NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Elizabeth Alexander was a toddler in a baby stroller when her parents took her to hear Martin Luther King's historic "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington.

Now, it's Alexander's turn to move the nation.

Alexander, professor of African-American studies at Yale University, was chosen by President-elect Barack Obama to compose and read a poem for his inauguration on Jan. 20.

"I'm completely thrilled and deeply, deeply honored," Alexander said Thursday.

Alexander's mother is a historian specializing in African-American women's history at George Washington University. Her father was a presidential civil rights adviser and secretary of the Army.

"The civil rights movement was fully alive in our home," Alexander said.

Attending King's 1963 speech was an iconic moment for the family.

"That story was always a part of family stories that were told as a way of thinking about the importance of being civic, the importance of looking forward, the importance of having visionary leaders, the importance of involving yourself with the community, the importance of recognizing the historical moment and historical possibilities," Alexander said.

Alexander said her parents are thrilled at her selection.

"This is an incomparable thrill to them in the way that Obama's presidency is an especially potent and powerful thing for African-Americans in their 70s who have devoted their lives to progress," Alexander said. "To be a part of it, I almost can't imagine it myself."

Alexander, who is 46 and married with two children, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005 for her collection "American Sublime." Her other books include "The Venus Hottentot," "Body of Life" and "Antebellum Dream Book."

Last year, she won the $50,000 Jackson Poetry Prize.

Alexander will be only the fourth poet to read at a presidential swearing in. Robert Frost read for President John F. Kennedy, while Maya Angelou and Miller Williams read at President Clinton's inaugurations.

"I think what I hope to symbolize and demonstrate is the important role that arts and literature can play in this moment when the country is thinking so keenly about moving forward and coming together," Alexander said.

Alexander acknowledged the challenge before her. She said she does not start with a message in mind, likening the process to a radio antenna in which she listens for the right language.

"You're always trying to catch a rhythm," she said. "It's something I will be chipping away at every day."

Alexander is friends with Obama from her days when they were on the faculty at the University of Chicago in the 1990s.

"That friendship makes this opportunity all the more special," she said.

Tree Swenson, executive director of the Academy of American Poets, welcomed her selection.

"Elizabeth Alexander is a superb choice for the Obama inauguration: She is from Washington, she represents Obama's generation, and she has written about the civil rights conflict and other historical events that have shaped the character of this country," Swenson said. "At the same time, her intense personal vision reveals the commonplace life illuminated from startling new angles _ as good poetry always does."

Former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins said Alexander faces a tall order.

"I don't envy her," Collins wrote in an e-mail. "Such poems are nearly impossible to bring off. Because of the heaviness of the subject the risk is that you will end up under it rather than on top. I wish her well and I'm certainly glad Obama is making room for a poet."

I wrote a piece, poetry not, upon his election. The piece arose out of contemplating a garden photograph taken on November 1, 2008. It was a razzle-dazzle brilliant fall color photo........ I think she will have no problem, the moment is full of inspiration.

"I'm completely thrilled and deeply, deeply" happy with this choice. Ms. Alexander is wonderfully talented and a great person. She reflects so many of the gifts that make PEBO an admirable person. It's extra-special that she's a native Washingtonian and her parents have such a strong history in the civil rights movement.

Some elitist obscure poet... not Hip Hop, not Dada, not Modernist, not Movement, not Beat, not Post-Modern, not new, whoopti doo.

Elitist? Whaaa? Obscure? Not to those of us who actually read contemporary poetry.

Have you read Elizabeth Alexander's work? I'm thinking not.

And given that Dada, Modernism and Beat poetry are all examples of literary movements from the past, what exactly would be "new" about having such poems read? You want to resurrect T. S. Eliot or Ginsberg to perform at the inauguration?

Hmmmm....

I avoided sleep for years,
up at night replaying
evening news stories about
nearby jailbreaks, fat people
who ate fried chicken and woke up
dead. In sleep I am looking
for poems in the shape of open
V's of birds flying in formation,
or open arms saying, I forgive you, all.

I had to laugh when I read this excerpt from "The Venus Hottentot":

“Her genitalia will float inside a labeled pickling jar . . . ”
“Monsieur Cuvier investigates between my legs, poking, prodding . . . ”
“Since my own genitals are public I have made other parts private.”

Just proves that art is anything and anything is art.

What is that supposed to mean?

