Plastic Surgery

The New York Times reports that plastic surgery is on the decline...especially in regions where it's most enjoyed.

"In Orange County, where plastic surgery is a part of their culture, doctors told me business is down 30 to 40 percent," said Thomas Seery, the president of realself.com, a site devoted to reviewing vanity-medicine procedures. "That tells me something is fundamentally changing there."

Even a few celebrities, those early adopters of appearance technology, have started to deride the plasticized look that sometimes accompanies cosmetic interventions, a harbinger perhaps of a new climate of restraint in which overt augmentation seems like bad taste.

Call it a Botox backlash. Last month in interviews with different magazines, the actresses Courteney Cox and Lisa Rinna said that they did not like the look of excessive facial injections.

Breast augmentation should be illegal except in the case of disfigurement due to injury or disease. Putting water filled balloons inside of peoples chests is abhorrent... it not only looks fake, but it's a real turn off for anyone in touch with the true beauty of our natural form. I have always wondered how a perfectly beautiful woman would want to disfigure herself with balloons.... it's disgusting and boggles my natural mind.

I knew there would be a good side to this recession/depression.

Breast augmentation is the stupidest aspect of human existance. Any woman (excepting deformities or breast cancer survivors) who thinks this surgery will make them look better or help their "self esteem", and any man who likes fakey looking boobs because they're bigger, can not understand the poetry and power of beauty.

One thing that has always puzzled me is what do they do when they get older and fatter, and the breasts just naturally get larger? And how do they handle the breast cancer issue?

You actually make an excellent point: The implants may disguise an early lump especially one at the side and under the implant, and potentially may be too late by the time it becomes palpable. The implant may also sometimes disduise an early lump on XRay. This is a good reason not to have implants., which also cause a capsule of compressed breast tissue around the implant (it's a foreign body) and this can sometimes be hardened and even lumpy making cancer diagnosis difficult.

This is promising news...we gotta love ourselves and each other the way we are. Maybe we are awakening from our narcissistic nightmare.

I'd consider the surgery but if I had the money and for a limited number of reasons. Enlargement isn't one of 'em. I got more than enough via food additives and whatnot.

When will women stop buying into the idea that they should look like plastic Barbie dolls? I can see if you have a mastectomy, or have been injured in a car wreck or something. But the women I know I know did it because a friend had had it done, or because their man wanted them to. Shallow.
