ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin's home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize if the fire was connected to "undeserved negative attention" from her failed campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.

He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson but didn't know of any recent threats to the church. Authorities didn't know whether Palin's connection to the church was relevant to the fire, Steele said.

"It's hard to say at this point. Everything is just speculation," he said. "We have no information on intent or motive."

Steele would not comment on the means used to set the fire.

Pastor Larry Kroon declined to say whether the church had received any recent threats.

"There are so many variables," he said. "I don't want to comment in that direction."

Palin, who was not at the church at the time of the fire, stopped by Saturday. Her spokesman, Bill McAllister, said in a statement that Palin told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the "undeserved negative attention" the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29.

"Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good," McAllister said.

The 1,000-member evangelical church was the subject of intense scrutiny after Palin was named John McCain's running mate. Early in Palin's campaign, the church was criticized for promoting in a Sunday bulletin a Focus on the Family "Love Won Out Conference" in Anchorage. The conference promised to "help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome."

The fire was set at the entrance of the church and moved inward as a small group of women were working on crafts, Steele said. The group was alerted to the blaze by a fire alarm.

Outside temperatures were minus 20 as firefighters battled the blaze.

Steele said a multi-agency task force was being assembled to investigate the fire.

Wasilla, the governor's hometown, is 40 miles north of Anchorage.

LOL! Is that how much it costs to build what looks (looked) like a really big shipping container?

In fairness though, it is Alaska. In addition to the standard insurance-related-valuation-inflation, I bet the cost of just about everything is astronomical up there, just because of shipping. I wonder how much they pay for a sheet of drywall or a can of paint?

Ok, Wasilla isn't a big place and I can't imagine that there are many visitors since all of the hubbub has died down.

This crime should not be all that hard to solve. I doubt very seriously that some crazy liberal elitist, from the lower 48, jumped into their eco-friendly foreign car that runs on hope and arugula just to head to Alaska and burn down that church.

Sarah needs to get her crack team of law enforcement officials down there to solve this Alaskan crime of the century. I'm sure they can just follow the foot prints in the snow back to the culprits house.

I know ... I know ... I'm a jack@ss

If the Wasilla Fire and Police attendants had been used to large buildings catching fire they would have said, "We are just starting this investigation. We can not yet rule out arson." That does not mean that they have specific reason to suspect arson. I have been following this story on a number of sites and I cannot find any reference to any specific evidence. Therefore it is counterproductive to jump to conclusions, especially when it generates so many horrible comments on the this thread and, especially, the thread on the Anchorage Daily News site. Certainly it would be very horrible if someone torched the building while there were still people inside. But why would anyone be dumb enough to commit such a heavy crime when there were possible witnesses wandering about?

Exactly. One of those poor women, the five who were working on craft projects in the church at the time the fire started, could be the unwitting -- probably accidental -- "perp". Any number of craft projects involve hot glue guns, soldering irons, ironing boards and clothing-type irons, hot wax in a water bath over a hot plate, even a blow torch...and accidents do happen.

It's only suspicious because someone put 2 + 2 together and came up with Sarah Palin, which is probably not within 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.

If they said it was arson, then it was. Most of the time it's easy to tell, and they certainly wouldn't call it arson this early unless they were sure.

Or Todd Palin was standing too close to Christmas tree lights and the grease in his hair caught ablaze.

This is sad. Especially in a week where we had Bill Ayers come out of the closets and tell us that burning down "empty buildings" was not "completely insane." Sounded to me like the same thing the Klan thought about black churches in the south.

I will go out on a limb - It is COMPLETELY INSANE TO BURN DOWN BUILDINGS. It does not matter what your political beliefs are. THat is true NOW and was true during the Vietnam war. This is a disgraceful thing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:37 PM on 12/14/2008

The Klan didn't warn people away before they burned buildings; they burned children inside the churches they set afire.

I agree; burning down building during the vietnam war was insane and disgraceful. The soldiers who burned hundreds of thousands of vietnamese civilians out of their homes got away scot-free. Shameful!

How do you know that someone burned it down for political reasons? Maybe it was some kids or someone who had a beef with the church leaders. You don't know who or why so I don't get the connection with Bill Ayers.

Sure, burning her church would be "undeserved negative attention." Clearly that's wrong. But negative attention in general is not undeserved. Every reasonable person knows she was essentially inspiring a lynching. Christ, I'm sure she inspired more than a few people to seriously consider an Obama assassination. Having someone killed, and in this case, a far more deserving person killed just so you can be in the presidential limelight is far worse than burning a building.

and to be a victim , instead of a victimizer responsible for the shooting and other racist acts against blacks, who "are not like us"?

My suspicon exactly!

That's EXACTLY what this is. The dead giveaways:

1. The typical McCain/Palin/Hannity/O'Reilly desperation
2. Her immediate spinning the fire against the leftie media
3. Fascists burn things

No, this week she wants to be Sarah the Martyr. Or Sarah The One Wronged. Or Sarah of Arc.

Last week she was Sarah the Dissembler, trying to convince everybody in Alaska that the 2010 budget she's been "working on" (taking credit for the months of work others have been doing while she's been flying all around the country) will have sufficient funds.

The week before that she tried to convince everybody she met with Obama, when the only heads-up she got at the Obama-governors' meeting was a shout-out from Biden to the back of the room where she was sitting (lol).

Someone took that "good book" literally....

"The phrase "an eye for an eye", (Hebrew: עין תחת עין‎ ayin takhat ayin) is a quotation from Exodus 21:23–27 in which a person who has taken the eye of another in a fight is instructed to give his own eye in compensation. At the root of the non-Biblical form of this principle is that one of the purposes of the law is to provide equitable retaliation for an offended party. It defined and restricted the extent of retaliation. This early belief is reflected in the Code of Hammurabi and in the laws of the Hebrew Bible (e.g., Ex 21:23–25, Lv 24:18–20, Dt 19:21)."

The purpose of "an eye for an eye" was not to provide equitable retaliation, in spite of the expert opinion of weak-opedia.

The purpose was to give a person pause and time to think about the actions they are contemplating and the consequences thereof.

No matter how much I despise Palin's views and her agenda, some of which would deny me my rights, I would not wish destruction upon her or those she associates with. I would wish for their enlightenment though in a big way.

During the presidential campaign, her spokeswoman Tracy Schmitt said that Palin attends several churches but she is not a member or as Palin would put it, she doesn't belong to any church. So this is not Palin's home church. In other words, her name may not be connected to the incident.

Sarah Palin quote: "I don’t belong to any church".

Having said that, burning churches this way (or any other building for that matter) is definitely not 'cool'.
