After nearly four weeks of fundraising, President-elect Obama's inauguration committee has raised almost $10 million, in part through donations from Hollywood stars like Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson.

In an unprecedented move this week, the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) unveiled an online searchable database of donors who have given more than $200. Jackson and Stone each gave $50,000, the maximum amount for individuals and the most common donation amount.

Totally. Remember when the media was advising Bush he should have a toned-down inauguaration out of respect for the war going on? Something tells me that there won't be too many calls this time because of the economy. After all, this time it's the media's darling.

All the people that are complaining and acting like they know whats going to happened, how much its going cost; the truth of the matter are you dont know sh*t because what is about to happen has never happen before so get ready to witness history. and stop complaining. Mr Obama will restore this country as the leader of the free world and all without the help of those sorry ass republicians. The people in Iraq are throwing their shoes at great decider, what a joke.

I know the big-name movie stars are grabbing all the attention (as usual), but this is the news that really grabs me: "In an unprecedented move this week, the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) unveiled an online searchable database of donors who have given more than $200." -- Unprecedented, as in for the first time we know who's funding the inauguration. That's real news.

Why is everyone attacking these two? We should be applauding them. I love Sharon Stone. I had a sister that (passed away) looked exactly like her. I guess they had alot in common. Both Pennsylvanians and both caring people that wanted to make a difference.

So, how is raising money for Obama's Inaguration going to change things? These same people complain that the government doesn't do enough for the people yet they are spending millions to basically have a big party. How many invitations do you think they will be sending to the homeless?

Where was your voice when the republicans were stealing and sinking the country?

Bush raised $43.5M for his inguaration, did you complain about that and consider the homeless? Were they sent invitations to Bush's parties?

I think not!!

Let's keep some perspective here. $10M is the amount the CEO of Morgan Stanley is arguing he deserves, even though his company is getting a bailout. To me, that's shameful and at least the inauguration money is going right back into the economy. When the president tells us we need to keep shopping to fight terror or spend our tax rebates on gas, that's shameful (and it actually happened). When CEOs walk away with $100M bonuses after sinking their companies, that's shameful (still happening and will continue even for those receiving bailout money thanks to a new Bush loophole).

The inauguration will cost $50 million, not 10.

Personally, i don't really care how much Obama spends for this, but if a Republican were spending $50 million with a recession and two wars on, the shrieking would be so high pitched only dogs could hear it.

Let's lay the "Blame " where it belongs, on the present "Regime". and no one else. Its time for the""Loud" mouth "Republicans to own up to there actions, and their crimes. And yes there are a few spineless Democrats to throw in that circle of "Snakes".

What is shameful is that $8 billion went missing and you said nothing.

If these people want to give their money away, it's none of your business.

Oh, I almost forgot that philanthropy is anti-capitalism - un American.

Did you complain when all the deregulations were being proposed which cause a lot of these problems?

There is always a root to problems -- the job lost didn't just happen over night. It took a lot of events for a long period of time for this to happen.

It's just reality.

not to bring up old stuff as a knock against Samuel L., but if i remember correctly, he voted for gwb once (or twice?). if that's true i'm glad that he supported obama this year. shows the broad appeal that our new president has :-).

He voted for him because he was a brother, and a good liberal one at that.

Reality Check! In an economy in a death spiral and contemporary news accounts replete with dispatches describing a corresponding diminution of charitable giving and contributions to the full spectrum of educational institutions and programs on which society has come to rely, raising megabucks for a one day celebration of even this significant event seems inappropriate. The lavish cocktail parties paid for in large measure by special interest groups whose principal motivation is to get to persons at the center of power is not an image one can point to with pride.

Four million people descending upon D.C. is an expensive and egregious assault on the transportation system and utilities degrading the environment in an age when IT could interactively broaden the event to the nation and the world without such negative consequences while expanding participatory opportunities to the future president's constituency. Change should have begun at inauguration, but it is too late now.

consider it a stimulus package.....do you realize how many people are going to get paid to work during the inauguration.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:14 AM on 12/15/2008

and your suggestion is?

you're looking at the downside perhaps and not on the upside. imagine the businesses in dc who'd benefit from the festivities, the number of people they're employing (thousands temporarily). our friends in dc who have businesses are now hiring people to support them, and it's only december. these are people who were laid off from their permanent jobs and have nowhere to get their support for the holidays.

this particular inauguration is what our country needs. it's historic.

"We the People" need this positive enviornment to begin a new era in the government!

Get real, all the lavish went on during the Bush years -- yet we heard no out cries -- not even now! He is a "lame duck" shouldn't he be rightly blame for this mess? Oh, you can see how this happen. Don't be a sour grape.

Many people will work during this time so the economy in D.C. will increase. Isn't that good?!
