LAS VEGAS — Flights resumed in and out of Las Vegas, but schools and highways were closed Thursday after a record-setting snowfall coated marquees on the Strip, weighed down palm trees and blanketed surrounding mountain areas. The city awoke to clear weather after a storm that left 3.6 inches at McCarran International Airport. It was biggest December snowfall on record there, and the worst for any month since a 7 1/2-inch accumulation in January 1979, forecasters said.

The storm Wednesday and early Thursday also dumped snow or rain and snarled travel in other parts of Nevada, much of southern California and parts of northern Arizona.

"It looks like Whoville, all snowy, but with less joy and more extreme misery," said Calen Weiss, 19, who was stuck Wednesday when snow in the Cajon Pass east of Los Angeles disrupted travel on Interstate 15.

Cajon Pass and another leg of Interstate 15 near the Nevada line both reopened by midday Thursday, while Interstate 5, the major route between Northern and Southern California, partially reopened.

In Washington state, Seattle got a rare 4-inch accumulation, and the 19.4 inches of snow that piled up at Spokane International Airport smashed the 24-hour record total of 13 inches set in 1950. And snow continued to fall.

Spokane declared a "Condition Red" snow emergency, meaning crews will work around the clock until they complete a full city plow.

For Las Vegas, the storm left heavy wet accumulations of snow along the famed Strip. At least one carport toppled under the accumulated weight, authorities said, and motorists in Henderson parked their cars and walked home when tires spun as they tried to navigate slippery uphill climbs.

Thursday was the first snow day for Clark County schools since the 1979 storm, district spokesman Michael Rodriguez said.

Airlines resumed flights Thursday after canceling dozens of them late Wednesday, McCarran airport spokesman Jerry Pascual said.

"Visibility has lifted. The outlook for the day is much better," Pascual said as the sun rose Thursday. Pascual said just one flight had gotten out overnight and stranded travelers were forced to sleep on lounge seats and floors at the nation's sixth-busiest airport.

In Arizona, snow was widespread in the state's higher elevations, with 24-hour accumulations reaching 10 inches in Flagstaff by daybreak. By 10 a.m. Thursday, official weather service measurements had 18 inches of snow on the ground in Flagstaff.

Authorities said major highways were open but advised drivers to be careful of packed snow and ice.

In western Washington, the Seattle School District had been mocked by some for closing schools Wednesday with just a threat of snow. The threat became a reality Thursday, and 4 inches of snow by midday left many drivers spinning their wheels on slippery roads.

The National Weather Service said the city even had an episode of "thundersnow" when a storm cell moved across Puget Sound.

Rachel Bjork, 36, waited in vain for a downtown bus at a stop in north Seattle as four outbound buses passed.

"I'm getting a little annoyed. It's cold," Bjork said. "I would suspect there's probably going to be four people at work. Usually there's 30."

In Kitsap County, across Puget Sound from Seattle, authorities said freezing weather may have claimed the life of a 36-year-old man who wandered from his house wearing only light clothing. Deputies said he had been ill and there was no evidence of foul play.

Even Malibu, Calif., got a dusting of snow Wednesday, as the usually balmy city saw a half-inch in the afternoon.

"It's kind of cool if you think about it, said Craig Levy, director of a juvenile detention camp. "It's kind of unusual to see snow in Malibu."

I do confess to being curious.

Is all this snow and bitter cold evidence that we have now tipped to the point of actually starting another ice age? Al Gore even "borrowed" scenes from The Day After Tomorrow, so perhaps it's happening right now (just not as fast as it happened in the movie.. after all, they did have to squeeze it into two hours).

Has someone checked on the gulf stream lately????

Do you think it will stop the encroaching pythons?

"As climate change warms the nation, giant Burmese pythons could colonize one-third of the USA, from San Francisco across the Southwest, Texas and the South and up north along the Virginia coast, according to U.S. Geological Survey maps released Wednesday. "

3.6 inches is a dusting here in Chicago.
In fact, we're seeing the beginnings of that same storm aided by Gulf moisture, and are expecting 10 to 12 inches by noon tomorrow.

