Warren

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), one of only three openly gay members of the House of Representatives, released a statement harshly criticizing Barack Obama's decision to have Rev. Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his inauguration:

"I am very disappointed by President-elect Barack Obama's decision to honor Reverend Rick Warren with a prominent role in his inauguration. Religious leaders obviously have every right to speak out in opposition to anti-discrimination measures, even in the degrading terms that Rev. Warren has used with regard to same-sex marriage. But that does not confer upon them the right to a place of honor in the inauguration ceremony of a president whose stated commitment to LGBT rights won him the strong support of the great majority of those who support that cause.

"It is irrelevant that Rev. Warren invited Senator Obama to address his congregation, since he extended an equal invitation to Senator McCain. Furthermore, the President-Elect has not simply invited Rev. Warren to give a speech as part of a series in which various views are presented. The selection of a member of the clergy to occupy this uniquely elevated position has always been considered a mark of respect and approval by those who are being inaugurated."

And Joe Solmonese, the president of Human Rights Watch, wrote in the Washington Post Friday about his own disappointment:

It is difficult to comprehend how our president-elect, who has been so spot on in nearly every political move and gesture, could fail to grasp the symbolism of inviting an anti-gay theologian to deliver his inaugural invocation. And the Obama campaign's response to the anger about this decision? Hey, we're also bringing a gay marching band. You know how the gays love a parade.

Yes, the Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of the humongous, evangelical Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif., has a sound message on poverty. And certainly, in the world of politics, there is a view that Barack Obama owes Warren for bringing him before fellow evangelicals, despite fierce opposition during the heat of the presidential campaign.

But here's the other thing about Warren, the author of the bestselling book "The Purpose Driven Life": He was a general in the campaign to pass California's Proposition 8, which dissolved the legal marriage rights of loving, committed same-sex couples.

For that reason, inviting Warren to set the tone at the dawn of this new presidency sends a chilling message to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. It makes us uncertain about this exciting, young president-elect who has said repeatedly that we are part of his America, too.

The last time I saw this clown he was congratulating himself and other members in congress about the bailout that was suppose to help the middle class. How is that going Barney? Frank alone with pelosi and reid are about as useful as a used t am. pon. Our economy is tanking , our children are dying in this illegal occupation and the rest of the world hate us and this is what we are focusing on? Please, put this in perspective. So what, this shrub does the invocation, I don't like it, personally I think the world would be better place without scared little people like warren hiding his hatred behind a bi ble. I think Obama is a smart man and I choose to trust him. I may not agree with all his decisions, but I trust him. The way people are reacting to this nonsense is unbelievable, you all deserve bush/chaney mob because you are too self-absorbed to put this in perspective I understand that this is hurtful but he is doing exactly what he said he would do, and that is reach across the isle, translation, talk to a$$.hol es. I hate that this scum is given this honor, he doesn't deserves it. If America falls it isn't due to bush alone, it is due to the stu.pi dity(the 26% that still think bush is a good president) and shortsightedness of the American people.

Go suck your thumb. Most of you don't pray anyways. Obama is not the president to the gays, blacks, hispanics, women, men,.................... he's the president of the USA. Stop with the crap and get over yourself, because those folks voted for him also.

Why do we, as liberals, think we have to just accept this situation? Just because he is a Democrat!!

We need to organize and boycot the inauguration.

This is a no win situation, if Warren is removed from the program, we're blamed, and if he stays, it's a thumb in your eye.

Just find something else to do on that day.

I won't be listening to his speech, I've heard enough.

Boycott the inauguration would be a Catastrophic mistake. This is a historic event for the other people who supported Obama. That kind of behavior will never be forgotten by the rest of his supporters. The very last thing you need is to cause permanent divide between his supporters who you will need to accomplish your valid dream.

That's ridiculous! Is that all you can come up with? How about deciding to pick your battles? Obama is not going to be able to make all your dreams come true. Try something other than a knee jerk reaction and you will get more respect for it.

Boycotting the inauguration might not be a good idea. How about boycotting Warren's prayer and only listening to Lowry??

Simple solution, take your righteous anger and vote for Palin in 2012. Have every boycott any Palin event, because I am sure you will be accepted in real american.

Honestly, did the gay community stand a better chance with McCain and Palin? It is better to work with Obama on this issue because you don't want to jeopardize any achievements that can be made. If there is one person right now that can get people to change their mind it is Obama. Remember, a lot of people believe he would never be president .

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:54 PM on 12/19/2008

Obama has tipped his hand with the choice of Warren that he has no intention of getting anyone to change their mind. He has forfeited the high ground on Civil Rights.
This is a slap in the face not only to gay Americans, but all Americans.
Obama picked an unrepentant bigot and elevated him.
Shame on him.

Then what you should is vote for Palin in 2012, because you know where she stand. P.S good luck. I am sure Rush and Hannity we please to know they converted former Obama supporter.

I can't stand Rick Warren or his fake rich congregation at Saddleback Church. His responses to Prop 8 and some of the things he has said are totally inappropriate and immature. However, I do not consider it a slap in the face as an Obama supporter to have Warren give the invocation. Frankly I could care less from a religious standpoint maybe because I don't believe in organized religion. The LGBT community needs to let this go and re-group. Find a better solution to combat the religious bigots like Rick Warren. Trust me the only way to do it is through the pocket book.

