I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Megyn Kelly schooled Bill O'Reilly in a discussion of Washington state law on Monday night's "O'Reilly Factor."

Kelly, the host of "America's Newsroom" and a former lawyer (who has a dedicated segment, "Kelly's Court," discussing legal issues), grew increasingly frustrated as O'Reilly rejected her legal analysis, shouting, "You're wrong, Bill!"

"I've never met a non-lawyer who argues the law so confidently, albeit so wrongly," she said to O'Reilly.

The issue in question revolves around free speech at the Washington Governor, and whether atheism can be considered a religion (Kelly maintains it can, while O'Reilly equates atheist expressions to hate speech, which can be legally regulated).

Hey Bill, you want the country to be unanimously behind Christianity it's pretty simple, prove that this God fella exists, because like every religous nutjob you do not have a shred of proof; you think he does. Like millions you never just thought about the Bible and said holy s*** this is pretty f***ing stupid.

Kudos to Megyn Kelly for standing up to O'Reilly's bullying and pointing out his blatantly erroneous legal views.

However, it seems to me that Megyn missed a golden opportunity to really nail down O'Reilly's bigotry. When Bill argued that atheism is not a religion, Megyn could have replied as follows:

"You're absolutely right, Bill. Atheism IS NOT a religion. Atheism is based on reason. Religions are based on superstitions. If you don't believe so, please tell me exactly what is the difference between a faith and a superstition.

Because atheism is a viewpoint based on reason, it deserves MORE protection than any viewpoints based on superstitions. Your claim that atheists do not deserve to be heard because their speech constitutes hate speech is absolutely ridiculous, and is not supported by even one iota of evidence.

Atheists desire as much as anybody else to live happily ever after. Since they do not have any proof that living happily ever after is impossible, they have nothing against anybody who wants to live happily ever after.

They do strongly object, however, to the views of anybody who claims that the only way that s/he can ensure his/her living happily ever after requires him/her to go out of his/her way to harass them, intimidate them, and supress their freedom of speech. "

Just a matter of weeks before she's out of a job, I'd suspect. Ya can't just tell America's Daddy he's wrong. Maybe he'll send her off to time out in her room or something.

But Bill-O really is great... for use as a screening device to decide who's NOT worth knowing.

Consider:
(1) The elders of his community turned Jesus over to the Romans, for overturning the money-changers' tables, which were placed in the Temple, in violation of their Jewish custom
(2) The modern orgy of "Christmas" consumerism is an exaggeration of a tradition of celebrating the Winter Solstice, with traditions recorded thousands of years BC, in every culture with a writing system throughout North Africa, the Middle East and Mediterranean, and Europe. Gift-giving was probably attributed to the fictional "wise men" who brought gifts to mimic these traditions, not the other way around.

Is the conventional observance of "Christmas" therefore more "Christian" or more corporatist, and what is the real reason Bill O'Reilly defends it so vehemently, against a "war" nobody else can perceive?

Changing your position midstream. Like how Bill O'Liary rants about a war on Christmas, but then says Happy Holidays on his show.

"Hate speech," Bill? Really? Show me one example, if you can, of any atheists flying planes into buildings, or bombing any kind of clinics, to advance our beliefs that gods are fake. You know who commits murder and suicide for their beliefs about religion? People who DO believe that all this is illusion, and they'll be rewarded *eternally* in the afterlife, in exchange for destroying somebody's real life. And let's not hear about the communist dictators who persecuted religions, and were supposedly "atheists." They were dictators and they persecuted political opposition for the sake of their personal dictatorship, not for atheist philosophy over religious theology. The so-called "atheism" of communist and other dictators is incidental, and no correlation of violence to atheism has EVER been documented.

Bertrand Russell: "Can you prove that at this moment there is NOT a China teapot in elliptical orbit around the sun?"
Bill O'Really: "No."
B.R.: "Is it therefore reasonable to assume the existence of such a teapot?"
B.O.: "No."
B.R.: "Is it reasonable to be 'agnostic' with respect to such a teapot?"
B.O.: "No..."
B.R.: "End of argument."

So, let's stop pretending that reality-based morality is the viewpoint that by its nature tends more to be evil, or hateful, than moral systems based in mysticism.

These guys putting up atheist signs only serve to further marginalise the non-religious and make them look silly. They're falling right into the "just another religion" trap instead of throwing the burden of proof on the religious where it should be.

There is no rational, logical discourse with O'Reilly. The discourse is only there to serve his ego and conflicted perspectives contrived for party rhetoric and convenience.

Whether taken to task or not, I prefer the monitor and microphones remain ever silent and unavailable to this waste of air space.

Western religion, since the Roman Empire assimilated xianity, has been focused on empty ritual and afterlife theology as substitutes for personal liberty and justice on Earth. With the benefit of hindsight, and motivated by present-day rivalry, most Protestants at least can acknowledge the role of Roman Catholic theology as tool of political manipulation, but refuse to examine the possibility that their own theology has analogous effects or tendencies. Nobody will submit an article of their own faith to honest scrutiny.

Nevertheless, in every variation of xianity, the clergy is trained to minister to formless "souls" whereas atheists acknowledge only what is demonstrably real. When we, secular realists, think of morality and how, or whether, it operates in the world around us, we focus on the real happiness and suffering of people and relieving the latter -- and eliminating the causes of that suffering, which in turn poses an existential threat to fascism, and profiteering adherents to it like Bill O'Reilly. His dependence on suffering is well-known, though not often described as such; without incompetent white males' feelings of lost entitlement to more than they have earned in the "free market," Billo has no audience.
