One of the biggest strains for people who've been laid off in recent months is explaining -- with Christmas music playing in the background -- what happened to the old job. Bad layoff jokes, uneven gift exchanges and tense small talk with the in-laws are just a few of the social challenges facing the jobless.

Dear Elizabeth: yes, there really are bad politicians who want to see your Daddy laid off. They are called Southern Republicans. Fortuneately there will soon be a large Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate, and with the cooperation of a few Northern Republicans, it may be possible to save your parents' jobs. Let's hope so.

Whatever you do, don't talk about the "Good Ole Days." When my grandpa talks about how he retired at 50 years old, it brings tears to my eyes. And they are not tears of joy. They are tears of fear, for the entire middle class. No pensions. No jobs. No health insurance? What kind of 3rd world country is this??

The Republicans want the UAW to become like the non-union workers. That is idiotic. The ultimate in non-union working conditions is China; no social security, no retirement, no healthcare, no unemployment insurance, no rules governing worker or consumer safety concerns...............is that really what we want for America?

It makes more sense to require the non-union auto makers in America to treat their workers better, than to require Detroit to treat their workers worse. The end result of Republican logic is to recreate Chinese working conditions here in America, like we used to have back in the 19th century. Thanks, but no thanks.
