Las Vegas Snow

Tourists and residents of Las Vegas alike received quite a shock as a snowstorm blanketed sin city's most famous monuments. It also caused some travel headaches:

The ongoing snowstorm has stopped flights from landing or leaving at McCarran International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"No planes are departing for Las Vegas from anywhere in the U.S. right now," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

Gregor said the airport doesn't have snow removal or deicing equipment, which means there's no way for snow-covered planes to leave safely.

"The forecast is not looking particularly promising for anybody who wants to fly into Las Vegas," he said.

PROGRESSIVES AND THE ICE AGE

Mother nature is moving forward into a new ice age and liberals are frozen solid in the passing age of global warming. How can they call themselves progressives when they're lagging so far behind?

Well, considering your previous comment was an outright lie, I'd have to say progressives have very little to worry about when it comes to either the Ice Age or to vapid neocon trolls who couldn't acknowledge a fact if it danced the Charleston in front of them, whistling Dixie.

NATURE'S WONDERFUL BALANCING ACT

What we are losing in ice mass at the North Pole we are gaining in the South as the Antartica ice sheets are thickening and growing. This a wonderful compensatory balancing act by nature that should keep the water levels pretty much at bay.

All you people pointing to this as an issue of global warming need to get over yourselves.

This happens every so often. I was in Vegas 2 years ago on April F.ool's and it snowed that day too. Just one of those weird things that can occur when all the conditions are perfect.

I'm not saying global warming is a hoax, I'm just saying those of you pointing at this and going "A-HA!" are short in brain power. This isn't a gotcha moment. I've lived in places where it's snowed on the 4th of July.

I lived in Las Vegas for most of my life. And I've seen it snow more than once. It never stuck, but the point is that it has snowed there before.

What we see happening in Las Vegas is a warning that Global Warming is a bad bet that Obama is about to wager billions on.

Right. You'd rather spend all that money bombing Arabs and letting American children go without health care.

News flash. Nobody cares what neocons think anymore, except where it factors into explaining motive to a grand jury.

What do the global warming denier nutcases do when there aren't any posts like these to kick around? Or do they multi-task, like go after Obama's citizenship and blame Clinton for the current economic mess?

. The real cause of global warming has been a slow but steady increase in the output of solar energy, this documented by solar astronomers since the mid 1950’s. Don’t believe me? Then Google the phrase “earth getting hotter” and start reading. Over several decades orbiting Mars observatories have recorded the steady reduction in the size of the Martian polar ice caps made of (guess what?) – FROZEN CARBON DIOXIDE. The rate of reduction is proportional to the retreat of high mountain ice and the retreat of artic and sub artic ocean ice fields here on Earth. I can assure you that no one on Mars is operating coal fired power plants or driving gas guzzling SUV’s. (Again – Google the phrase “ mars ice caps shrinking”). The sun is causing a small increase in climate temperature and there is absolutely nothing that you or anybody or anything can do about it. It does so in cycles that solar astronomers scientists are only just now beginning to fathom. It does this again and again over hundreds of millions of years. Period. But guess what? The solar storm-cycle known as "Sun Spots" has ended for now. Don't believe it? Go to this link for a picture: http://www.iceagenow.com/The_s Boy, better go up in the attic and find your warmies - because you guys are screwed!

That there are cyclical global and solar influences on our climate is not really in dispute. The question is whether or not our activities are having a incremental influence on the "normal" climate at the time. And the evidence is overwhelming that this is so. As a denier points out below, CO2 has increased from 3.2 per thousand to 3.8 per thousand parts in our atmosphere - a 19% increase that can most certainly be traced to burning fossil fuels. And it doesn't include all the methane and other more effective gasses we've released, as well. In a closed system, over time, this can and does cause climate conditions to change. Disputing this is like arguing that the earth is flat.

But let's assume you're right. The solution prescribed for combatting climate change - conserving energy - still makes sense!!! Fossil fuel does cause particulate pollution (although this has gotten better - but only because of stricter regulations).

But much more importantly, it's because oil is the most precious resource we have. When it's gone, it's gone. And the notion that we can just "drill baby drilll" and everything will be fine is the most short sighted and naive policy positions there is. And "clean coal" is nothing but fantasy. And nuclear? Well, just remember that the iron laws of probability state that if you combine any non-zero probabilit with infinity, you get certainty. An accident is inevitable.

Conserve fossil fuels. Your kids will thank you.

Ooooh... I'm a "denier". I'm so ashamed.

It's not the earth but your arguments that are flat... You point to a whopping 19% increase in a TRACE ELEMENT as something major, skyrocketting from .32% to .38%. What about the other 99.62% of the atmosphere? It has been reduced by .06%. Less than one 10th of 1 percent. But you actually believe the dogma that this increase has been able to throw in to chaos the entire ecological balance of our planet. Please man, get a hold of yourself.

I and my fellow "deniers" are all for reduced pollution and clean air... But fabricated hysteria is a tool of tyrants.

Yes, let's continue with finding cleaner fuels and smarter energy. I'm all for it. But please, please drop the whole brown shirt approach to enviromental orthodoxy. Our planet is not in peril. At least not from CO2. Period.

It follows from wrathofcon's argument that global warming isn't limited to earth but is an interplanetary phenomenon proved, as he points out, by the retreating ice caps on Mars

Your reading and comprehension skills are poor. Look at the first article in your suggested search. It tells us that man-made causes are ACCELERATING and AGGRAVATING the warming trend that the sun may be contributing towards:

~
"But these previous periods of heating and cooling were not influenced by the burning of fossil fuels, and the current resulting trend toward higher global average temperatures, according to Margaret Torn of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

"It means the warming is happening faster, each decade is actually warming faster than it would have. It's the pace of change that will be one of the big problems. It's how humans adapt and the cost that will depend on the rate of change of climate."

Richard S. Courtney, a U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) expert reviewer and a U.K.-based climate and atmospheric science consultant snorted, "Rubbish! Global warming is not 'accelerating.' Global warming has stopped. There has been no statistically significant rise in [mean global temperature or MGT] since 1995 and MGT has fallen since 1998 . . . "Arctic ice advances and recedes over decades. 2007 saw a minimum in Arctic ice cover in the short period that it has been monitored using satellites. But 2008 saw the most rapid growth in Arctic ice cover in that same period and Arctic ice cover is now back to the average it has had in the period. . . . “anybody who proclaims that 'Global warming is accelerating' is a liar, a fool, or both."

News Flash! According to the "scientific community" of the middle ages, it was flat.... How many years of cooling (1998-2008) will it take before you guys come to your senses? The earth has had radical climate change for a billion years. The "man made" global warming scare is a fraud and scam. If you and the media were really serious about scientific truth, you would not be censoring scientific debate, bullying anyone who has their doubts.... And there are thousands of PhDs who think the whole thing is hyped.

Only 95-97% of scientists believe it. You and the 3% MUST be right.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:11 PM on 12/18/2008

Actually the notion that people thought the earth was flat in the middle ages is a myth.

The earth being not flat but a sphere has been widely accepted since about 300 BC.

And in that case the scientists figured it out first but were opposed by religious folk completely ignorant of the facts. Sound familiar?
