CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama said Monday a review by his own lawyer shows he had no direct contact with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich about the appointment of a Senate replacement, and transition aides did nothing inappropriate.

Obama pledged to make the review public, but said he decided to hold off because prosecutors asked for a delay and "I don't want to interfere with an ongoing investigation." U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald released a statement confirming the request.

Controversy has swirled around the president-elect and his incoming White House chief of staff, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, following Blagojevich's arrest last week on charges he schemed to trade Obama's Senate seat for personal gain.

Obama, fielding questions at a news conference, sidestepped when asked whether Emanuel had spoken with aides to the governor about potential Senate appointees.

Emanuel was one of several aides who watched the news conference from the wings.

The president-elect pledged the results of the investigation by his incoming White House counsel, Gregory Craig, would be released "in due course."

He said the probe was complete and thorough, but did not say which of his aides Craig interviewed, whether any of them was under oath at the time, or any other details.

Obama appeared before reporters to announce his environmental and natural resources team.

Story continues below

It was disclosed last week that he selected Steven Chu for energy secretary, Lisa Jackson for Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Carol Browner as his energy and climate "czar," and Nancy Sutley to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Separately, officials familiar with the selection of Obama's Cabinet said the president-elect has chosen Chicago schools chief Arne Duncan as education secretary, and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar as interior secretary. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose any personnel decisions not yet announced.

In personally disclosing the results of the investigation he ordered, Obama said, "As I said in a press conference last week, I had no contact with the governor's office and I had no contact with anybody in the governor's office. What I indicated last week was there was nothing that my office did that was in any way inappropriate or related to the charges that have been brought."

Blagojevich has authority under Illinois state law to name a Senate replacement for Obama, who resigned his seat as he prepares to become president. Senate Democrats have warned the governor not to use his power, hinting they may refuse to allow his selection to take the oath of office.

There also has been talk of the legislature passing a law that would strip the governor of the power to name a replacement, and call for a special election instead.

Separately, Blagojevich has come under heavy pressure to resign, from Obama as well as Democrats nationally and in Illinois. Earlier in the day, the Legislature took the first step toward possible impeachment.

Obama held his news conference shortly after his transition office released a statement by spokesman Dan Pfeiffer saying the internal review had found no wrongdoing.

Like the president-elect, the statement left several issues uncovered.

It did not say whether Emanuel was heard on a wiretap providing the governor's top aide with a list of names that the president-elect favored. Nor did it say who, if anyone, on Obama transition's team had made contact with the governor or his aides concerning a replacement for Obama or whether Craig interviewed people under oath, or to whom he talked.

Pfeiffer said the review "affirmed the public statements of the president-elect that he had no contact with the governor or his staff, and that the president-elect's staff was not involved in inappropriate discussions with the governor or his staff over the selection of his successor as U.S. Senator."

Earlier in the day, Obama met privately with his national security team, including Vice President-elect Joe Biden, incoming Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The president-elect's transition office said the meeting was held to discuss opportunities and challenges around the globe and was designed to help the new administration hit the ground running as of Inauguration Day, Jan. 20.

In recent days, Obama's staff has declined to respond even to basic questions about the Blagojevich review, like how long it would take, who was leading it and what issues were explored.

Two people who have been briefed on the investigation had told The Associated Press that Emanuel is not a target of the probe. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the criminal investigation is ongoing. One is a person close to Emanuel, who said he has been told by investigators that he's not a subject of their probe.

There are no suggestions that Obama or his aides were involved in the alleged sale of his seat. Fitzgerald has said prosecutors were making no allegations that Obama was aware of any scheming. And Blagojevich himself, in taped conversations cited by prosecutors, suggested Obama wouldn't be helpful to him and called him a vulgar term. Even if the governor were to appoint a candidate favored by the Obama team, Blagojevich said, "they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation."

Very early in Watergate, Nixon's staff did an internal review of the situation and determined that there were no inappropriate activities.

Why anyone still listens to Fox news is beyond me. Regardless people are going to find out in the end that Emanuel was the one who told on the govenor and that will be the end of the story. Unless there are more people going down that the Obama team snitched on and thats why it is being kept quiet for awhile longer. Then the republican talking heads are going to be made out like stupid childish idiots that they are......AGAIN.

Fox news does not like reporting the facts they prefer to embelish a story often twist it like a pretzel and them pretend it is news. Joe does this on morning Joe and believes everyone is a dummie whom he is speaking to. Joe often gently reshapes a story and continues hyping his garbage hoping his viewers will believe that his thoughts are the facts when in fact they are his opinions.

Others at fox are nit wits and obvious fools that hammers there views as news. No one rational believes these idiots have any other agenda then sprewing there twisted stupidity and there personal hatred for Dems.

Mika is often behaves as a puppet for Joe and trys very hard to please him at all times. Although she is trying to have her own opinions at times she is still gun shy about Joe running her over and she must support 2 of her brothers who worked for Mc Cain Palin.

