Obama: Judge Me On The Jobs I Create

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama

Much of the focus of the just completed Obama press conference is going to center on his answer to the obligatory Rod Blagojevich question -- the president-elect repeated that his staff had no inappropriate contacts with the embattled governor and that they would be releasing their internal findings on the matter next week.

But tucked in the proceedings was some serious discussion on energy and economic matters. Obama declined to speculate when he thought the struggling economy would turn around, saying, simply: "I don't have a crystal ball." But he did offer something in the way of a measure for performance judgment.

"The yardstick should be," he said, "am I creating these jobs and are we strengthening the economy."

Of specific note, the president-elect repeated something that his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said on Sunday: that the economic stimulus that will leave his desk early upon taking office will focus largely on "shovel-ready projects," as in, programs that are ready to create jobs immediately. Moreover, it appears Obama will use state governments as a conduit for the cash:

"Governors and mayors are pleading to fund [these programs]," he said. "And the minute we can get those investments to the state level, jobs are going to be created."

Certainly, there are some outstanding questions yet to be nailed down in regards to the stimulus legislation: with many state governments facing massive shortfalls in budget revenue, what kind of provisions the Obama team write into the bill in order to ensure that the money is spent on its intended project? Who is going to determine which programs or municipalities get the cash (the office of intergovernmental affairs and public liaison)? How much oversight will there be? And so on.

Obama has mostly offered broad answers to these questions. On Monday, he insisted that his administration will invest in science and the environment: noting that being environmentally conscious and economically shrewd were not mutually exclusive. He also offered that -- while the stimulus package is ultimately destined to spur short-term growth -- he would not take his eye off of long-term objectives.

"We're going to create jobs that wouldn't otherwise be created," he said. "We know we'll put ourselves on the path to long-term sustainable growth. We know that we're going to start getting serious about how our federal budget operates so we're not wasting money on programs that don't work and we'll do an exhaustive review."

How about the 300 billion in uncollected taxes on the rich...I would love to see the studies of where the tax breaks are going, such as mortgage and property taxes... and not just the amount of the income offset, but the net tax effect...

And healthcare, how to shrink that to make us more competitive, it is really a 10% surtax on everything we do because of the excessive cost...That will always make us less competitive with the foreign based automakers in the US...

About the Pensions for the UAW and the management, we all wish that we had been able to hold onto our pensions instead of being stuck with the supremenely stupid 401Ks....AND these people who are receiving them including managements million dollar a year pensions are convinced that they earned them... And that is why I am for 91% tax rate on all income over 1 million dollars including dividends and capital gains, it was good enough in the 20s to pay off the war debt and by gum it should be good enough now to pay off the war debt and get us out of this depression. (Wait until January and you will see what I mean, retail has to cut jobs then)

AH! All these insightful comments from insightful people. All coming from
a purely intellectual point of view with no biases. Oh Obama, he is the greatest.
I love Obama. Oh yes, me love Obama. He is so cool he could never be wrong.
He went to Colombia university you know. And then to Harvard for his JD in Law.
Gee, he surrounds himself with brilliant people and is so smart. And he is so squeaky clean.
He is the one. He is truly the change I can believe in. Oh, how art thou Obama.

So far, you're on the right track. Can't help it, the guy is good.
08:55 AM on 12/16/2008
I realize, being that you're from Texas, it's hard for you to imagine a politician with intellect and a good nature.

If you liked the previous era of Rush Limbaugh, banker tyranny, wealthy pedophiles with big-hats and war crime, I suggest you go to Saudi Arabia or Yemen where the culture is more your style.

Obama: Judge Me On The Jobs I Create

=====

If Obama can create jobs to stop this plunge into national bankruptcy, that will be great.

But I must say this. He will be judged very severely if he refuses to prosecute the Bush administration for their crimes and if he does not get us out of this illegal war-mongering stance we're in, return us to a Constitutional government. There's no need to even investigate the most egregious crimes, since the Bush administration has admitted them publicly.

We will, of course, cheer wildly if he IS able to initiated an economic recovery program for America, though that will be a long haul since the problems are world-wide.

But he MUST DO ALL OF THESE THINGS, and there's no reason the new administration cannot multi-task to restore America to its greatness. Like it or not, Obama will be judged on the basis of what's urgently needed, and that's more than job-creation.

He will get us out of this war, I truly believe that. But prosecuting the Bush administration? Not gonna happen.
09:56 AM on 12/16/2008
At least not right away. Because if Obama went into full court press of going after Bush, the minute he takes office, then it will be all the more difficult for Obama to get the cooperation of some Republicans to pass his stimulus bill and many other important bills like with Health Care. The Republicans, being the lemmings they are, would all close rank immediately if Obama went after Bush, right out of the gate, and start crying "partisan politics" and we will all suffer for it.

