High-ranking officials with Barack Obama's transition team met for roughly two-and-a-half hours with a wide range of Jewish groups that encompassed nearly the entire ideological spectrum.

The meeting, which involved 29 organizations ranging from hawkish (Zionist Organization of America and, to a lesser extent, AIPAC) and conservative (the Orthodox Union) to Democratic (the National Jewish Democratic Council) and progressive (J Street, Peace Now), took place in the transition's Washington D.C. office on Thursday afternoon.

Reflecting the variety of viewpoints at the table, a host of foreign policy and domestic topics were raised for discussion. Disagreements between the groups were aired before the Obama officials, which included deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, public liaison Michael Strautmanis, Jewish outreach coordinator Dan Shapiro, and aides Tonya Robinson and Eric Lynn.

On several occasions, the Obama team was pressed to define the president-elect's position on a paramount issue to Jewish groups: U.S. policy towards Iran.

"They assured us, as the vice president-elect has said, that the Iran/nuclear issue is one of the things at the very top of the agenda," said an attendee. "They repeated the idea that we should be focusing on it diplomatically and not just militarily. Some of the more right-wing groups were saying that it can't be carrots and no sticks, that we are running out of time.... The Obama team said [in response] that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons is an issue that the president-elect, as he's made clear during and after the election, considers a primary concern. It is not something that will fall off the radar."

Participants in the meeting, which was first reported by Politico's Ben Smith, also addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "Pretty much everybody in there but a handful of people were for a two-state solution," said an attendee. Obama's positions on energy and health care received attention as well.

"On domestic issues, except for some of the orthodox groups, it sounded like a cheerleading session for the transition team's format," said the source.

What stood out, above all else, was not any particular policy statements, but rather the gathering of such ideologically disparate groups under one roof. The meeting, the attendee noted, was very much in line with the Obama campaign's stated mission to listen to a whole host of opinions when it comes to formulating foreign policy.

"The fact that they took time to do this," said the source, "and that they did this with senior transition people, was deeply appreciated."

Israeli lobbyists are on the wane. Let's hope we make no commitments beyond their utility.

Israel has nuclear weapons. How come no one mentions it and only talks about Iran's *desire* to acquire some? Why the "double standard"????
What about Gaza? it's a ghetto , people there are suffering thanks to the Zionists. How come no one react to that? How come Obama 's team have discussions only with the Jews and not with the Arabs???? Why are the Jews so feared and so important? I do not understand......

The people in Gaza are suffering because the Palestinian leadership uses them as pawns to garner sympathy for their cause which is eventually controlling all of Israel. If the Palestinians were to stop suicide bombings and other attacks on Israel they would be able to live in peace. If the Israeli's were to lay down their arms the Palestinians would continue attacking Israel.

That is the fundamental difference.

Oh yes. Because Hamas is living high on the hog. Not like those poor sods in Tel Aviv, with their skyscrapers and high rises and seaside resorts.

"Jewish Groups Convene For Rare Obama Transition Meeting"

Well, I'm not sure if you write your own headlines, Sam, (I'm guessing you don't) but this is one headline I am in 100% agreement.

Indeed this will be a "rare Obama transition".

Probably the only one in his lifetime.

Millions of people are suffering here in the United States and Israel is the talking point? I am sick and tired of the level of attention Israel gets year after year when in fact our whole country is under water.

Iran is a treat to every country in the Middle East because of what we don't know if they have nuclear bomb. What the US Administration ought to do is If Israel wants US to forcefully resolve Iran solution then the US must enforce that they should make peace with Palestine (stop the expansion of the settlement, allow economical development for the people of Palestine, don't control their water, food, medicine, etc, don't make them prisoners within their own territory). Of course, the Palestinians also have to step up to stop suicide bombing and the like kind of practices that terrorize the people of Israel. If you can’t do well to others then you don’t deserve any good from the US should be the message to those meeting Obama's transtion team!

Mr. President-Elect, save this country first and then the rest.

Albert Einstein is exactly right, as all educated and unbiased people should acknowledge. Who knows what is in the genetic heritage of any one of us?
America must begin acting in a wiser fashion when it comes to its relationship with the nations of the world. We must acknowledge that both Israel and Palestine have suffered from bad leadership and do all in our power to encourage sanity in their respective governments, as in our own.

You can hope...... but before you go on hoping, remember the very first appointement of Obama's team: Rahm Emmanuel , a Zionist who fought in the Israeli army.

I thought our great country is a melting pot for all nationalities. Why is it that the Jewish organizations have the reign over so many of our leaders? They have to control everything. That is their nature. There will always be wars as long as they are in charge. I hope Obama will do what is right for the majority and not cave in to a handful of greedy lobbyists. We are becoming a third world country because of GREED. Let's start following the example of The Greatest Teacher ever, Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God.

I agree Stokes - Jesus Christ was the "prince of peace"

I see American foreign policy a contradiction of the "prince of peace's" teachings.

Something for Crristians to think about.

I am a christian (small letter c) and have been all my life... in fact a member of the UCC Congregational Church (very liberal) and I have been sending donations to J Street which is
a very liberal group who is opposite to AIPAC. They believe in peace and are against the
settlements on Palestinian land etc. We need to support those groups that support our
values, no matter what they are.

So I assume you are following the example of jesus when you characterize Jews as greedy, war mongers, bent on controlling the world?

Teach on jesus.
