Warren

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), one of only three openly gay members of the House of Representatives, released a statement harshly criticizing Barack Obama's decision to have Rev. Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his inauguration:

"I am very disappointed by President-elect Barack Obama's decision to honor Reverend Rick Warren with a prominent role in his inauguration. Religious leaders obviously have every right to speak out in opposition to anti-discrimination measures, even in the degrading terms that Rev. Warren has used with regard to same-sex marriage. But that does not confer upon them the right to a place of honor in the inauguration ceremony of a president whose stated commitment to LGBT rights won him the strong support of the great majority of those who support that cause.

"It is irrelevant that Rev. Warren invited Senator Obama to address his congregation, since he extended an equal invitation to Senator McCain. Furthermore, the President-Elect has not simply invited Rev. Warren to give a speech as part of a series in which various views are presented. The selection of a member of the clergy to occupy this uniquely elevated position has always been considered a mark of respect and approval by those who are being inaugurated."

And Joe Solmonese, the president of Human Rights Watch, wrote in the Washington Post Friday about his own disappointment:

It is difficult to comprehend how our president-elect, who has been so spot on in nearly every political move and gesture, could fail to grasp the symbolism of inviting an anti-gay theologian to deliver his inaugural invocation. And the Obama campaign's response to the anger about this decision? Hey, we're also bringing a gay marching band. You know how the gays love a parade.

Yes, the Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of the humongous, evangelical Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif., has a sound message on poverty. And certainly, in the world of politics, there is a view that Barack Obama owes Warren for bringing him before fellow evangelicals, despite fierce opposition during the heat of the presidential campaign.

But here's the other thing about Warren, the author of the bestselling book "The Purpose Driven Life": He was a general in the campaign to pass California's Proposition 8, which dissolved the legal marriage rights of loving, committed same-sex couples.

For that reason, inviting Warren to set the tone at the dawn of this new presidency sends a chilling message to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. It makes us uncertain about this exciting, young president-elect who has said repeatedly that we are part of his America, too.

Look ,aparently we see that a person, by definition, has to be both ignorant and an idiot to not care about (i.e. hate) a group of humans, whichever group that is. Obama is neiter ignorant or an idiot, yet I have no clue why he picked this pastor for whatever ritual the pastor performs.
And it kills me to keep reading gays as associated with pedophiles etc. -for one it is sickening, and two there is not one shread of scientific evidence or scientific statistics to support it. Zero. It's just plain whacked. So Obama has brought this baffoon to the inauguration. It is bewildering and hurts. And it is so weird and has gone over so badly the man MUST have a plan in the long term or we may all be screwed, all of us. I am an LGBT ally for keeps. And I hope Obama has not blow it before even getting started. I am so disappointed now, this has wrecked the joy this election brought. I have tried to not let it but I'm not doing so well with that battle.

Its time for gays to stop pretending that they vote in a block for Democratic candidates. There are plenty of gay right-wingers like the Log Cabin Republicans, gay blogger Matt Drudge, and Cheney's gay Republican daughter.

Are you suggesting that doing the right thing only applies as political payback?

But, the super majority of us did and do vote democrat.

Actually that's not true. Bush pretty well wiped out the Log Cabin contingent. They saw the light and split.

It's one thing to work with Warren where they share goals. It's quite another to honor the man like this. I agree this wrong. Just like Obama should not demonize and ignore the man, he should not elevate him either.

Warren is giving an invocation for cripes sake.

All this made for tv drama is ridiculous.

It's Pres Obama's day. Get over it. He begins his Presidency as the Pres of all the people of the U.S. As as A.A should I be upset that Lowery isn't giving the invocation? Should I be upset that no female pastor is there?

When Obama begins making policy decisions that contradict his stated views on gay rights and women's issues then I will join the protest. Thus far I've seen no evidence of that.

I am so looking forward to 01.20.09 when my Pres takes the oath. Do any of you Obama supporters who are so outraged over Warren wish McCain had won instead?

Just to be fair, I think Obama should give a member of the Ku Klux Klan an important role in his inauguration. After all, we can disagree with others without being disagreeable, and Klansmen are entitled to their racist worldviews.

100% correct! Plus did Barney catch the "last minute inserted loophole" that Bush inserted in the first 350 million dollar bailout which allows for the big bonuses in the financial industry bailouts?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:15 PM on 12/19/2008

I agree. I think Obama should be as inclusive as possible. Where is the racist preacher? Where is the sexist preacher? How about a radical anti-semetic Muslim cleric?

We really need to be tolerant of all intolerant views, because that's what Hope is all about.

Fail on Obama's part. Fail on the part of Dems who are giving him a pass.

Giving legitimacy to a man who has stated that gay marriage is the same as incest and pedophilia is not acceptable.

How is my outrage over my rights having BEEN already taken away equivalent to wanting McCain to have won?

And why would I wait for more injustice to start protesting?

We have been wronged, this is the response!

