This undated file photo shows six year-old Adam Walsh of Hollywood, Fla who was murdered in 1981. Authorities in South Florida say they've finally solved the 1981 killing of the boy whose father, John Walsh, later gained fame as the host of television's "America's Most Wanted." Hollywood police said Tuesday Dec. 16, 2008 that a man long considered the lead suspect in Adam's murder has finally been conclusively linked to the crime. The accused, a serial killer named Ottis Toole, died in prison more than a decade ago. (AP Photo)

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A serial killer who died more than a decade ago is the person who decapitated the 6-year-old son of "America's Most Wanted" host John Walsh in 1981, police in Florida said Tuesday.

The announcement closed a case that stoked the Walsh family's grief and anger, launched the television show about the nation's most notorious criminals and inspired changes in how authorities search for missing children.

"Who could take a 6-year-old and murder and decapitate him? Who?" an emotional John Walsh said at Tuesday's news conference. "We needed to know. We needed to know. And today we know. The not knowing has been a torture, but that journey's over."

Walsh's wife, Reve, at one point placed a small photo of their son on the podium.

Police named Ottis Toole, saying he was long the prime suspect in the case and that they had conclusively linked him to the killing. They declined to be specific about their evidence and did not note any DNA proof of the crime, but said an extensive review of the case file pointed only to Toole, as John Walsh long contended.

"Our agency has devoted an inordinate amount of time seeking leads to other potential perpetrators rather than emphasizing Ottis Toole as our primary suspect," said Hollywood Police Chief Chadwick Wagner, who launched a fresh review of the case after taking over the department last year. "Ottis Toole has continued to be our only real suspect."

Toole had twice confessed to killing the child, but later recanted. He claimed responsibility for hundreds of murders, but police determined most of the confessions were lies. Toole's niece told the boy's father, John Walsh, her uncle confessed on his deathbed in prison that he killed Adam.

Wagner acknowledged numerous missteps in the investigation and apologized to the Walshes.

Story continues below

"I have no doubt," John Walsh said. "I've never had any doubt."

Many names have been mentioned in connection to the case in the years since the killing, including serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, but Toole's has persistently nagged detectives. John Walsh has long said he believed the drifter was responsible, saying investigators found at Toole's home in Jacksonville a pair of green shorts and a sandal similar to what Adam was wearing.

Toole died in prison of cirrhosis in 1996 at the age of 49. He was serving five life sentences for murders unrelated to Adam's death.

The Walshes, who appeared Tuesday flanked by their other children, long ago derided the investigation as botched. Still, John Walsh praised the Hollywood police department for closing the case.

"This is not to look back and point fingers, but it is to let it rest," he said.

Adam Walsh went missing from a Hollywood mall on July 27, 1981. Fishermen discovered his severed head in a canal 120 miles away two weeks later. The rest of his body was never found.

Authorities made a series of crucial errors, losing the bloodstained carpeting in Toole's car _ preventing DNA testing _ and the car itself. It was a week after the boy's disappearance before the FBI got involved.

"So many mistakes were made," John Walsh said in 1997, upon the release of his book "Tears of Rage," which harshly criticized the Hollywood Police Department's work on the case. "It was shocking, inexcusable and heartbreaking."

For all that went wrong in the probe, the case contributed to massive advances in police searches for missing youngsters and a notable shift in the view parents and children hold of the world.

Adam's death, and his father's activism on his behalf, helped put faces on milk cartons, shopping bags and mailbox flyers, started fingerprinting programs and increased security at schools and stores. It spurred the creation of missing persons units at every large police department.

"In 1981, when a child disappeared, you couldn't enter information about a child into the FBI database. You could enter information about stolen cars, stolen guns but not stolen children," said Ernie Allen, president of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children, co-founded by John Walsh. "Those things have all changed."

The case also prompted national legislation to create a national database and toll-free line devoted to missing children, and led to the start of "America's Most Wanted," which brought those cases into millions of homes.

What it also did, said Mount Holyoke College sociologist and criminologist Richard Moran, is make children and adults alike exponentially more afraid.

"He ended up really producing a generation of cautious and afraid kids who view all adults and strangers as a threat to them and it made parents extremely paranoid about the safety of their children," Moran said.

my family and i lived in miami when adam was kidnapped. it was a terrible thing, all over the news by john walsh's insistence, thank god.

however, i have seen some documentaries on the kidnapping/murder that indicated jeffrey dalmer worked in a nearby subway, had a "hiding place," and that some in law enforcement came to believe it was dalmer, not toole, who killed adam. the walsh's however discount that theory, obviously. but it was an interesting angle, nonetheless.

i'm glad the walsh family finally has the sad closure they were seeking.

The Walshes have suffered beyond anything that we can comprehend. Yes, much good has resulted and Adam was that beacon of justice for the rescue/capture of so many through "Most Wanted".

Many responders write that now they will have "closure" But will the parents really have "closure". I don't know. What is closure? I for one feel that although they now have their answer after so many years of suffering, they will never close the door Yes, Life continues, but in their case, their wings have been clipped. In honor of their son, it's alright to keep that door open...just a little bit. They can never keep Adam away, nor should they.

Bless them...I hope they will fly again.

May the Walshes finally be able to move forward. The hole that the loss of a child leaves can never be closed and when the death is under such horrendous circumstances the pain is beyond bearable but hopefully the can find peace in knowing this animal will never harm anyone else and the adam lives on in their good works.

