NEW YORK — The Rev. Al Sharpton took Caroline Kennedy to lunch Thursday at a famed Harlem soul food restaurant as she continued her quest to join her uncle in the U.S. Senate. Kennedy smiled as she and the civil rights activist made their way through a throng of media and into Sylvia's, whose walls are lined with photographs of visiting politicians including the Clintons.

"I come at this as a mother, as a lawyer, as an author, as an education advocate and from a family that really has spent generations in public service," Kennedy told reporters after lunch. "I feel this commitment, and this is a time when nobody can afford to sit out. And I hope that I have something to offer."

The late President John F. Kennedy's daughter acknowledged Wednesday she's seeking to be appointed to the Senate seat held by Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to be secretary of state.

Kennedy was asked what she would need to do to prepare herself for the post, which has attracted the interest of at least a dozen Democratic officials including her former relative by marriage, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

"I have, you know, quite a lot to learn, but I feel like I bring a lot with me, as well," Kennedy said.

She was also asked why she was plunging into politics now, after spending most of her life carefully cultivating her privacy.

"These are issues that I care so much about and I understand that, really, I have been trying to work on them as a private citizen and in the position that I have," she said. "But really, to solve our problems, I think government is the place where people need to come together."

Kennedy's emergence as a contender has generated both buzz and controversy. She comes from a Democratic dynasty but has never held public office, and some Republicans and Democrats have criticized her lack of experience.

Democratic Gov. David Paterson has said he won't make an appointment until Clinton is confirmed. The governor confirmed Kennedy's interest in the seat on Monday, the same day she reached out to Sharpton in a telephone call.

After speaking to Kennedy, Sharpton released a statement saying he disagreed with those who say she isn't qualified to be U.S. senator.

He said he had invited her to dine wtih him at Sylvia's this week, reminding her that he took Obama there during his campaign "so it's a good luck stop since he did all right."

Call me crazy but I think Al Sharpton would be a better pick.

Does anyone really think that if Caroline Kennedy had to run for this seat, that she would not win an election? I can't see her losing.

Let's assume that every one in the Senate is an expert in politics and that's why they got there. Now look at the mess the Republic is in under the stewardship of these experts.

I rest my case.

Go for it, Caroline. You might be refreshing, and you certainly couldn't be any worse than what we've got. Any more experts and we'll be done for!

Take a look at all the "outsider" reformers under indictment. Outsider with scant record and good family connections. Who could that be? Rod Blagojovich or Caroline Kennedy.

No experience isn't a guaranteed of virtue. Virtue is resisting temptation, not the state of never having left the house.

You don't live to be 51, an heiress to both the Kennedy and the Onassis fortunes, (if there was anything willed to her)..and not meet temptation.

She's lived a very private life. The only money she's been around is her own family's money. She's never had to balance the needs of those outside of her circle against her own. How would we know what she's done? Short of being convicted in a crime or sued, how would we know of misconduct on her part?

As long as she lived a private life, her privacy was respected. We can't assume that lack of scandal is proof of character.

Caroline backers don't understand. Many of us who are offended at the thought of her inheriting this seat are Democrats. Some of us are the kind of Democrats who spent all their days off between July and October registering voters for the election. I know that I am completely sincere at the idea that all the Democratic Congresswomen for the state of New York are corrupt, so we have to have Caroline Kennedy take the senate seat as her first job.

Nita Lowey, Nydia M. Velázquez, Carolyn Mahoney all appear to be experienced and qualified and have faced the voters of New York before. What have they done that merits dismissal? I was under the impression they were honest and dedicated public servants.

...and you'd thingkthe right would be trying to bring us down...LOL...nah...they are just sitting back laughing as we do it to ourselves.
The media...I betcha...is coming here daily to see who in the democratic party we are trashing that day. WE...are giving them their material.
What dumb azzes the democrats are.
I guess Huffpo and the others just want the hits to the websites and here we are destroying ourselves to help them make money.

With the level of "Incompetence" already in the congress, one doesn't have to know a whole lot.
Working on behalf of the people of this country is one., Understanding the United States Constitution is another. Believing in "Term Limits, and "Dumping Lobbyest" completely.

Though as the saying goes her name precedes her it is not all she is. Yes she is a Kennedy and that is a benefit but she is getting more press for her name then for her achievements. Ive got three words MERITS MERITS MERITS. By these standards most conservatives would say both by his name and his achievements he is not ready to be the President but most Americans believed otherwise. President Barack Hussein Obama and NY Senator Caroline Bouvier Kennedy. Ask yourself this of those two choices which sounds more plausible? Now imagine that I asked you that question a year ago. Crazy I know.

I hope she knows that she needs to take "you know" out of her vocabulary. It is as annoying as Palin's "you betcha."

Yes, I realized after my last post and the response that as they say on the Obama blog, the Trolls are out, and they are saying Oh, My Gosh, another Kennedy. Well yes, you people, why not?

Okay, I guess I must be very confused. Since she has always been a private citizen heretofore, how could we discuss her voting record? It makes better sense to look at her work in and for the community and try to find a record of causes for which she has volunteered. All of that is probably a matter of public record. So maybe someone in the press coulddo some research and compile a report on that.

Why bother when there are candidates available who do indeed have real voting and legislative records we can scrutinize?

I don't recall seeing any suggestions that C h e l s e a should have that seat -- or any seat.
But it's true that lot of liberals don't like the K e n n e d y s -- beginning with J F K who -- when you take away the smoke and mirrors -- gave us the B a y of P i g s, the war in V i e t n a m and the C u b a n m i s s i l e crisis . B o b b y who ordered the w i r e t a p s on M L K. T e d d y, who tried to force one of his dad's subliterate cronies onto the Supreme Court, and whose personal life has been e x e c r a b e. What's to like?

Interesting . . . the article doens't mention Caroline's less than spectacular voting record.

"Records show Caroline Kennedy failed to cast her vote many times since 1988."

Eliot Spitzer is the best person for the job. Caroline should use between now and 2010 to get herself prepared for public office, then run on her own merit. Spitzer needs to be forgiven and not be treated like a paraiah just because he visited a call girl; something that most men have done. jeez.. The Hypocrazy can is simply just mind-twistingly arrogant and uncool. He has paid enough prize, let us move on.

You make me and all law abiding, right thinking people sick...!! the man has a family..are you telling us that what he did was right?? How do you forgive a man who did what he did while in
the public service...No,,Spitzer is relegated to the trash heap...

I thought he was excellent at bringing down Wall Street. He did his job. That's why he is out of a job. It's not the hooker, the hooker who supposedly hung herself..had lots of names of those still in office. If it was the prostitution Spitzer would just be one name in a long, long, list.

I'm very serious about the fact that we must begin to elect people that
care about US...and not the next election...CKS will be like all the rest...
elect me and I'll take care of you....where have we heard that for
75 years...???!!

If we don't start a movement in this country to elect people that care about
the survival of America, then we are truly doomed...

I hate to tell you but Obama is not the answer and we know Bush wasn't..
somehow, someway, we must break away from the political establishment,
and find new answers...How do we do that? I don';t know...

Your comment is the best I've read here, ever. How do we do that?

We can't. Sadly, it's too late for the great experiment that was the United States.

Ruined by politicians who sold this country down the toilet for votes .... disgusting.

For bribes from the money men. All for the money.

They are selling us into slavery to the money people. That was what the bailout was all about.