Kiel,

I sympathize with you. I still feel wounded over the Obama team's outrageous ugly attempts to smear the Clintons throughout the Democratic primary. And the sexism and misogyny that Hillary Clinton endured remains unforgettable.

But keep in mind this increasingly obvious fact. In ObamaLand, the only discrimination that is considered morally wrong is racism. Sexism, misogyny, homophobia, ageism, anti-semitism, and all the rest simply do not count. According to the Obama team, only African-Americans deserve equal rights and equal protection under the law.

About McCain? No way, no how, no McCain.

I am and have been an Obama supporter. He has an amazing mind and I look forward to seeing him tackle the incredible challenges we face, both financially and as a nation split apart by fear and ignorance. I believe he deliberates thoroughly before making any decisions. All of this was reflected in how he conducted his campaign and the transition process that followed.

Yet, Obama's choice of Warren gives me pause and concern. What on earth can come of this except to legitimize a bigot?

Which do you think does the most damage:

a) Obama reaching out to religious right in a mere ceremony, or

b) Barney's leadership in the bank freefall...oops, I mean bailout for Paulson and his cronies

Ahh...here we have it. Representative Barney Frank is personally responsible for the economic collapse of America and personally responsible for every aspect of the bailout. All by himself. No one else has any responsibility in it, just Barney Frank.

Well! I'm glad that's settled then.

movecenter,

There's a big uproar in the media right now over some racist remarks about Obama circulating among a few employees in the state government of Alaska. Gov. Palin has stepped forward and spoken out against these racist activities.

In comparison, Jon Favreau's photo showing him and his buddy sexually molesting the recently named secretary of state Hillary Clinton didn't even merit a response from Obama.

In the same vein, Obama asks a homophobic evangelical pastor to give the invocation at his inauguration.

It's evident from Obama's behavior and the comments of many of his supporters that the Obama administration will continue to treat racism as evil but will tolerate or ignore other forms of discrimination and bigotry directed against gays, women, Muslims, etc.

As I suggested earlier, if we follow Obama's rationale for inviting Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration, it would also be appropriate to ask a known misogynist such as Jon Favreau (I guess he is writing Obama's speech) or even a member of the KKK to take a major role in the proceedings.

It would be so nice to hear from some enlightened civil rights intellect who would signal to gay rights leaders how imperative it is to take the higher moral ground at this time. (Oh that's right--we HAVE--Obama!)
How much wiser would it be to forcefully condemn the hurtful comments Warren has made, yet to publicly set forth the expectaton that his particpation in the inauguration of this President, OUR PRESIDENT, who supports the rights of GLBT is a clear signal that he is ready to turn the page on the hateful and divisive rhetoric he has spewed about this group of Americans. How much wiser would it be to forcefully make known to President Obama gays won't shy away from this celebration in anger and defeat but will be joyously energized by this as a symbol that he intends to take issue with ANY continuation of these of attacks by Warren and others?

Civil rights/gay leaders should make Warren and Obama feel that his participation at this event is his signing of a contract to work FOR change--and that they are both now ACCOUNTABLE for any future attacks.

As soon as Warren retracts the false equivocation of gay marriage with pedophilia and incest, then I'll celebrate.

I suggest when Rick Warren is speaking we simply mute the TV & have a few moments of silence for every LGBT who has been beaten & murdered. Discrimination in the name of the Lord is wrong no matter how you dress it up!

You know what, it doesn't matter what any of you say of think...your views and opinions are just THAT...it's President Elect Obama decision to decide who will do what in HIS inauguration. Barack ran for the highest office for two years and HE WON...it's HIS given right to do what he want at his inauguration. So, if he want rick warren to give his invocation, then so be it...not all of us see things the way he does...and as far as barney frank...he should shout the hell up...Tell me, what happen to all of the gay people in california to allow prop. 8 to fail?...and the gay people was in clinton's corner...not obama....remember...

He won with my money and my support and my vote. Do you appreciate your relationships being equated with polygamy, incest and pedophilia? This is why I get to moan. All the gay folks in California did what they could to defeat Prop H8. Forty-eight percent of the population voted against Prop H8.

People will never be satisfied. How about if Obama had asked a witch doctor, a scientologist, a Native American shaman, a Jewish rabbi or a lesbian priest to deliver invocation. You would all b1tch and whine whom ever it is. No one is ever good enough or holy enough. How can we ever expect to surpass divisions when it isn't possible with all your hang-ups?

This is a brilliant move on Obama's part. The right-wing and even some mainstream media people are still trying to tar Obama with black nationalist Rev Wright. Obama's chosing Warren to deliver the invocation shows that he doesnt take these preachers political viewpoints all that seriously, which is as it should be.

Actually he was working for marriage equality before most people had even heard of marriage equality. Just because he doesn't work for it the same way as everyone else doesn't mean he isn't accomplishing anything. Here's a quote from Rep Frank from the linked article
"I filed my first gay rights bills in 1972 in Massachusetts."
