In this Dec. 12, 2008, file photo U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. speaks to reporters outside his house in Chicago. A spokesman for Jackson told The Associated Press Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, that the congressman has talked to federal investigators about interactions with Gov. Rod Blagojevich and others for years. But Jackson has denied initiating or authorizing anyone to promise anything Blagojevich on his behalf. (AP Photo/Paul Beaty, File)

CHICAGO — Shortly after his 2002 election, Gov. Rod Blagojevich told Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. he didn't appoint the congressman's wife for lottery director because he had refused to make a $25,000 donation to the governor's campaign, a person familiar with the conversation told The Associated Press.

"That's why she's not getting the job," the person quoted Blagojevich as saying. The person, a Jackson associate who was interviewed Tuesday by the AP, spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing federal investigation.

Jackson's name has played prominently ever since Blagojevich was arrested last week on corruption charges, including allegations that the governor tried to sell or trade President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat for personal gain.

Jackson has been identified as one of the candidates Blagojevich was considering for the seat, and a criminal complaint said his supporters were willing to raise $1.5 million for the governor if he picked the congressman.

The complaint quotes Blagojevich as saying on federal wiretaps that an associate of the candidate offered to raise money for him if he made the Jackson appointment happen.

Jackson spokesman Kenneth Edmonds declined to comment on the account of the exchange shortly after Blagojevich's 2002 election but said the Democratic congressman, the son of civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, has approached federal investigators to discuss the governor and others for years.

"He has shared information with federal prosecutors about public corruption during the past several years, including information about Blagojevich and others," Edmonds said.

Randall Samborn, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago, declined to comment, as did Blagojevich spokesman Lucio Guerrero.

Jackson has openly sought the Senate position but denies initiating or authorizing anyone to promise anything to Blagojevich on his behalf. The congressman has said federal prosecutors told him he is not a target of their investigation.

The Jackson associate interviewed by the AP did not know whether Jackson's wife, Sandi had asked for the state lottery job. At the time, Blagojevich was the first incoming Democratic governor after years of Republican rule and had scores of state jobs to fill.

"The governor had kind of penciled Sandi in as lottery director and then asked for contributions from the congressman," the person said.

Sandi Jackson, who has since been elected to the Chicago City Council, did not return a call to her office seeking comment.

In April, the Chicago Tribune reported that an examination of campaign donations to Blagojevich showed that three in four donors who gave exactly $25,000 received administration favors such as state board appointments or contracts.

It's also the same amount of money that figured prominently in the testimony of a government witness in the political corruption trial this summer of political fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko.

Ali Ata, the former executive director of the Illinois Finance Authority, testified that Blagojevich spoke encouragingly about getting him a job in his administration after he personally brought him a $25,000 campaign contribution.

Rezko, who raised more than $1 million for Blagojevich's campaign fund, was convicted of shaking down companies seeking state business for campaign contributions.

Exactly....
People have been so jaded by crooked politicians - when they see one who is the real deal, they don't believe it. LOL
They would rather have the likes of Ted Stevens, et al.
Jesse is a dream come true. Flawless and trustworthy in every way. YES. I know him personally. He is the perfect man for the Senate job. Wow. If he and Caroline got in there, America would really be on the path to progress and change for the better. Second-generation soldiers.

Jesse is obviously qualified for the senate seat and has paid his dues. If it comes out that he is innocent, I hope he is seriously considered for the seat. It would be a shame for this scandal to hurt his chances if he hasn't been involved.

You can call it stalking if you want, but it is, once again deflecting. He posted something YOU wrote. You're doing exactly what you accuse others of doing. He pointed out the truth and your answer, was response was to almost dodge the issue entire and point out stalking. If you're going to write on a public forum be prepared to be called out on what you've written.

Don't know you sir, can't dislike you. However since I have your attention, can you give your analysis of the last eight years. Give us your rationale for voting for George, twice. I notice a propensity of people of your mindset to avoid threads that deal with this subject and jump all over threads like this and give their "expert analysis" about anything about Obama and other Democrats.

I honestly don't even need to look at the context, because whatever it is, your comment is unreasonable and offensive.

The most amusing thing is that, a lot of people bashing JJ Jr. because he's supposedly to be hiding something... and when he didn't really hide it, but rather take it to the authority, they either just don't care, or call him a sn1tch like he did something horrible by not playing along.

