Democrats -- 40 Senators and 148 Representatives.
Combining the two Chambers shows even more clearly the fact that Senators Clinton and Obama are essentially identical ideologically with a substantial number of Democrats to their left. Senator McCain is in the left wing of the Republican Party and President Bush is on the conservative edge of his Party.
