CAYLEE ANTHONY REMAINS IDENTIFIED

Missing Florida Girl

ORLANDO, Fla. — Pieces of a tiny skeleton found in swampy woods can tell investigators one thing: Missing 3-year-old Caylee Anthony was killed. What they can't help explain, authorities said Friday, is how or when she died. DNA tests conducted on remains found by a utility worker last week less than a half-mile from where the child lived matched Caylee's genetic profile, a county medical examiner said. But the only clue they give about her death is that her bones didn't suffer trauma, said Orange County medical examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia.

"Bottom line is, folks, no child should have to go through this," Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said.

The discovery of the child's remains came after months of searches, twists and turns in the investigation. Caylee's mother, 22-year-old Casey Anthony, was indicted in October on first-degree murder and other charges, even though no body was found. She has insisted that she left the girl with a baby sitter in June, but she didn't report her missing until July.

A search team said they did not check the wooded area sooner because it was under water from the summer's heavy rains. But the utility worker who provided the tip, Roy Kronk, said he had contacted the sheriff's office in August to report that he had seen "something suspicious, a bag, in the same area."

The sheriff's office said he first called on Aug. 11 to report the bag. A deputy responded but didn't find anything and was unable to locate him. Kronk called a crime hot line the following day and the information was passed on to the sheriff's office criminal investigation division. On Aug. 13, he called the sheriff's office a third time. He met a deputy, but authorities cleared the area as a place of interest in the search a short time later.

Beary said his department was investigating its response.

"If we missed a window of opportunity, we don't know," he said. "I'm not throwing anybody under the bus because we don't know."

It took authorities several days to analyze the remains found last Thursday, and some are still undergoing tests. Some of the bones were as small as a pebble and had been scattered, and the fragments were hard to find by excavators who searched on their hands and knees, authorities said.

Garavaglia _ the star of cable TV's "Dr G: Medical Examiner" _ said authorities concluded Caylee was killed through DNA tests and "circumstantial evidence." But she said she was certain this was homicide, not an accident, and didn't expect further testing to reveal a specific cause.

"I wouldn't have issued the report if I wasn't sure," she said.

A jail chaplain told the girl's mother that the remains were Caylee's before the news conference began. Her attorney, Jose Baez, was with her at the jail shortly after.

"This is her private moment," Baez said. "This is her life she's trying to battle through right now."

The case captivated the Orlando community where the little girl's family lived, and Caylee has been a staple on national news as her grandparents pleaded for tips, promising that the girl was still alive.

Volunteers and investigators mounted several searches through the summer and fall, looking at wooded areas near Orlando International Airport, local parks and even the grounds where the bones were found.

Caylee's grandmother first called authorities in July to say she hadn't seen the girl, whose third birthday passed shortly after her disappearance, for a month. Her daughter's car smelled like death, she said.

Police immediately interviewed Anthony and soon said everything she told them about Caylee's whereabouts was false. The baby sitter was nonexistent and the apartment where Anthony said she had last seen Caylee had been empty for months. Anthony also lied about where she worked, they said.

Other troubling details emerged: Photos surfaced of Anthony partying after her daughter went missing. Friends said she was a habitual liar, but also a good mother.

Last month, the Orange County State Attorney turned over almost 800 pages of documents showing someone used the Anthonys' home computer to do Internet searches for terms like "neck breaking" and "household weapons."

In mid-March, someone searched Google and Wikipedia for peroxide, shovels, acetone, alcohol and chloroform. Traces of chloroform, which is used to induce unconsciousness and a component of human decomposition, were found in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car during forensic testing, the documents say.

Brad Conway, an attorney who represents George and Cindy Anthony, Casey's parents, said they will cooperate with investigators.

"They know now their precious granddaughter is safe and can serve as a guardian angel to protect missing children and their families," Conway said.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Anthony faces an automatic life sentence as prosecutors have announced they will not seek the death penalty. Her trial is scheduled for March.

