Berlin Memorial To Gay Victims Of Nazis Vandalized

BERLIN — Berlin's memorial to gay victims of the Nazis has been vandalized for the second time in four months.

Berlin police say a window on the outside of the memorial has been broken, probably with a stone.

The window allows visitors to see inside the concrete memorial and view a video of a same-sex couple kissing

The memorial in Berlin's Tiergarten park was inaugurated in May and suffered similar damage to the same window in August.

A protest held after that attack to denounce intolerance and homophobia drew more than 100 people including Berlin's openly gay mayor, Klaus Wowereit.

Why is the memorial a video of a same sex couple kissing? Isn't the whole reason for the memorial to say that it is no big deal that same sex couples exist?

To me a better memorial would be a list of the accomplishments of the gay survivors of the holocaust. It should show how homosexual people contribute to society and what is lost when you single out a group for extermination.

Sadly, this isn't surprising.

Just the fact that the Memorial exists in Berlin, and that the mayor is openly gay, really surprises me. Maybe thier country is less homophobic than ours. But I'm going to guess that in their larger cities this may be true, but not in the rural areas, much like here in the US.
