Warren

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), one of only three openly gay members of the House of Representatives, released a statement harshly criticizing Barack Obama's decision to have Rev. Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his inauguration:

"I am very disappointed by President-elect Barack Obama's decision to honor Reverend Rick Warren with a prominent role in his inauguration. Religious leaders obviously have every right to speak out in opposition to anti-discrimination measures, even in the degrading terms that Rev. Warren has used with regard to same-sex marriage. But that does not confer upon them the right to a place of honor in the inauguration ceremony of a president whose stated commitment to LGBT rights won him the strong support of the great majority of those who support that cause.

"It is irrelevant that Rev. Warren invited Senator Obama to address his congregation, since he extended an equal invitation to Senator McCain. Furthermore, the President-Elect has not simply invited Rev. Warren to give a speech as part of a series in which various views are presented. The selection of a member of the clergy to occupy this uniquely elevated position has always been considered a mark of respect and approval by those who are being inaugurated."

And Joe Solmonese, the president of Human Rights Watch, wrote in the Washington Post Friday about his own disappointment:

It is difficult to comprehend how our president-elect, who has been so spot on in nearly every political move and gesture, could fail to grasp the symbolism of inviting an anti-gay theologian to deliver his inaugural invocation. And the Obama campaign's response to the anger about this decision? Hey, we're also bringing a gay marching band. You know how the gays love a parade.

Yes, the Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of the humongous, evangelical Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif., has a sound message on poverty. And certainly, in the world of politics, there is a view that Barack Obama owes Warren for bringing him before fellow evangelicals, despite fierce opposition during the heat of the presidential campaign.

But here's the other thing about Warren, the author of the bestselling book "The Purpose Driven Life": He was a general in the campaign to pass California's Proposition 8, which dissolved the legal marriage rights of loving, committed same-sex couples.

For that reason, inviting Warren to set the tone at the dawn of this new presidency sends a chilling message to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. It makes us uncertain about this exciting, young president-elect who has said repeatedly that we are part of his America, too.

If Obama thinks that the GLBT community has not evolved since the days of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” then he is going to soon learn a big lesson by the more than 30 million GLBT people and their supporters. We are not afraid to be asked and we are not afraid to tell! Those days are over…!

Indeed. I think Obama is still vastly underestimating the backlash this is having. Obama's words were hopeful and promising... but ultimately, actions (and choices, notably) speak louder than words.

Blurring Obama's position with that of Warren on GLBT, how is that helpful? Obama is a supporter and defender of GLBT, engagement and dialog is the way to get through to the antigay Warrens and a whole 40-60% of other ignorant Americans.

There is a GLBT parade on the presidential inauguration, for the first time in history, an opportunity to let Warren know exactly why he is wrong.

Wait until you can't live freely in your own country before you pass judgment.Walk a mile in my shoes...the Jews would be a bit upset if Hitler was to be part of the inauguration ceremony. Warren has absolutely no basis to have an actively negative campaign None. You ought to think before you post.

What really matters is what and how P.E. Obama feels about gay rights and issues. I really think people are making a big stank about nothing. If you really paid attention to Obama's message during his campaign then a lot of you would understand why this isn't a big deal for him. Do any of you remember the words "disagreeing without being disagreeable" or "putting aside petty differences". It has to start somewhere people and the first step is always difficult. Let's have some faith in P.E. Obama, and give him a chance.

Why doesn't Fank do something constructive and figure out how Paulson played him for $800 Billion.
As he sits and hines about a perceived insult, the people he supposedly serves need help. Real help. This so-called abandoned gay insult is silly. Warren is just another pastor. What difference does it make that he doesn't agree with the homosexual lifestyle. Who cares. They'll do what they want anyway. It's not going to matter if they trott out Rosie and Ellen. It's not Obamas opinion and just because someones opinion is different than the homosexual community it doesn't give them the right to strong arm their way to what they want. Frank should concentrate on what happened to the bailout money and why no homeowners were helped. The problem with the homosexual community is they spend too much time seeking approval. They should lobby to change and top the "my rights are being violated " song.