Yes these shows are bad do little to massage anyones brain other then liten to none facts and twisted opinions they are drowning us with.

They listen to it because it's easier than thinking. The talking head du jour tells them what to think about the "news" story that they just twisted into a lie.

Of course the Obama camp gave Blago a list of those the favored. It would be incompetent not to. And what ever one may think of Team Obama, they are NOT incompetent.

What did any of you clowns [like "TheManchurianKenyan" for example] think actually happens with a major political transition like this? The outgoing guy just says, "Oh, I don't care. Pick whomever you think best." Geeze....F'ing Bush voters. =P

I don't believe clowns like TheManchurianKenyan THINK! They simply let Sean and Rush and FOX do their thinking for them, which is indicative by their posts. When they don't know the talking points, they just post gobbledy-dook!

Yet the brief statement left several issues uncovered.
-from AP article

This article by AP is a fine example of misleading representation! The statement left issues uncovered specifically because they were asked to by the federal prosecutor! The statement makes that clear. How frustrating to read such misleading drivel.

Just watched a talking head say why didn't he come out right away and say he had nothing to do with it. Well, if he came out right away then certain people would be saying he's lying and there should be an investigation. He had the investigation and now they're crying that it took too long. It's an absolute no win situation.

He did come out right away and say he didn't have any contact with the Governor or his office and that none of his staff had anything to do with the pay for play scheme. He then said he would come back with a a full report on any conversations that did take place between his staff and the Governor's office which is what he was going to divulge today until he was asked not to until next week. He again reiterated what he stated over a week ago.

I just watched FOX for 2 minutes.

They're already walking their wild accusations back.

They blame Emanuel. For making them suspicious. He has a reputation as a tough guy, and he has a foul mouth.

OF COURSE FOX jumped right to convicting him! It's his fault!

No matter how thoroughly Obama answers the questions put to him ...

No matter how often he repeats the same answers ...

No matter how aware the media and the public are that this is an ongoing investigation and that there are some things that cannot be disclosed at this time ...

No matter how obvious it is that there is NO EVIDENCE linking Obama or his camp to Blagojevich's crime - of which they are the obvious victims ...

The talking heads on the MSM, the RNC and the trolls will continue to insist that Obama is "hiding something." That he's not answering the questions, that he's not telling them what they want to hear (which translates as telling them that he or someone in his camp are guilty) and that he's broken his promise of transparency. This is what they want to believe, what they want others to believe and truth and facts simply don't matter. In other words, nothings changed since the campaign!

I believe him and it's enough for me, but it's not going to be enough for the media and it's not going to be enough for many among the 47% of Americans who did not vote for Obama. Eventually, the Transition is going to have to make the details available, so they should just get it over with and do it sooner rather than later. The longer they take, the more some will assume he's hiding something.

Did you actually listen to PE Obama or read the article?

The transition team WILL provide the details of their internal review NEXT WEEK, in accordance with the government's request not to disclose that information during an ongoing an active investigation!

Your post seems to suggest that Obama and his team are deliberately and willfully withholding information, which is clearly contradicted by both his statement and the article itself. But apparently, you don't believe this. So what exactly is it that you DO believe when you say, "I believe him and it's enough for me, but ..."

The spokesman, Dan Pfeiffer, said the review itself would be kept confidential at least until the week of Dec. 22 at the request of federal prosecutors "in order not to impede their investigation of the governor."

If federal prosecutors have asked him to not release it until Dec 22 then he is doing the right thing by not releasing it.

Since the November presidential election, the Republican National Committee has been entombed in a bit of psychological stasis. First, everyone there had to take a vacation, which slowed down the metabolism. Then, RNC chairman Mike Duncan decided to run for re-election, which complicates what the party can and cannot do, lest Duncan look like he's using the levers of power to help his campaign.

Most importantly, though: Republicans really had no idea whether the timeworn techniques that so quickly, in past years, would win them an audience with the media, well, whether they worked anymore, or whether the country's election of Barack Obama turned the traditional political games played by both party committes into relics of a past age. The stasis is reflect on the RNC's website, which still contains a campaign-era ACORN Tree" game designed to mock Obama's community organizing past and put the screws to ACORN. Aside from a statement or two, the RNC's done nothing to assert its place in this new universe. Until this weekend, that is, when they released a new web video with the vague title "Questions Remain" about Obama's ties to the Blagojevich scandal.

As with most web videos produced by party committees, the narrative is a tad intellectually dishonest: Obama endorsed Blagojevich in 2002 = --> Obama's knee deep in the current scandal.

See the problem is in any investigation there are always lingering questions. Why? Because not even everyone involved knows everything that happened and no on knows others intentions. There are still facts coming out about Nixon for goodness sake. But the media uses these lingering questions like a 3 year old child that always says why to response a parent gives to explain the world around them which can never be answered.