I guess that if you are anti-reparations you are a bigot against black Americans too. So if any group has a demand you disagree with, they are bigots, right?

I am a long time liberal Democrat, and I like John Kerry do NOT support gay marriage since it is NOT a "right" in any law or tradition in the US. Marriage is a legal contract and preference the state grants for its own benefit as well as that of the individual. Those who think that they have no reciprocal obligation along with grants such as marriage or even citizenship, should join the Libertarian Party. Gay marriage and its proponents have more in common with the Libertarian right wing than the left.

Nice try, if true , you must be the dumbest liberal democrat in the country if you really believe that marriage is not defined as a "right". Take a look at the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution for starters, then go read the court judgments in Mass. and CA in favor of gay marriage and defining it as a civil right.
Your ignorance of how our society works is astounding.

Well if it's not a right and is a legal contract as you state then why can't gays have the same legal contract? Don't tell me civil unions are the same because so far they are not, all you have to do is look at how we file taxes to see that. The government needs to improve on civil unions. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think that everyone wanting to be legally conjoined should do so with a civil union and if they want to be "married" they can have a religious ceremony.

Marriage is a state of mind. If you spend all your time and thoughts on a person then you are married. Please get real and don't bog the system down with this diversion.

I do feel for those who are flamboyant with their life style in that they will be ridiculed openly and or in private. Also, I have some wierd traits that I must not allow in public in that they may end be up in jail.

Also, please do not equate this (gay rights) with persons of color having had maltreatment due to slavery and or the superiority mindset of folks.

I agree with someone who said their should be a seperation of church and state as much as possible. Yet the histroy and culture of this country does not allow a pure seperation. Heaven will heal all earthly wounds.

We have separation of Church & State. Therefore there should be no religious invocation whatsoever at the inauguration of the President or any other political level.

I agree, but I think that should be up to each president. If they are spiritual let them have the invocation the way they want it. If there were ever an atheist president then he/she should be allowed to conduct it however he/she wants as well.

Is heterosexuality a "lifestyle" or is it just a life? Think about it or don't and remain a clueless homophobe.

While you ponder that, take a moment to re-think your half-baked idea that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are solely responsible for the entire collapse of the American economy. It's a very silly notion and, of course, a complete fabrication.

Freddie and Fannie aren't what did it. over 80% of the sub primes were from privet firms.

When the tech bubble burst a housing bubble was created, and the tax breaks for the rich straddled us with even higher debt.

Social programs, infrastructure, and higher education investments would have been sustainable economic policies.

Oh, you may not be afraid of homosexuals, but you do have an irrational hatred of us.

Obama obviously made a mistake here. However, it is upsetting that many people are quick to say that he is completely abandoning the LGBT community. Though he made a bad pick, Obama's motives here are not for political gain, I think they are an attempt to bring unity in a time of economic and environmental troubles, which cannot be solved by a polarized nation. The pick of Warren, though highly disappointing, is NOT an indication of Obama's policies regarding gay rights. Being cynical and polarized in these times is the last thing we want as a nation that has been metaphorically water-boarded by a despicable administration over the last eight years. I feel we need to let Obama know he has made a mistake, but abandoning Obama's historic cause to heal this nation after a long and painful Bush presidency is counterproductive and would likely hurt the LGBT cause in the long run.

With thoughts like that your sure to be in for a let down at every turn. I didn't vote for Obama and give him what meager savings I could muster for two years because I thought he was going to be my answer to salvation for pity's sake! I gave him my support because he was a better candidate and a person who was a thinker. Someone who sees the world in shades of gray instead of black and white ideology of the far right. Please remember why you voted for him and don't forget it.

I wish the articles would stop saying it upsets the LGBT community and neglect the rest of us who support gay marriage, and despise what Obama has done with Warren. We are a huge group and we need to let the nation know there is a lot of support for gay marriage and civil rights outside of the LGBT community. I say it as often as I can because I think it is important to put this in perspective and context. Warren is offensive to so very many people.

Agreed. We are a huge group and we're not all members of the GLBT community. It's easier for them to marginalize the anger against this Obama decision by pretending that only gay people care about it and gay people don't matter. They'll have to re-think that because not every Democrat is a homophobe and we are not going anywhere.

It's also worth noting, although nobody seems to care, that Pastor Rick is an anti-choice activist and an anti-science activist. Evidently these are no longer core principles of the Democratic Party.

So how many anti-Democratic strikes against this guy will it take before every genuine Democrat in America wakes up and says no to him? The fact that he persecutes women, gays and scientists apparently doesn't make him undesirable enough.

Yes, you are correct - he is a creationist and anti choice as well. We must not forget to include this in our message. The more I think about it, the worse it is. I wrote to him and asked him to decline. I was wondering if there is an organized movement to do the same. He probably would not, but this message needs to get out to him that he is not wanted - and it needs to be addressed to him as well as Obama.
