CHICAGO — A dozen grade schoolers got their own chance to quiz President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday, getting an earful on such issues as longer school days, how it feels to be on television, and even the first puppy's "business."

"How will you feel when you move to the White House?" one child asked.

"I'm going to be excited," Obama said, explaining that he would have a "pretty nice office" in the shape of an oval when he got to Washington.

Obama was joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden and Arne Duncan, the head of the Chicago school system and Obama's pick for education secretary. The three greeted the youngsters, who ranged from first-graders to fourth-graders, after a news conference at the Dodge Renaissance Academy in Chicago.

Obama met with them in a library at the academy. They sat on the carpet in front of him, each eagerly raising their hands to ask questions and discuss what they were learning in school.

"Decimals," Obama replied to one student. "Wow, Joe doesn't even know his decimals," he joked about Biden.

The president-elect talked about how his daughters, 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha, will get a dog when they make the move to the White House next month.

"They've been asking for a dog for years now," he said.

Obama said the girls would need to take care of their pet. And that didn't just mean feeding and walking the dog.

"You know, if they do their business, if they've got some poop _ you got to make sure that you're not just leaving it there," Obama said.

The president-elect fielded more questions from the children than he did from the members of the press, who came to the school for a morning news conference where Obama announced Duncan as his education secretary.

Not all the children's questions were lighthearted. One child, who said a cousin was serving in Iraq, asked Obama about the troops overseas.

"One of the things that I promised I would do is to try to bring this war in Iraq to an end," Obama said, adding that he hoped to have them home in about a year and a half.

Another asked Obama what he would do to represent the efforts of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Obama said not just presidents, but everyone could do their part to honor King's work by treating people with respect and listening.

"Dr. King used to talk about the fact that, you know, no matter what your job is, you want to do your best," Obama said. "And right now you're job is to learn, so when you guys are in class you got to make sure you're working as hard as you can."

At least our President-elect won't have to worry about Joe taking the matter out of context, which is a blessing. We're proud to have you as our President-elect, Joe! Please don't change, and most of all, don't discard that sense of humor of yours--I like it, and it keeps you sane when under pressure.

The children are our future. Therefore, I appreciate that President-elect Obama took the time to inspire and motivate them. How a person treats children says a lot about that person's true soul. Thank you President-elect Obama for taking the time to listen to them. They are smarter and more imaginative than a lot of people give them credit for.

This web site is getting to be like the local news with come-on headlines like "Big storm brewing. More at 11." Then, tuning in at 11, you learn the storm is off the coast of Malaysia and has been downgraded to a tropical storm while meanwhile you are in Akron.

Have you been hiring a lot of excitable English majors, lately?

Reminds me of the line from The Princess Bride where Andre the Giant says, "I don't think it means what you think it means."

You hit the nail on the head. They do not hire journalists anymore. They hire English majors now who know how to tell a story, but do not know how to report the news.

HuffPo mocking grammar too? I'm pretty sure P.E. Obama didn't say, "And right now you're job is to learn..." but rather 'your' job is to learn. Maybe while brainstorming the misleading headline they forgot to proof-read?

President Elect Obama and Vice President Biden are a compliment to each other and I sincerely pray that these two fine gentlemen who obviously and apparently have a great deal of respect for each other, deflect any and all negative comments that will be said or printed to instigate division between them. Surely, you have something more significant to report than this!

If Huffpo is not careful, the National Enquirer will surpass Huffpo for accurate news reporting.

It is clear that many people on this administration
actually likes each other. Teasing is way different than mocking-
The reason that we rarely get a look inside government
is because the media always assumes something, mocks something-
which closes the door to how people can behave.
These "guys" were just having fun-

and the misleading headline intimates otherwise...that's too bad. Joe and Barack obviously get along well. I've read articles saying they tease and joke with each other in meetings. I saw the photo that went with this story and it was wonderful...Obama and Biden were so comfortable sitting with the kids in the classroom. It would be nice to see not only headlines, but articles that hightlight their positive relationship. Every article I've seen or read where one or both of the gentlemen are with kids, the kids seem to react comfortably natural around them. Cute and telling. Would it take so much to write a positive story once in a while? I'd read it and enjoy it.

Maybe the headline would be better received if it were, "Obama teases Biden on math"? Mocks seems harsher than the intention was.

I just have to say that I love Obama's ability to talk to any audience. Saying the word "poop" to a group of kids was a homerun! You know that they all left that amazing meeting saying, "He said, 'poop'" and they will remember that more than anything else. Especially the boys or the girls who like potty humor (like me).

That's exactly what I was going to say! My son is in kindergarten, and I know the Poop part would have been the best for him and his buddies. The president says "Poop!" Obama's ease with children is really one of his greatest traits (among many). Joe Biden, too. Love him.

Heck, he said "poop" on national TV during his interview with Barbara Walters. She looked pretty discomfitted by the fact that the president-elect was discussing poop scooping. Stuff like saying "poop" is what makes Obama "real" and appealing to a wide range of people.

You are not alone, it's interesting to watch. Joe is about as real as they come, and kids sure pick up on that stuff. I love Joe Biden.

I chuckled when I saw Joe. I think he's so down to earth.
I see nothing wrong with the way he's sitting. I think it's what makes him kinda cool.
No wonder PE Obama chose him as his VP.
