UPDATE 5:30 PM

Spitzer's wife, Silda, helps edit his columns for Slate, according to a tipster for New York magazine's Daily Intel blog:

Newly christened Slate columnist Eliot Spitzer is really warming up to his new role as a media professional. Last night, while he was "mingling extensively" at the Website's holiday party, an Intel tipster overheard him actually discussing his process: "I feel like I'm better at expressing my self through writing than speaking," he said. "I usually take about an hour to write [a column] and then send it to my wife to edit." He has not yet adopted the slovenly dress code popular among his peers, however. "I guess I'm the only one here wearing a suit," another eavesdropper heard him remarking.

John Gapper of the Financial Times caught up with former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer Monday night -- at a former massage parlor.

If Eliot Spitzer were to choose a venue at which to make his re-entry into society, he would presumably not have selected a former massage parlour in Chinatown on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

But Mr. Spitzer, who resigned as governor of New York state after getting caught up in a call girl scandal this spring, did not get the choice. Happy Ending, the former parlour in question, is now a sleek bar and it is where Slate, the online magazine was holding its seasonal drinks party.

Mr. Spitzer this month started to write a column for Slate as part of his comeback - he wrote last week about the Detroit bail-out - and so he showed up at the Slate party to be sociable.

...

I went over afterwards to ask him how he was enjoying life as a columnist. "It sucks," he said with a grin. "I used to be governor of New York".

In his first Slate column, Spitzer tackled the financial crisis:

Last month, as the financial crisis and the government rescue plan dominated headlines, almost everyone overlooked a news item that could have enormous long-term impact: GE Capital announced the acquisition of five mid-size airplanes--with an option to buy 20 more--produced by CACC, a new, Chinese-government-sponsored airline manufacturer.

Why is that so significant? Two reasons: First, just as small steps signaled the Asian entry into our now essentially bankrupt auto sector 50 years ago, so the GE acquisition signals Asia's entry into one of our few remaining dominant manufacturing sectors. Boeing is still the world's leading commercial aviation company. CACC's emergence--and its particular advantage selling to Asian markets--means that Boeing now faces the rigors of an entirely new competitive playing field and that our commercial airplane sector is likely to suffer enormously over the coming decades.

He doesn't sound very sorry. He may not like it, but most people don't want a governor who goes to prostitutes. I have a very low opinion of johns and I wouldn't vote for one.

There's a difference between being free to do what you want without government interference and having other people approve of it. In fact, social pressure to behave is one of the best arguments for keeping government out of morality. A bunch of liberal male politicians seem to have trouble understanding this.

I also keep wondering why Spitzer was hired to write a column after all this. Did Slate want to help him out of his well-deserved problems? Or were they just hoping to get lots of publicity?

Wake up. Hiring a guy who used prostitutes can't be above 500 on the list of "most morally questionable actions taken shamelessly by a branch of the mainstream media".

He was the attorney general, for pete's sake who was always giving press conferences about how he was busting prostiution rings. He brought them down, and then was their best customer. It would be one thing if Donald Trump were caught doing this, but Spitzer portrayed himself as the great Moral Crimebusting Attorney General who was going to scourge NY of scum like prostitutes. That's the problem with him, The hypocricy.

why is he using a prostitution ring that falls under a category of rings that he used to prosecute? for me, the hypocrisy is what sucks. it's like a cop who smokes pot, and arrests pot smokers.

You'd be surprised how many "nice" men you know pay for it.

And maybe they hired him to write columns because he has some important stuff to say re: financial crisis. But it might be above your "pay" grade.

Trite but too true: Spitzer violated a law. He had to resign as Gov of NY because he violated the law by being a john. Spitzer still has the skill & temperment of a vicious prosecutor. The feds need vicious, dogged prosecutors. Spitzer is the epitome of vicious, dogged prosecutors. Many would be overjoyed if Spitzer were to be on Maloff's case. There are a great many federal cases which urgently need Spitzer as prosecutor &/or supervisor of talented vicious, vindictive, dogged prosecutors since 9/15/08.. Obama or his AG could throw a bone to Puritans by employing Spitzer with the limitation that he couldn't work on prostution cases.
Spitzer & his team would be freed to go after malefactors of great wealth. The USA would benefit if Spitzer were free to hound, prosecute & convict Wall St & international thieves. One would see the mavens & wunderkind of finance turning themselves in to avoid facing Spitzer & his team. A Spitzer plea bargain would involve restitution, fines, slammer time & being barred from the financial markets for life.
If Spitzer ever again was involved in prostitution-we all know what he would face. Being a powerful prosecutor might control Spitzer's lust. It's worth a try.

"Obama or his AG could throw a bone to Puritans by employing Spitzer with the limitation that he couldn't work on prostitution cases."

So then what if they put him on drug cases and he starts doing drugs?

The man saw a line that said "STOP HERE" and he couldn't resist crossing it.

I don't think his problem is prostitution per se.

I think his problem is really himself and he's going to take that problem with him no matter where he goes.

Um, did you follow the story? As attorney general, he busted many prostitution rings. Whether you disagree with prostitution being illegal, in New York State it is, and he broke the law - all the while badmouthing all those who used prostitution rings. Do you get it now?

Hey Eliot Spitzer, I will tell you what "s*cks." Being unemployed after being laid off 7 months ago. Telling my kids that there will be no Christmas presents. Watching a tow truck leave with my car that I couldn't pay for. Selling my belongings on Ebay and Craigslist in order to keep my house and feed my children. I played by the rules - didn't lose my job in a humiliating call girl scandal - and I can't find ANY job that pays more than the $275/week from unemployment. I bet Slate is paying you a bit more than that. So shut your pie hole. yahoo.com.com

Well said, pab08. I would just like to add one thing. Any piece of publicity that further underlines the venal character of so-called public officials (even former ones) is a strike for the progress of the human race. Keep exposing your crassness, Eliot Spitzer, and thereby perhaps souring the public on hypocritical politicians (sorry for the redundancy). To tell you the truth, I am becoming more of an anarcho-capitalist every day. The type of individual that is drawn to government work is exactly the wrong type of individual to be in any position of influence or power. Go get a real job, Eliot Spitzer, as I am sure your column for Slate contains nothing illuminating but simply more statist nonsense.

Spitzer launched an investigation that brought down the Gambino Family.

As attorney general, Spitzer prosecuted cases relating to corporate white collar crime, securities fraud, internet fraud and environmental protection. He most notably pursued cases against companies involved in computer chip price fixing, investment bank stock price inflation, and the 2003 mutual fund scandal. He also sued Richard Grasso, the former chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, claiming he had failed to fully inform the board of directors of his deferred compensation package, which exceeded $140 million

Gee. I wonder who could EVER wish him ill.