Without knowing how the girl died, a defense lawyer can suggest to a jury that labeling Caylee's death a homicide is only speculation, said A. Russell Smith, a Jacksonville attorney and immediate past president of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

"Juries are particularly conscientious in homicide cases because the penalties are so severe," Smith said. "So, to the extent that there are gaps in critical evidence, it makes the prosecutor's job much more difficult."

Really beautiful video tribute to Caylee:

Has a poem that sums it all up... so very sad. At least we know she's safe now.

Why aren't the thousands of other missing children out there getting this much press? Just curious.

According to Nancy Grace, because she is a"beautiful little girl"...
02:47 PM on 12/20/2008
Now, be fair. Nancy gave Curtis McCoy 5 minutes when it came out that his father had been responsible for his disappearance at age two. I think she even covered mom's grief when the daddy was allowed to walk even though he confessed that Curtis was dead because of him.

I think she gave C.urtis Mc. coy five minutes when the news came out that his dad had killed him. She might have given five more minutes when it became clear that daddy would walk.

Good question, I see it as another 'convenient' diversionary tactic which is being conducted in FL by the Bush cartel. Convinced that they will use anything and anybody to divert attention from their Administrations antics while it is in the 'throes' of ceasing!

That has nothing to do with BOOSH! It has to do with discrimination. Not everything bad in this world has to do with BOOSH. Get your tinfoil hat off

Notice how whenever a little black child, or latino child, or asian child, or any 'child of color' (or any disabled child for that matter), goes missing, we never hear a word about it? Only the precious little white children. How disgusting. I'm so sick of this story.

I don't care of any reasons attributed to the death of someone so young. The fact is that this is a totally dependent human being, that was not given a chance in life.

Wherever the responsibility lies, a life sentence IN GENERAL PRISON POPULATION seems about right. They could be OUT after serving only a year or two.

Unfortunately, Caylee is in much better hands right now.

WHERE DID CAYLEE GO EVERY TIME SHE WAS WITH THE NON-EXISTENT NANNY - FOR 2 YEARS?

I think the whole family is missing major marbles in their heads...

Mommy-dearest & Caylee lived with grandma & grandpa ... Caylee had a non-existent nanny for 2 years - mommy-dearest had a non-existant job ... how is that possible that grandma & pa never, ever put it together that their daughter was nuts and a liar? Did they never say they'd drop Caylee off or pick Caylee up?

WHERE DID CAYLEE GO EVERY TIME SHE WAS WITH THE NON-EXISTENT NANNY - FOR 2 YEARS?

Zannie the nanny had things under control. Zanny equals Xanax. Toss in a little Valium and you've got partying for HOURS on end.

We only follow this story because Casey the sociopath is good looking. Ugly people kill their kids too, but that doesn't garner the same attention or ratings. There's a term called the Angel Effect that describes how attractive people get more and get away with more in life compared to the average looking to ugly. Hopefully, the jury won't be influenced by her looks. And I don't think it was an accidental death like some say. The only sensible sentence is execution.

How sad is our society!
11:09 AM on 12/20/2008
The Mother, Grandparents & Brother did not disclose the truth, which indicates foul play on their part. How could anyone harm such a beautiful young child and not work with the police so justice and victory is the end result for Caylee. The kindness of strangers who are working on Caylee's behalf will bring the justice she deserves. Please book the entire family on neglect and lying to the police!
02:50 PM on 12/20/2008
The sad thing is that people ignore SUSPECTED abuse/neglect all the time. I can't imagine the Child Protective services industry if all these cases were reported and had to be investigated. Forget about the HUGE need for foster homes when all these kids are snatched from their homes.
11:07 AM on 12/20/2008
These police need to be investigated for missing THREE OPPORTUNITIES over the last SIX MONTHS to find her precious little remains. RIP little Caylee.