There was 8 - 10 inches in our part of town. No snow plows, salt, sand - nothing on the roads up the hill to my house. It took me 6 hours to get home from work (normally a 25 minute trip). Those with 4- or All-wheel drive or snow chains were looking good, the rest of us muddled through the best we could - or got stuck.

Snow is not fun when you live in an area that by all accounts, should not see measurable snow. It may not seem like much to people living in cities where snow is the winter norm - but these few inches had quite an impact to a city unprepared for a white Christmas.

Due to over whelming number of record lows all over the world, al Gore has cancelled Global Warming and Climate Change until further notice.

Because of his added heating bills and the high cost of jet fuel this summer, he will not be refunding any donations at this time.

Thank you all for supporting the GW and CC world tour 08 - we will be working hard on a new man made natural disaster this winter.

Fascinating. Perhaps NOAA was using the same kind of random "making it up as he goes" approach as Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Al Gore's chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen.

It's so cute when someone spouts their "observable" evidence in an attempt to debunk established scientific evidence and consensus when that evidence actually supports the concept they're trying to debunk!

Once one understands how global warming works and the effects it has on local weather, one understands that global warming, while there is an overall long-term global warming trend, also creates extremes in weather and temperature - meaning bigger storms, colder cold, warmer warm, more precipitation, more and longer droughts. So, while 3.6" of snow in Vegas is a one-time event and could have happened in a completely stable environment, added to the list of other "unique" weather events it becomes more evidence in support of global warming.

Meteorology is very complex and a difficult degree to achieve, and the global warming concept is highly complex and difficult for even meteorologists to completely grasp. It then makes sense that it is so misunderstood by the general public, much like physics and biology.

"Meteorology is very complex and a difficult degree to achieve, and the global warming concept is highly complex and difficult for even meteorologists to completely grasp."

Are you trying to supportyour statement about "established ... evidence" and "consensus" or undermine it?

Even Albert Einstein wasn't so arrogant as to declare the scientific debates about laws of physics to ever be "settled". I would love to see a global warming alarmist (which I'm guessing you are) to admit that there's at least some probability greater than zero that they may be wrong.

Poor Las Vegas! 3 and 1/2 inches of snow and everything comes to a halt. I live in Northern Michigan and we've had about 77 inches of snow already and it's not even winter yet. I've shoveled off my roof as many times as they have seen snow. By the way, tomorrow we're supposed to get 2-4 inches more. Merry Christmas one and all!

The cold temperature in Vegas that caused the snow is unusual. Vegas winters are pretty mild.

Did you know that if the temp gets too low it is too cold to snow?

You seem confused.

Or are you just a knee jerk climate change denying wingnut who comes to a liberal blog site to make an arse of himself?

Yes, he is confused, but he is indicating in his post that simply having snow does not debunk global warming. You are a fool for reading his point incorrectly. DimLib.

The people that are arse's are the ones that believe that man is causing global warming, even though the earth has cooled the last 10-15 years.

The biggest problem is that earth has naturally had dramatic climate changes in the past, and we don't have a good handle on what caused the changes, except that it wasn't man.

The ignorance spewed by climate crisis deniers is absolutely amazing.
You Flat Earthers need to take some geology, meteorology and biology classes....and put the Right Wing Wacko Flavored Kool-Aid down.
Quickly.
Here in Vegas it snowed down in the valley, which includes The Strip...where it pretty much never gets cold enough for snowfall or for snow to "stick".
We get snow in the mountains...usually.
This was an unusual occurence that was even more extreme outside of the city.
3.6 inches IN VEGAS proper.
12" out in the Northern desert region.
Grow up you Flat Earthers.

Man can't change the earth's climate, all he can do is adapt to the changes that occur naturally.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:09 PM on 12/18/2008

Explain WHY man can't change the climate please.

Didn't man create the automobiles and factories that produce the carbon dioxide?
we KNOW, scientifically, the result of excess amounts of that.

Ergo....man CAN...
He DOES have the ability.

Why do you refuse reality? What's in it for you?

I'm all for reducing pollution in all forms -- not just carbon emissions.

But let's do it in a way that won't further bankrupt an already bankrupt country (ours.)

Huge tax increases on coal plants and fossil fuels will only get passed on to -- you guessed it -- the consumer. Leading us further down the path to a full-blown depression . . . . .
