I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Warren

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), one of only three openly gay members of the House of Representatives, released a statement harshly criticizing Barack Obama's decision to have Rev. Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his inauguration:

"I am very disappointed by President-elect Barack Obama's decision to honor Reverend Rick Warren with a prominent role in his inauguration. Religious leaders obviously have every right to speak out in opposition to anti-discrimination measures, even in the degrading terms that Rev. Warren has used with regard to same-sex marriage. But that does not confer upon them the right to a place of honor in the inauguration ceremony of a president whose stated commitment to LGBT rights won him the strong support of the great majority of those who support that cause.

"It is irrelevant that Rev. Warren invited Senator Obama to address his congregation, since he extended an equal invitation to Senator McCain. Furthermore, the President-Elect has not simply invited Rev. Warren to give a speech as part of a series in which various views are presented. The selection of a member of the clergy to occupy this uniquely elevated position has always been considered a mark of respect and approval by those who are being inaugurated."

And Joe Solmonese, the president of Human Rights Watch, wrote in the Washington Post Friday about his own disappointment:

It is difficult to comprehend how our president-elect, who has been so spot on in nearly every political move and gesture, could fail to grasp the symbolism of inviting an anti-gay theologian to deliver his inaugural invocation. And the Obama campaign's response to the anger about this decision? Hey, we're also bringing a gay marching band. You know how the gays love a parade.

Yes, the Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of the humongous, evangelical Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif., has a sound message on poverty. And certainly, in the world of politics, there is a view that Barack Obama owes Warren for bringing him before fellow evangelicals, despite fierce opposition during the heat of the presidential campaign.

But here's the other thing about Warren, the author of the bestselling book "The Purpose Driven Life": He was a general in the campaign to pass California's Proposition 8, which dissolved the legal marriage rights of loving, committed same-sex couples.

For that reason, inviting Warren to set the tone at the dawn of this new presidency sends a chilling message to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. It makes us uncertain about this exciting, young president-elect who has said repeatedly that we are part of his America, too.

everyone over looks Lowery. PE O invited two civil rights perspectives with Lowery and Warren- not to mention other perspectives that deal with all of us. But all the focus is on Warren. Maybe the two will dook it out.

Warren's views do not equate to a civil rights perspective. Since when does opposition to civil rights equal a civil rights perspective? Get out of here.

I am appalled at this selection. I am no "lefty" - but one of the key legacies of the Bush administration is the blurring of the separation of Church & State. While Rick Warren is by no means the most egregious offender, he is never the less a huge beneficiary of those policies and wields influence in the political sphere over and above his role as a simple Pastor. HIs stance on Choice and Proposition 8 disqualifies him completely from this role at this time, for this President. Obama has been doing everything correct up until now - this is a HUGE mistake. What's clear is that the Permanent campaign strategy formulated by Karl Rove is being embraced by this President. Change we can believe in? Hah!

Has Barney introduced any pro-gay rights bills to the house? If not, then isn't some of this outrage a little misdirected? Just asking.

Actually he has. He also founded the Stonewall Democrats, an LGBT Democratic organization and is widely considered to be a leading activist in Congress for LGBT rights. It tool all of 2 minutes to find that info through a Yahoo search.

Hey Barney, I'm disappointed with the way you prevented stricter regulations on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and you insistance in 2007 that the housing situation was basically sound.

Wrong. Maybe you should be praying with Rick for better finances for all in 2009.

I said during the primaries that Obama was for Obama and whatever he needed to say to appear to be more tolerant and understanding than Hillary, he would do. This is an example of the real Obama. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it. Move to Canada. I did and now i am a legally married gay man. The messiah definitely did not come for the second time. He's just the sad Oz behind the curtain.

Even though I'm all for gay rights, I protested over Prop 8 and everything. This is more than just about gay people this time. I'm assuming you were a Hillary supporter and you were just waiting for Obama to do something that you could stand and point your finger at. Well, this is Obama trying to show that he's trying to be a uniting President and not such a divisive one. Why can't you take it that he's trying to get us past the culture wars that we have in the country?

Hopefully, one day our country will be as tolerant of gay marriage as Canada.

I find Warren's views deeply offensive, to say the least. However, I truly believe that folks don't appreciate what Obama is up to. His invitation is not a cynical, pragmatic ploy. (Although it is clever politics. He now has Warren praising him.)

The decision goes to the heart of how he intends to overcome the culture wars. To appreciate what he has up his sleeve, we've got to take a step back and understand that Obama is a pragmatist all the way down.

Listen, this pick is nothing more than evidence of Obama's desire to appeal to moderates and conservatives as well as the liberals and minorities that elected him. I'm rather surprised at it, but we can all understand it in this light.

