Las Vegas Snow

Tourists and residents of Las Vegas alike received quite a shock as a snowstorm blanketed sin city's most famous monuments. It also caused some travel headaches:

The ongoing snowstorm has stopped flights from landing or leaving at McCarran International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"No planes are departing for Las Vegas from anywhere in the U.S. right now," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

Gregor said the airport doesn't have snow removal or deicing equipment, which means there's no way for snow-covered planes to leave safely.

"The forecast is not looking particularly promising for anybody who wants to fly into Las Vegas," he said.

I live in Vegas, but I am a native of California, specifically the Sierra Nevadas.

I am utterly flabbergasted at the amount of snow here.

While this would be a modest amount in the mountains, it's nuts to see in the middle of the desert.

It snows in Las Vegas, therefore global warming is a hoax?
What a whackoid conclusion. You flunk climate science 101.
(Doesn't "Nevada" mean "snowfall" in Spanish?)

The word is climate change...and it can cause situations like this, freak storms, tornados, floods, droughts and extreme temp. variations...here in NYC area, the temp has been fluctuating between 65 and 20 in a matter of days, over and over...more common in April than in December.

This is the dumbest thread I've ever read. The Ditto-heads are all piling on, thinking they know what they're talking about for once. Sorry to burst your bubble.

The idiots can tell us that climate change doesn't exist, but the evidence is so beyond overwhelming at this point, that nothing they can say will prove them right.

Less sunspots-could we be going into a cooling period. Wonder what those computor models are saying now? What does expert Al say about this? Time did predict Global Cooling back in the 70's. Maybe they were right.

The sun has had very little influence on the climate...what is far more influential are ocean currents and the ANGLE of how the sun hits the earth...just one or two degrees of a change, and one region of the world could stay cooler for years, while the southern hemisphere could stay mild for the same time, or vice versa.

Time to hit the refresh button, Daniboy. It's called "climate change" not global warming.

He was the person behind getting congress to fund the web and it still does.

Actually, what I remember is that Donald Rumsfeld made a ton of money off bird flu. At the time they said it was going to kill us all so they came up with a drug to combat it (I think it was called Tamiflu (sp?). Anyway they made all the first responders (military, fire, police) by the stuff. I think congress also got involved because a bunch of people who took Tamiflu suffered seizures and other bad reactions. The republicans covered the pharmacutical companies by passing a law where you couldn't sue a drug manufacture if it was in a time of emergency (or some other such worded silliness). Anyway, the company that made Tamiflu was called Gilliad and guess who happened to have been on the board of Gilliad. None other than Donald Rumsfeld. He had retained a bunch of stock which brought him a profit of somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 or 5 million dollars that year. After they all made their money suddenly bird flu fell totally off the radar.

More and more world scientists are coming to the conclusion that Global Warming is not a man-made problem. If this is true-will Gore have to quit selling carbon credits?

"...Global Warming is not a man-made problem..."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Not to get into the discussion of GW causes, for the umpteenth time, but I anticipated people jumping in with comments such as this. While I will agree that man may not be the "single" cause of all global warming, he IS a "contributing factor"...!!!

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that most of the temperature increase since the mid-twentieth century is "very likely" due to the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.

Global Warming is caused by many things. The causes are split up into two groups, man-made or anthropogenic causes, and natural causes.
http://library.thinkquest.org/J003411/causes.htm

Causes of Global Warming
http://www.ecobridge.org/content/g_cse.htm

Carbon Dioxide from Power Plants, Carbon Dioxide Emitted from Cars
Carbon Dioxide from Airplanes, Carbon Dioxide from Buildings
Methane, Water Vapor in the Atmosphere Increasing
Nitrous oxide, Deforestation, City Gridlock
Carbon in Atmosphere and Ocean, Permafrost

Seems to me like MANY of the above listed "causes" are directly attributable to MAN...!!!

Oh please this has happened in Las Vegas before. Remember it's elevation is 2022 ft. so at that elevation occasional snow is possible. Palmdale and Lacaster in Calif. at the other end of the Mojave are at about 2500 ft. and occasionally get snow as well.

within the scope of things, *anything* is possible. I have been in Vegas when it has snowed. this is exceptional, however, for this much snow to fall in that location & climate. but I guess since babies are born all the time, it's just not worth celebrating when someone *you* know has one?