Frank /is/ concentrating on the bailout issues, if you'd bother to seek out some news on what's going on. He's been one of the few, clear voices of reason in the Congress for dealing with this crisis. Don't believe me? Go watch some recent reruns of the Rachel Maddow Show in which he was a guest.

Frank was one of the point people in passing the TARP Bill with haste. Now it turns out that Paulson has handed out $350B to his friends and wants the other $350B to continue rewarding the good old boys. None of the money has gone towards the purposes we were promised needed assistance. I'm reminded of the assurances that there were WMD's to legalize a war that goes on today.

If Barney is the best we can get to fix the problem, we're in deep trouble. Tell me what he has done that has improved our escape from the economic crisis. Merely being gay and on the Maddow show doesn't give him a passing grade. Perhaps he can spend more time and produce better results in the future if he spent more time dealing with the economy than with Warren.

Speaking of Rachel Maddow, her silence on this issue has been deafening. I guess she's so glad to have gotten her own show she's going to be a good little girl.

In selecting Warren, Obama has managed to both reach out to the religious right and rekindle a new debate over LGBT rights. And the cost? Giving Warren 5 minutes in the spotlight. Prop 8 had gone off the mainstream political radar since the election due to other issues like the economy/Iraq. Now LGBT rights are front and center, and this announcement gave Obama another opportunity to reassert his support for them. Sure, the decision was disrespectful to the gay community and its supporters. But in terms of securing RIGHTS for gays, which are the prerequisites for real respect, Obama may have made a good decision. And until he gets into office and ignores his campaign promises, I plan on giving him the benefit of the doubt and not getting caught up in the pre-presidential symbolism, honor, and posturing.

Let the air out of the balloons. Calm down. Warren and Obamas opions aren't the same.did you ever disagreed with someone but participated anyway? Probably not. But, it's just a speech, stop making everything a stage act. Prop 8 as everything else will change. Relax, wait, help more people to understand the other ulternatives for their lives and everyone will get what they want. Pointing the finger at Obama for making a choice that supposedly insults every homosexual is ignorant. You know Obamas stand on the issue. If you didn't you would not have voted for him.

Calm down, why the chaos. Why does everything have to turn to bruised feelings. You know Obama doesn't pal around with anyone. Can't we just stop pouting like children for a moment and be happy to be involved in this very historic time in our country. No ones trying to isolate anyone and as far as I ever observed homosexuals are caring, kind, intelligent people. On the other side of the coin the KKK are arguing that no African American Pastor,.should be involved in any ceremony regarding anything in the White House, it's pathetic. It's not a white America, It's not a Black America, It's not a Homosexual America,. It's not a KKK America, it's the United States of America.
Know that!

i posted a day or two ago defending Obama's pick because i thought it was a great example of reaching out to the opposite side.

I watched Maddow, Olbermann and others... read a bit more about what Warren thinks/says about gays and the gay lifestyle, how gayness means evolution isn't real...

I can't defend it any more.

This was a horrible pick. I hope he changes his mind an un-invites Warren.

This was a mistake by Obama.

As far as incomprehensible and inexplicable decisions go, President-elect Obama's choice of Rick Warren to invoke God's blessing on his presidency, and the nation's future, ranks right up there with McCain's vp selection of Sarah Palin in terms of allowing political calculation to override common sense and good judgment.

