ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin's home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize if the fire was connected to "undeserved negative attention" from her failed campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.

He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson but didn't know of any recent threats to the church. Authorities didn't know whether Palin's connection to the church was relevant to the fire, Steele said.

"It's hard to say at this point. Everything is just speculation," he said. "We have no information on intent or motive."

Steele would not comment on the means used to set the fire.

Pastor Larry Kroon declined to say whether the church had received any recent threats.

"There are so many variables," he said. "I don't want to comment in that direction."

Palin, who was not at the church at the time of the fire, stopped by Saturday. Her spokesman, Bill McAllister, said in a statement that Palin told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the "undeserved negative attention" the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29.

"Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good," McAllister said.

The 1,000-member evangelical church was the subject of intense scrutiny after Palin was named John McCain's running mate. Early in Palin's campaign, the church was criticized for promoting in a Sunday bulletin a Focus on the Family "Love Won Out Conference" in Anchorage. The conference promised to "help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome."

The fire was set at the entrance of the church and moved inward as a small group of women were working on crafts, Steele said. The group was alerted to the blaze by a fire alarm.

Outside temperatures were minus 20 as firefighters battled the blaze.

Steele said a multi-agency task force was being assembled to investigate the fire.

Wasilla, the governor's hometown, is 40 miles north of Anchorage.

Let's hope they catch the arsonists. There is no excuse for setting a church on fire.

No excuse to set ANY building afire by arson! Beyond that, this is LOCAL Wasilla news and that's that.

I can't personally see why anyone would burn a church, regardless of its practice. What does burning a church prove? You can use a lighter and gas? What an idiot, whomever you are...Truly sad. I really don't care for Palin, but this act is deplorable.

OK. I'm totally lost. What conclusion would I be jumping to? The article is about an act of arson at a church.

Not surprising, many posters here are "ok" with this church burning. "no one was hurt, why is this national news?" "Her press has been falling off a bit lately..." "*This* attacked is more surgical than the random helicopter attacks that regularly massacre WEDDING PARTIES in Afghanistan.................". There are some sick people in this world.

Well..Rolling...were you doing just that when you read these comments. NOBODY thinks this is a fair game act. Everyone was glad nobody was hurt. It was a hate crime and burning churches has gone on forever...look at all the ones burned in the south last year...they were Af-Am churches. So we can't abide Palin and anybody with an IQ over 70 should have seen through her vitolic rhetoric, inciting hate,btw.. Somebody burned her very fundy church...it can be rebuilt after all. There are many reasons not to like this sect of religion...but it does not mean burning the church helps in any way. So what is your beef? That people didn't for good reasons like Palin or that the church was burned?

Don't forget the AA church that was burned right after the election.

What are the " many reasons to dislike this sect of religion?" Supposedly, this church is non-denominationa..

well, of course this has everything to do with SP - the Sun revolves around her. no reason to believe this has any connection to anything. fires at unexpected times/places are typically investigated as arson. still, sorry to know this church had a fire; no one deserves to have their sanctuary burned.

How predictable that Palin would imply it might be the work of people who don't like her poilitics. Typical right wing fundie - always trying to rile up the yeehaw base with tales and innuendo of Christian "persecution". The fact is this is far more likely to be the work of a disgruntled fellow church member than any wicked liberal with politics in mind.

Before anyone jumps to a political conclusion, maybe there is NONE. Churches can burn like any other manmade structure and, if anyone did burn it, it might be for reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with Palin.

Quite frankly, she is not a martyr and I doubt anyone anywhere in the lower 48 who had an axe to grind with her during her losing campaign, even thinks she is relevant.

In fact, posts here to HuffingtonPost seem to indicate people are tired of seeing her name in the news.

Alaska law officials will just as likely be looking to their local Wasilla meth-lab connections and other transients that seem to inhabit that corner of the world.

Tell that to Palin, will ya? She's the one jumping and shooting from the hip. Polarizing as always. No decency to wait for the facts.

Agreed BHT...didn't it say the women were working on "crafts"...until they prove intentional arson then people are speculating. I know Palin would like to have her Joan-of-Arc moment for the world to see, but it is entirely possible that this had absolutely nothing to do with her.

I am not fond of Sarah Palin, but I don't condone acts of destruction of other people or other people's property... It never brings reconciliation or peaceful resolutions.

It's sad that she succeeds in making people believe this was done against her.
This is WRONG no matter WHO, and no matter WHY they did it.
As the leader of the state, she should abstain from accusations until the facts are known. The pastor and the Fire Dept chief had more sense than her.

Your kidding right? You need to get out more! A bulding alone could be worth that not taking into account for equipment, furniture and supplies inside.

Your lack of insensitivity is incredible!

I'm sorry to say that intolerance just breeds more intolerance in response.
Look in the mirror and make the changes there first.

As much as I can't stand Sarah Palin, I cringed when I first heard this story. This act is not appropriate or laudable in any way. I hope whoever did this is caught and prosecuted, because this is nothing short of a crime.

What's also sad is how quickly right-wingers on blogs everywhere are already blaming 'liberals', leftists and even the Democratic party for a church that burned in Alaska. I must have missed the memo from David Axelrod and Howard Dean advising us to go out and burn churches down.

In no way would I ever try to justify such a heinous and cowardly act but it remains true, nonetheless, and a well known fact that witches do NOT liked to be dissed. They really take it to heart. I'm not trying to excuse their actions but this has to kept in mind. They're incorrigible.

The Republicans will probably try to link this to Obama somehow. Here is the new RNC ad linking Obama to Blagojevich. Check out the background music. Reminds me of the junk from "Hannity's America". Probably the same producer. But again, maybe they can just blame the Clintons.
