Las Vegas Snow

Tourists and residents of Las Vegas alike received quite a shock as a snowstorm blanketed sin city's most famous monuments. It also caused some travel headaches:

The ongoing snowstorm has stopped flights from landing or leaving at McCarran International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"No planes are departing for Las Vegas from anywhere in the U.S. right now," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

Gregor said the airport doesn't have snow removal or deicing equipment, which means there's no way for snow-covered planes to leave safely.

"The forecast is not looking particularly promising for anybody who wants to fly into Las Vegas," he said.

See a slideshow of famous Vegas monuments covered in snow here.

Unstable weather. That's what I see. Some places freeze, other places burn. Meanwhile the ice is melting under polar bears, there's no new snow on certain mountain peaks, and the water supply will be in danger for people in many areas. Farmers are moving their crops north, been doing so for years now, so it's definitely been warmer for them.

Where I live, in southern usa, it's been warmer every year. Some winters I wear a sweater but don't even need a jacket. When I was a child, I remember the nights being very cool, even in summer, but it's not like that anymore. It's pretty warm most of the time all year around.

And that's not even counting the snow that was being cut and snorted in rooms throughout Vegas.

Man, folks in Vegas must be freezing with all that global warming hitting their city.

G.W = climate change = more often, more extreme weather events, cold and hot, wet and dry.

Don't worry. Al Gore will spin this: "It snowed in Las Vegas BECAUSE of global warming."

As opposed to Michael "I Concocted A Way To Resurrect Dinosaurs So You Have To Accept My Sci-Fi Balderdash As Gospel" Crichton's "explanations" that this is all the result of Hollyweirdoes trying to screw over the economy? How fortunate for him that he died before having to see how wrong he was, huh?

If you can't tell weather from climate, are you really qualified to have an opinion on this?

Snow in and of itself does not prove or disprove man made global warming. Antartica is the coldest place on earth and has little snow.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:51 AM on 12/18/2008

All the wingnuts descend for one snowfall.I won't talk about how many scientists believe in global warming,or how any daily weather occurrence doesn't mean anything in the big scheme of things.
I would like to remind everyone that all this exhaust we spew into the atmosphere, from autos to coal fired electric generating plants to our home furnaces, lawnmowers, ships at sea etc.all have a bearing on what we absorb into our DNA.Worldwide there are more people buying cars, airplanes.More companies spewing poisons into our environment worldwide.I could go on for a lot longer but you get my drift.
This nonsense of having the left and right split themselves ideologically and argue about Global Warming while we destroy the planet is absurd.I don't care what side of the argument you take, you know if you start your car in a closed garage it won't be long before you're dead.Common sense will tell you if pollutants in the atmosphere are measurable and toxic you shouldn't breathe them.To wait until our environment is akin to a toilet is not the time to start working on the problem.

Oh, the gops see the problem all right. They just can't accept that their ideology is the prime contributor to it, and they also don't want to give up the feel-good lifestyle they've adopted to combat their post-Cold War suburban domestication.

THIS IS CLIMATE CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN

Changing from a warming trend into a global cooling trend caused by the disappearance of sun spots on the sun's surface

Except we're coming out of a Solar Minimum and sunspots are increasing again. Human induced global warming is a proven, scientific fact, just like evolution. One of the side effects of the global warming is that since the atmosphere, as a whole, has more energy and entorpy, there will be more severe and freakish storms. There can be snow in some places which rarely see it, or strange rain patterns.

Additionally, research has shown that there is no correlation between cosmic radiation or solar cycles and weather.

The "fact" of global warming clashes with the fact that anactic ice is thickening. Maybe there's warming in the upper upper over but not in the down down under. In which case it's not global.

New Jason Satellite Indicates 23-Year Global Cooling
By Roberto Jelash

Now it’s not just the sunspots that predict a 23-year global cooling. The new Jason oceanographic satellite shows that 2007 was a “cool” La Nina year—but Jason also says something more important is at work: The much larger and more persistent Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has turned into its cool phase, telling us to expect moderately lower global temperatures until 2030 or so.

Don't blame me. This is based on scientific evidence.

no factual quotes, Mogam, from the global warming scientific community? or are you just cherry picking so you can feel good? do you think all the pollution spewing from autos, factories, and mines around the world 24/7 has NO effect on earth's climate?

It pollutes the air that we breathe and is a legitimate health issue, but that's as far as it goes. As I said elsewhere if man made catastrophic global warming is a fact then why are the artic ice sheets thickening? Why is there melting in the north pole and not the south? If global warming were true it would affect every part of the globe with every high snow peaked mountain sharing the fate of Kilimanjaro

PRESIDENT COOL AND GLOBAL WARMING

We're at the start of a cyclic cooling trend just when we're about to inaugurate President Cool a man who embraces the obsolete view of catastrophic global warming and is planning to spend billions of dollars that we don';t have to stop it.

MY kids are loving it here. They're having a ball. Schools are closed today. We've gotten about 4 inches at my house. I haven't seen as heavy a snow fall since I drove across Indiana , Illinois, and Missouri in the winter about 8 years ago. This is a freak storm for here,

Not that it really matters if you're determined to deny it but global warming doesn't mean that all temperatures everywhere go up all the time. It means that the climate becomes less and less stable and less and less predictable and that causes very unusual behaviors to occur (snow in Las Vegas, 3 Cat 4+ storms in the same area in 3 years, Hurricane Epsilon?)

You are a global-warming heretic. You seem to believe the idea, but your reasoning is exactly the opposite of ideology of GW advocates. They say that the increase in man-generated CO2 creates a greenhouse effect leading to the increasing, and perhaps, irreversible warming of the planet. They give us a few years (the time-frame has been 10 years since about 1989) before the trend will be irreversible. The oceans will rise and the polar bears will drown. Now, you say, "Not really." Instead you insist that global warming is making climate less stable and predictable. Your statement is internally inconsistent. "Warming" means just that, warming. It does not mean warming and cooling unpredictably. Under Al Gore's theory the polar bears are doomed. Under your reasoning, polar bears could soon be running amuck. Or not.

You like to stick with the term "Global Warming" so that every cool day you can trot out your snarky comments. Most in the scientific community (I know your Guy In The Sky desn't permit you to look at facts) prefer the term "Global Climate Change".

Meanwhile, here outside Phila. I haven't had to shovel more than an inch in the past 3 years.

I do not think so. The term "global climate change" was introduced to the Bush Administration by Republican consultant Frank Luntz to make the term "global warming" appear less threatening. You can read this in the Wikipedia article on Luntz. Now that global warming advocates have attracted so much scientific criticism they have also moved from "warming" to "climate change." This ambiguous term can be made to mean anything about the climate. So, AGW advocates keep promoting their theories under a name which disguises their arguments as just another sort of climate change.