Regarding the accusations of "homophobia" against Warren, we should keep in mind that not everybody views the gay lifestyle as morally equivalent with more traditional views of family. Barney Frank is an excellent public servant, but that doesn't validate his moral choice and example to those who believe in the traditional view of God and family. Homophobia - aka "abhorrence for the sin of homosexuality" and the greater sin or not knowing it's a sin - is deeply embedded in the Bible. It's the justification of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and is condemned elsewhere in the Bible again and again. If you believe otherwise you are kidding yourself.

Sorry if that hurts, I'm personally tolerant of those gays I know, but I think it's intolerant of gays and others to view the religiously oriented as intolerant simply because they adhere to their religious beliefs.

Because Rick Warren is opposed to embryonic stem cell research, he stands in the way of my diabetic daughter's life being saved by that research. Rick Warren says my homosexual nephew is as bad as a pedophile. Warren denies my granddaughters the right to have an abortion.

Why do you think we voted for Obama? To have him betray us like this? People can defend Obama’s wanting to be inclusive until they’re blue in the face, but Obama is wrong – terribly wrong. Rick Warren may give his money to poor people, but his opposition to abortion and birth control are largely responsible for that poverty.

Rick Warren's inclusion in the inauguration is as offensive to me as having a KKK minister would be to Obama.

"Rick Warren's inclusion in the inauguration is as offensive to me as having a KKK minister would be to Obama."

Exactly, if Obama wants to be so inclusive why doesn't he invite some klan members to speak?

It is impossible to appeal to moderates and conservatives as well as the liberals and minorities that elected him.

Obama has made his choice. He went with the conservatives.

Not so, that's spin. There's a lot of that out there. I heard a recent explanation that says S & G were destroyed because they were "inhospitable." This theory was dispensed by a rather famous lesbian theologian as I recall.

I think it's funny and sad how people try and reread the Bible so it will overlook or even justify what the Bible clearly condemns. The Bible is what it is. If it is what we make of it, then we end up going outside the Bible for our morals.

Let me add that I don't think this is necessarily a bad idea at all.

For the umpteenth time, it is not a lifestyle nor is it a choice.
It is them picking and choosing a book from the old testament that also says that shellfish or wearing clothing made from more than one material is and abomination.
The do not practice Christianity they are KKKrestians that want to bring back dominon over the rest of us in the form of Do as I say not as I do. Perhaps its a personality flaw that they need to feel supperior with their inferiority complex so they can feel like they are better than others.
At any rate they are pathological in their personality disorder.
I spend years going to various churches and trying to figure it out. I come the the conclusion they are sick and need psychiatric care. Other wise why would the be so concerned about that wish had nothing to do with them. WE want equal rights under the law, not in their homes or their churches etc.
I don't want anything to do with them. Try having someone sticking their choice in your bidness, or interfering with your life, medical care or who I leave my worldly goods to.

For me, it's going to be great and I want all sides to come together for PE Obama's swearing in and benediction, if not just for a moment of partying, for some national healing.

Barney Frank has been a disappoint in all this bailout mess and his continual infighting.

Yeah, Barney, well what about the balls position he took of naming The openly gay guy as secretary of the navy. C'mon, he's trying to not piss everybody off and stay cordial and polite so he can get something done in the next 8 years instaead of having 8 years of nose to nose arguments like Bush and clinton had/

I personally couldn't think more of Obama for his choice.

I may not agree with the person he chose, but I recognize that this movement isn't about any one person's feelings or positions. It's about something more.

Obama is keeping his campaign promise to end politics as usual and to reach out to everyone. I find it very admirable. This is the first time I can remember someone going to Washington and actually doing what they say they're going to.

It's just a prayer, it's not like he's abandonded all of his principles. We need to stop looking for disappointment around every corner and instead see why this is a sign of things changing- for real this time.

You can be a strong supporter of Gays and not support Gay Marriage. Some of my family and friends are gay and are treated with love and respect at all times.

I totally agree with allowing equal rights to gays but I stop short at marriage. If I am not mistaken; Obama has said he is against gay marriage, so why the shock and awe about his decision?

Opinions are like a$$holes....we all have one and some stink! We will never ALL agree on any subject, ever in life, never ever but it doesn't mean you're right or I am wrong it just mean we have different views and values.

Genuine love and respect requires that you see people as equals and treat them that way. If you don't support equal citizenship for gay Americans then you are not treating your gay family members and gay friends with love and respect. You are treating them as second-class citizens in America.

Pastor Rick is against civil unions. He is actively against reproductive rights for women and actively against scientific research. He has publicly stated that marriage between two loving, adult, gay people is the same as in cest, polygamy and pedophelia. Your gay friends and family deserve better than the likes of Rick Warren being honored at our inaugural celebration. We all deserve better and that includes President-elect Obama.

Has Rick Warren ever read Walt Whitman's beautiful poetry?

His interpretation of the bible is truly narrow and close minded. If a religion cannot adapt to contemporary conditions it will become a dying religion. Rick Warren better watch out!