If Obama really wanted to suck up to the "religulous" rightwing hatermongers and alienate millions of his own supporters in the process, he could just as well have just chosen Sarah Palin's witchdoctor, who would gladly set about the task of banishing all the evil gay spirits from the village.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:52 PM on 12/19/2008

You know, I don't like Warren and I certainly disagree with him to a great degree (I'm a gay left-wing Democrat) but this is an absurd comparison. Palin was chosen to run for an office of incredible importance and power, Warren is being asked to speak for a few minutes at the inauguration. Yes, Obama could of (and probably should have) chosen someone less divisive, but Warren's speaking won't have even the slightest effect on policy. And, on the plus side, this is a way of reaching out to those evangelicals who Warren represents which have become more supportive of approaches to combat poverty and global warming, the most important issues of our time. If this small gesture can help gain right-wing support for anti-poverty and anti-global warming issues, then its well worth it.

Congressman Frank, I would love to see Pastor Warren share the stage at the inauguration with the Right Reverend V. Gene Robinson, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. Since the Rt. Rev. Robinson is the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, an invitation to him would provide some needed balance.

Very simple. This entire issue is solely of Obama's making. And he chose to create the issue. There was no call from the gay community for Obama to choose someone to deliver a prayer in support of gay people, in support of gay marriage or gay rights. None.

He chose an active leader of the Prop 8 forces, someone who equates being gay with incest and beastiality, and who is known for those positions. The fact that Warren supports other commonly perceived "good" causes --- AIDS education, anti-poverty efforts, etc. --- doesn't negate his homophobia.

It strains credulity that Obama and his team --- who ran one of the smartest, savviest campaigns in recent history --- didn't see that selecting homophobe Warren would cause a controversy.

If so, "Why choose Warren?" Answer: Send a message to homophobes that Obama's not THAT liberal. Gays, despite their support, are more easily sacrificed; besides Obama's thinking must go, "Where else are the gays going to go other than on my side, who else are they going to support?"

Obama knew it would cause a stir. He chose to cause the stir. It sends a message to right-of-center people that he's not the leftie they think he is, because, "See, just like you, I don't have that big a problem with homophobes, even if I don't consider myself one, even if I disagree with them." Pretty cynical for a "uniter" guy...political cynicism worthy of ..... George W. Bush.

Why is the gay community so determined to undertake such a losing PR campaign in support of what is beginning to feel more and more like a trendy desire to get married — when I was in college less than 10 years ago, my LGBT brothers and sisters used to mock us as "breeders" and such — than a real desire for societal change, which is what we need? Everyone knows civil unions are in effect the same, and the notion that they're not is the Great Lie of this debate. So are we really going to divide our political coalition over semantics, now? A month in? Since the predominantly white gay community, which has shown a lot of racism since Nov. 4, is so desperate to be the new black, let me tell you a little something as a black woman: Change is a lot harder-fought than a single election cycle, and if you really believe that skin color discrimination is even remotely comparable to what most of the civilized world has considered a grave sin since the beginning of time, then all that bathhouse steam is going to your brain. African-Americans fought for freedom for CENTURIES. Maybe all those years with drag queens and leather guys on parade floats should have been spent on achieving political and social equality. It was all about sexual freedom for so long, and now every gay couple wants a white picket fence, two kids and a dog? Please.

You are incorrect to state that civil unions are in effect the same, they are not. When you file a tax return and you are in a civil union you cannot file married jointly, thereby forcing gay couples in civil unions to pay more in taxes. My husband and I were married in a civil union over twenty years ago, but because we are heterosexual we can claim "married" thereby allowing us to file jointly. Also, when one partner of a gay civil union dies their remaining partner does not get the benefit of their social security or medicare. Must I go on? Did you not know this? Civil unions are great when they are equal and until they are this march for equality for gay couples will continue. Personally I think we should do what England does. Everyone should be required to become legally bound in a civil union and then if they want to get "married" they can have a church ceremony. It's a pipe dream, I know. Not sure if this government will ever be up to the task but the LGBT community better be ready to fight like hell.

You say African Americans fought for freedom for CENTURIES. Do you think there were no gay people then? They didn't fight for freedom because they feared for their lives. So they hid and stayed in the closet. And as far as drag queens and leather guys on parade floats, you act as if it's impossible to have fun while simultaneously fighting for equality.