Come on guys, if you're going to bash someone, at least be consistent.

We all should be considerate of people and in this particular case politicians in the sense that everyone is innocent until is proven guilty. It's basic yet fundamental pillar upon which human rights rest. So, I would say that Jackson should not be pointed at as guilty in this tumultuous story by the public opinion. But I understand that the media is pushing it too far at the expense of the presumption of innocence. Once again, I believe that it's high time politicians thought well in adavance about people they represent before they do a disgraceful thing a la Blagojevich.

Well... they're trying to group Jackson Jr. with Obama in terms of IL political circle... and if Jackson Jr. is a crook, they'd be able to have something more to print on how Obama was with the wrong crowd.

It's simple, really!

Obama wanted to release the information regarding his team conversations with blago but the federal attorney was the one to ask Obama to delay the move. We all know now that jesse Jr. had no part in the scandal. Matter of fact, Jesse Jr. was helping the feds all along in setting up blago. If you think about it, why single out Jesse Jr. as # 5 but dont reveal 1 -4??? - it raises questions to the intelligent minds. 80% of Americans approve of Obama on his transition team - no one have a pure past but Obama's picks are coming along nicely. These picks are people who will try very hard to put this country back on track despite the naysayers who want to pick apart every little thing. Actually, Obama have picked someone for everybodys' liking. This will be the most diverse cabinet team that Washington had in decades maybe centuries so let's appreciate what we're getting especially after 8 years of a diastrous republican President. It's funny how Eric Holder & Jesse Jr.(blacks) have been coming under crticism from the GOP & other hidden racists. Obama is picking more females, more blacks & hispanics along with veteran republicans and democrats - these are people who are considered the best or most productive in getting us out this hell hole so take a chill pill some of you all and let's see how this play out before we're quick to pass negative judgement.

No judgement required here. Little Jesse is a rat. Just like his phony dad who was crying the alligator tears without even wiping his face as any real person would do at Obama's acceptance speech. And a month earlier he was whispering to cut Obama's balls off.

No, the Jackson 5 can crawl down the same hole as Blago and Bush....

There's lots of room in the sewer.

I am confused. You think it's a bad thing that Jesse ratted out Blago? Why?

inluvwkeitholbermann: I have to admit that I DO disagree with your previous post, but never with your right to your opinion. I never even considered whether you were black or white, because it didn't seem relevant to either anything you posted or to my reply to your post. In fact, I'm also black and also from Chicago - and knowing now that you're from Chicago too leaves me even more bewildered by your comments: Being familiar with Chicago politics, why do you think that the "public" does not trust Jesse Jackson Jr. or that his colleagues in the Illinois legislature would turn against him for possibly being instrumental in Blago's arrest? As a constituent of Jackson's, I know that the residents in my district are very supportive of him, and I've never heard anyone, even outside of my district, express disapproval of Jackson. Most Chicagoans also know that Blagojevich has been unpopular with his colleagues for a number of years, and it's hard to imagine that any of them would disapprove of what Jackson did. In fact, this is why they've voted unanimously - both Republicans and Democrats - to begin impeachment hearings against him. As far as Jackson and Obama are concerned, they're friends; but I think the only reason Jesse Jr. was not recommended was that a consensus was probably reached among Obama's team that Jackson would not be able to win the greater Illinois electorate in 2010, and this was definitely a consideration in making their recommendations.

Also a Jackson constituent and a supporter. Being the son of Sr. has been a double-edged sword. He has certainly benefited immensely, but the name, the sins of the father have made him the target of undue criticism. I don't know anyone in Chicago who hasn't come to despise Blagojevich. You are so right, Jr would have a difficult time winning a state wide election even before this controversy.

there's only 3 "sins" i can think of JJ sr did

what other "sins" did he do?

Come on now. Blago has been under a cloud of suspicion for years. Why was JJ Jr. playing the game with him? Look at his father. JJ Jr. learned the art of the shakedown from him. Why else would he have held that fundraiser for Blago so recently? Open your eyes already.

So? I've been talking to one of our department heads since he announced that his right-hand person might not return from maternity leave. Bless her heart...I hope she stays home with her baby. And? So what? What's wrong with that? I want her job. I want him to see my resume first -- before the job is advertised. IF she decides not to come back. Bless her heart.