I believe that in time Obama will have his AJ prosecute the Bush Crime Family. But first he needs to solve a couple of very severe problems.
08:16 AM on 12/16/2008
prosecute bush administration, that's a joke right.........never happened before never will happen

Excellent point, judge the President based upon results. Not promises, plans, speeches or excuses. But solid factual results. I really hope Obama delivers, but the track record of politicians is very poor.
12:30 AM on 12/16/2008
I think if anyone can do it in these bad economic times its Obama. You know why because he is focus like a lazer. If you go back to the campaign when his opponents campaign were coming apart from the inside he kept on doing what he wanted to do. When the attacks from his opponents came he kept on doing what he wanted to do. Thats why during the campaign he looked like he was the only one who would be ready on day one. Its because he was further ahead. He was always one step ahead of them. When he faltered with Wright he was able to recover because was ahead. When they caught up he had weathered it.

Even now the republicans and the media is going on and on about Oh he needs to handle this Blago issue he doesnt want a dark cloud hanging over his presidency and they speculate and criticize. Meanwhile what is Obama doing he is continuing to roll out his cabinet still one step ahead. Thats why he is ALWAYS ahead of the curve. He doesnt let distractions hinder him from his goal.

Take the new polls76% even after Blago still approve of what he is doing. For all this talk about Oh this is a distraction its not distracting him its distracting the republicans from paying attention to what he is doing. By the time they start paying attention he's already moved on. They still haven not figured it out.
05:55 AM on 12/16/2008
Great post!
09:11 AM on 12/16/2008
I agree with you but I am sure republicans and the media will continue to create drama with fake news about PE Obama.
09:56 AM on 12/16/2008
So you will judge Obama by the sins of past politicians. Why is that?

You could create plenty of jobs by raking up deficits (that doesn't mean it's a good thing).

So you prefer almost doubling the deficit and losing jobs based on population growth like the Bush administration did.

12:29 AM on 12/16/2008
Tro//s, as well as the boosh administration, tend to forget about borrowing to run an illegal war. What's half a trillion deficit between friends?
09:58 AM on 12/16/2008
If Obama doubles the deficit to get this country and the economy moving again, so what. Bush squandered a surplus and created the largest deficit ever and what did we get in return besides a looming depression and a lot of dead Americans.
09:17 AM on 12/16/2008
How about the billions we are spending killing our soldiers? If we have to have a deficit it should create job in our country not on useless wars.

He's right to emphasize jobs. Hes right to fund projects that are locally popular. And Obama says "we're going to start getting serious about how our federal budget operates so we're not wasting money on programs that don't work". This means the war on drugs is over.
09:29 AM on 12/16/2008
If Obama adds that to his plate he's a saint. As much as I think the war on drugs is a bunch of crap and has never and will never work, it's highly unlikely that war will end. But maybe I'll be proven wrong. Hope so.

You had me going until that last sentence. WTF?
11:21 PM on 12/15/2008
Yeah, temporary public works jobs that will be paid for by incurring massive indebtedness to the Chinese, at least so long as the Chinese are willing to keep lending to us. So what happens when all these public works projects are completed and all these workers suddenly become unemployed? I guess that will be the next president's problem, as will figuring out how to pay back the Chinese.

LOL you had no problem borrowing money from China for an illegal war and creating negative employment based on population growth. You tro//s are so funny.

You mean we actually elected someone with brains to run this country? Bush, Rush, Cheney. Rove, Hannity, rethugs, will not be happy!
10:03 PM on 12/15/2008
Obama will be taking the train to Washington for his inauguration, and they will be picking up the Biden’s along the way. This is great news for Amtrak! And, this is just what Amtrak needs, two hopefully really great leaders, supporting an alternative transportation system that this country needs so badly. Please, Please, Please, I hope they will see the funding needs that Amtrak simply must have – although they really need to be riding the trains across America to really get a true picture of the condition our trains are in. By providing appropriate funding, Amtrak alone could create so many more jobs in every state, city, and even small towns, in so many different ways that support train travel; auto workers could be doing some of the work that goes into building new train cars, etc. We need more tracks, more trains, better food service. We need clean-up crews, clearing away trash and garbage along the tracks all across America. The list of potential jobs can go on and on. There is no better experience in travel that this, but it’s falling apart and needs help.

I sure agree with this about mass transportation. Which of us would not give up spending 5 grand a year if we could pop on a train instead?...Which of us would not rather be taking a nap on the train instead of giving the finger to the jerk who cut in front of us?...

Oh that would not be good for the oil companies or the automakers would it....
08:20 AM on 12/16/2008
i like my car..........you ride the train i'll drive.........at least until mass transit runs most of the time everyday.......and i never wait more than 15 min.....then maybe depending on the crowd

yes net job loss, initially Bush killed alot of the Clinton era high paying jobs, which were then replaced by lower paying jobs in a proped up economy, of lies and deceipt.
Every job create immediatley befreo Bush and of course durign the last 7 years was lost this year if i have my figures right.
Immediate recession when he got in, the a jobless recovery, gues if the numbers are fudged, we recovered, but to track how, one could say we had more money on paper..
though we find that the last 10 yrs of paper, were all lies, and non regulated or checked and balanced.

'pabo8', I realize it's of little conciliation, but stay strong.

Like DASChicago said change is coming....it may not be soon but it is coming. Obama will do what he can with the money that he will have left - if any.

Hang on and don't give up - think also about the fact that you may have to relocate to another city or state.