I hope this brings some closure, but this doesn't stop AMW from running. That show has done so much good. Hail John Walsh for sticking with it and never giving up.

Yup, July 27, 1981. That was the last time any kid was ever seen alone. This was such a tragic event and my heart breaks for Adam's parents but remember back in the 70's we were allowed to go off and PLAY without or parents? This and other sensationalized missing kids cases has RUINED childhood. I spent hours and hours playing in places my parents would never have found me in - and I lived to tell the tale, so did the rest of my friends. My kids have barely left their parents sight line since they left the womb! That's pretty tragic too.

I think the fact that the current generation actually finds being overprotective as something worth complaining about is a sign of how good their lives are. It's like people who complain about suburbs because they have no personality. It's not enough that they have large homes, convenient access to large shopping centers, parks for their children etc... they need the place to be jazzed up a little to.

I don't know where you live and I don't want to know, but kids still catch a breath playing and walking in my town. However, it's not such a bad thing that parents are more involved and keeping an eye on the kids and even sledding and swimming and playing ball with them. What kid ever disliked a parent spending quality play time with them?

Adam Walsh is not the only child to be abducted and killed/molested. In the early 1980s, I heard a judge (Sol Gothard) from Metarie, Louisiana describe some of the sexual acts perpetrated on young children (babies' fists are just the right size for anal penetration, I learned). That was the reason I panicked when my son wandered off in the shopping mall.

Since mental patients can not be locked up permanently and most can be managed with medication, we have a lot more disturbed people wandering around than we did when we were kids.

Oh yeah, I did run across a flasher when I was a kid, walking to the pool with my younger brother. No physical harm, but there was some emotional trauma.

I have no trouble allowing him to roam the neighborhood now that he is twelve, but he carries my cell phone.

Ah yes, the glorious '70s when children were allowed to be children.

I grew up in the 1970s too, and we roamed all over town until dark riding our bikes, playing doorbell ditch, what have you...

and yes, we survived....

but I also remember a flasher exposing himself to me while I was on my bike... a creep who made an obscene phone call to me when I was a kid home alone...the neighborhood "pervert" that all the kids knew to avoid (how did we know? what did that person do to another kid?). pre-teen sex and drug usage. All was not rosy or safe.

We survived. But it wasn't all that safe.

Children safe in the 70's and 80's? Molestation by priests was rampant. Don't you think kids are safer now from priests now that this "unspoken" crime has been revealed? Don't you think parents are rightly more cautious too?

Let's not make the "olden" days that warm and fuzzy. You wouldn't believe the crimes that happened to my circle of friends when I was growing up in the rural south.

There's a parallel between Mr. John Walsh and the fictional Bruce Wayne, both rising from personal tragedy to become a scourge upon criminals. Though we live in a dark and terrible world, people like him make a real difference.

We wish him peace at last.

I dunno that children being cautious of adults and adults being paranoid about their child's safety is a downside. Crimes against children have always been with us--when my mother was 9, in 1947, someone tried to snatch her off the side of the road. Her paranoia kept me safe, and my children are now adults.

May the Walsh's find consolation, although as a parent, I don't think I ever could. May Adam rest in peace.

Peace be with John Walsh ...

Let there be a special place in hell for the animal who would do this to a little boy.

I am glad that the Walshes have some closure, but I'd still like to know what makes the authority's know that Ottis Toole was the killer. Can someone help me out here?

the police are not revealing their evidence to the general public

the nytimes article was totally confusing at least this article made that much clear

if john walsh got closure you can be sure the evidence is incontroversial

one long sad slog for a good father

truth heals

completely agree.

seems too convenient to me and I would rather know the truth than be comforted by a lie.

Well he confessed on his deathbed to a niece who told the Walshes. He had confessed and recanted prior.Guess all are agreeing that the deathbed confession was in fact the truth.

Sorry, but I have never believed in "death bed" confessions, because it sounds like something out of a movie. I guess I'll never know. That's OK though. I have more important things to attend to.

One more thing: Just because "all are agreeing," doesn't make it true. History has shown that over and over again.

If that is what you want to believe, then have at it. I can't stop you, nor do I want to :)

I had a friend from college whose murder was the subject of an hour-long speacial featured on this show. Without Mr. Walsh's work, the case would probably have never been solved. Now, thank God, the man responsible will never again see the light of day outside prison--still a fate too good for him. Although I have opposed the death penalty for years now, I don't know if I could resist giving that guy a good beating personally for what he did to Jamie. And that must pale in comparison to what the Walshes feel towards Toole.

I am grateful to John Walsh for all that he has done over the years to help our victimized children and to capture criminals. Because of the tragic loss of Adam, John drove himself to work so hard to help so many. The Walsh Family is finally getting some much needed closure after all these years. John is right, Adam's death was not in vain, the legacy is all the good that came from John's work with numerous enforcement agencies and lawmakers. Our children is our most cherished resource, let's protect them as best we can. Thank you John Walsh, a true hero.

It was such a tragic situation with little Adam Walsh. The peace of mind of DEFINITELY knowing that this man murdered this innocent child provides another step in the closure for the Walsh family.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Walsh's and any other family living with the grief of a senseless, unanswered murder of a family member.

Thank you Mr. Walsh for your devoted attention to America's Most Wanted that has helped bring many criminals to justice, and bringing closure to so many families while you waited decades to realize the same!!