Do you know anything about Venus Hottentot and the history behind it?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:50 PM on 12/19/2008

Bystander, you should first take the time to understand something before you "laugh" at it. If you were a responsible reader, you would first get a history book ( or google) and find out all about the venus hottentot, the black woman who-after being put on display in a cage like an animal because of her body shape - finally suffered the fate of having her genitals torn off by whites so that they could "study" why she was shaped the way she wa. You're disgusting.

Saarjite Baartman/ The Hottentot Venus
After her death at the age of twenty-six. Pseudo-scientists interested in investigating "primitive sexuality" dissected and cast her genitals in wax.

This introduction to the history of human displays of people of color demonstrates that cultural difference and "otherness" were visually observed on the "native" body, whether in live human exhibitions or in dissected body parts on public display. Both forms of spectacle often served to promote Western colonial domination by configuring non-white cultures as being in need of discipline, civilization, and industry.

I can say so emphatically because it simply tells me you read serious poems upside down. You are a very sad person one, and ask God to forgive you your sins because to me you are disgusting two.

On three? I think you should be treated with the contempt that it deserves. She wrote in English jerk!

Should've picked Bob Dylan.

He's our greatest poet, and the man sang at the big Civil Rights March on DC way back in 1963, so it ain't like he couldn't bring some perspective.

"I don't envy her," Collins wrote in an e-mail. "Such poems are nearly impossible to bring off."

Maya Angelou "brought if off" magnificantly in 1992. I bought the poem (was published as a very small soft-bound booklet) as soon as it came out. If I recall correctly, Robert Frost could not see to read the poem he had composed for Kennedy, so he ended up reciting one of his older poems that he could recite by memory-- but it was memorable. Can't remember the second poet or poem for the '96 inauguration. So that's 2 of 3 that were memorable. Why is this Collins person so negative?

I think that having an inaugural poem is a great thing, and it should become a tradition--looks like it is one now, at least for Democrats.

"This Collins person" is a well-known American poet and former Poet Laureate of the United States. His comment is probably based on his familiarity a long line of truly dreadful poems written at the behest of sovereigns to commemorate this or that. The Muse doesn't often bestow her favors just because she is ordered to, and and great poems are not written to deadlines. His comment is not negative; it is kind and empathetic.

Yeah, Billy Collins is a very widely respected poet. That said, the way this was published, it came off as mean or jealous, yet I'm more than positive that he meant it in the "Whew, glad, it's not me. Good luck with that." kind of way.

I get what you are saying and I hear it. But c'mon, a poet for an inauguration? What's next, singing sonnets and composing odes dedicated to his morning consitution? I acknowledge the lack of excitement most people have for the written works and would love to see books (real books, paper pages and all) make a comeback but I somehow do not think an inaugural poet is going to inspire a mass of teenagers to get library cards and quote Chaucer.

Great choice Barack.....but wouldn't you rather have a Klan poet to go with Warren......you know to bring divergent people together.

I guess he had to throw us something after Rick Warren......too little....too late.

Maybe its time you learn that you can't manipulate your way out of everything......just ask Bill Clinton....oops....bad example.

It looks like you already have.....although even Clinton at his most blatantly....triangulating worst.....would never have given such a naked quid pro quo to a homophobic hate monger on a historical stage.

Don't worry about us Barack.....what we gave you we can take away.....keep it up and enjoy your single term.....

If the Klan had invited him to their church to let him speak or to their rally He would have. Its just the kind of man he is. SO dont make this a race issue because Obama was on 60 minutes and they talk about extremist wanting to kill him and he even managed to spin them in a good light so you NONSENSE isnt washing cause you what some your hypocritical self dont get this is not an attack on gay or lesbian. This is about reaching out to someone that you dont agree with you reached out to you when he didnt agree with what you said.

So if the Klan David Duke had reached out to him he would have reached back out to them. Leiberman called him unpatriotic a marxist and he forgave him. Thats just the person he is. Some of you know it. This is the guy that tell it straight to AA fathers that they need to get it together and some of you were cheering and now because he is being himself and reaching out as he said now you want to make this a RACE ISSUE well thats BS and you know it. You pull that crap out of your you know what it aint gonna sell.

Warren is giving a motherfu@*in prayer.
This does not mean Obama agrees with everything this man says.
Obama gives people the benefit of the doubt and listens to all sides of an argument before making a decision. He is not a knee jerk reactionary and even if he comes to a decision others do not agree with he tries to make the situation less grevious....