I posted this before, but it never appeared. Please, someone explain to me what kind of a psycological anomoly creates such a monster. I cannot understand how a human mother could do this to a child and then "dump" the body so callously. Please, anyone, explain it to me.
10:21 AM on 12/20/2008
Unfortunately, you are seeking a rational explanation for irrational acts. In my work, over the years I have seen mothers kill their children and I cannot "explain" it. The texts can give you explanations of the psychological defects involved, but again, I don't feel they "explain" these acts so that a healthy and rational mind can comprehend.

Sociopath. They don't consider the needs of anyone else. Their needs trump all. Thankfully, most do not demonstrate this grave indifference to human life. Or at least they don't get caught.

I was deeply sadden about this announcement on yesterday.
I really do believe Caylee's grandparents know something about this also.
08:06 AM on 12/20/2008
It's my understanding Casey wanted to give her child up for adoption and Cindy insisted she keep Caylee. This entire family considered it"s needs ahead of the child and this darling little girl paid with her life.

How terribly sad the child in dead and the family will, most likely remain in denial in the same manner as Scott Peterson's family.
12:44 PM on 12/20/2008
I heard the same thing - that Casey wanted to give the child up for adoption and Cindy said no.

If the grandmother hadn't interfered that child would be alive today.
01:22 PM on 12/20/2008
Or moved for custody...which is what most "fearful" grandparents or others do in a case of a "reluctant parent."

I don't understand - if they're unable to determine a cause of death, how can they call it a homicide?
07:50 AM on 12/20/2008
Because there was ducktape around the skull.
11:28 AM on 12/20/2008
Maybe she sold her skeleton to a collector for a bus ticket to disney world, then later died-- a 3 year old can't survive long without a skeleton.
07:51 AM on 12/20/2008
In a natural death, no one would throw the body into the woods. The only reason to do that is in an instance of homicide.

What if the girl walked into the woods and got bitten by a snake or a spider or had a heart attack or a stroke or she drowned. Now the duct tape on the other hand is sketchy, but what if she was playing with duct tape that she found and it suffocated her. I don't mean to sound odd with these comments but I'm pretty sure that if I was being charged with dispatching my own daughter I would like someone to put a real case together. It's like they're charging her with.."well we know you did it" so....guilty!

Her obvious guilt aside, the law has certain requirements that should be met.

I've followed this tragic story for months, and have yet to hear any mention of this child's father. Based on the interviews I've seen with Casey Anthony, she appears to have a serious personality disorder, and should not have been caring for a young child. Where is Caylee's father?
07:55 AM on 12/20/2008
There was a guy whom Casey had identified as the father when she was about three months pregnant. He was smart enough to have a paternity test done, and was found not to be the father. Incidentally, the completion of that DNA test was what helped the FBI to identify Caylee -- as there was a DNA protocol in existence for them to compare the remains to.

Casey now claims that Caylee's father was another man, now dead, who died in a car accident. His family says they have no idea whether or not her claim is true.

I guess we'll never know now.

If Caylee's father was dead, then, Casey would have been collecting the father's social security for Caylee. Casey was broke. She would not have been broke with a check coming in every month. No check has ever been spoken of as far as I know. I have been following this from the beginnig. The trunk of the car is the proof of homicide.
02:22 PM on 12/20/2008
If they have samples of Casey's DNA, Caylee's DNA and supposed dad's, he could be ruled out or in. Not that it matters now.

"'They know now their precious granddaughter is safe and can serve as a guardian angel to protect missing children and their families,' Conway said."

Safe? She is dead. She had her little life snuffed out of her by a depraved monster and that monster might well be her own mother.

Myself, looking at the incompetence of the police when first notified of the remains, I have doubts that they can investigate this matter with any kind of certainty. This is very troubling.

There is truly something wrong with a society that will allow this little girls murderer to get married in prison, while law abiding gays still do not have this right. Simply. Amazing.
