WASHINGTON — No strollers near the Capitol. No tents on the National Mall. None of that Silly String on the parade route.

That's just a sample of the items forbidden from President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration for security reasons. And while many people say the inconvenience is a small price to pay to witness the swearing-in of the nation's first black president, others are scratching their heads, trying to figure out how they will sit, snack, carry diapers or transport tired tots.

Some older people are backing out of their inaugural plans, partly because of a no-chair rule for the parade route. Parenting blogs are abuzz with complaints about the less-than-kid-friendly restrictions. Thermoses, coolers and backpacks are out at both the Capitol and the parade route.

"Of course, they're not going to say, 'no children,'" said Sunny Chanel, a San Francisco-based contributor to Babble.com, a parenting Web site. "But they're definitely not making it easy for parents with smaller children to go."

The tightest rules are reserved for the lucky 240,000 ticket-holders, who get to sit closest to the Jan. 20 swearing-in ceremony on the West Front of the Capitol. There are understandable prohibitions on weapons and pepper spray. But you also can't carry an umbrella. And don't think about holding up any "Yes We Did" signs _ posters also are not allowed.

It could get tricky as people congregate along the parade route, where many items allowed on the Mall will be off-limits. That list includes bicycles, backpacks, aerosols (which could include Silly String), coolers, thermal containers and chairs.

Signs or placards can be brought to the parade _ but only if they're made of cardboard, poster board or cloth and are not more than 3 feet by 20 feet.

Antron Johnson, who's organizing an inauguration trip with three busloads of Obama supporters from Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., said he's had about a dozen people, mostly elderly, who dropped out after learning about the parade's no-chair policy.

Story continues below

Additionally, Johnson said seven people, including families with young children, recently backed out _ losing their deposits _ because they're afraid they won't be able to maneuver in big crowds. Turnout estimates vary widely, with Mayor Adrian M. Fenty saying 2.5 million to 3 million people are a possibility and the National Park Service planning for at least 1 million.

Johnson said some people are worried about packed Metro trains now that officials are sounding warnings. Metro has said its bathrooms will be closed for security. The option left for parents wanting to change stinky diapers? Hundreds of portable toilets that the transit system and park officials are providing downtown.

"It's truly scaring people," Johnson said. "The news is becoming more and more bleak."

The rules aren't so strict on the National Mall, where most people will end up because tickets aren't required. Officials have said everyone will be checked, but they haven't said what that will entail.

People won't be able to see much, except what's on Jumbotrons, but they can bring all sorts of stuff. Besides the obvious no-nos _ firearms, explosives, fireworks _ the only bans are on alcohol, tents and glass bottles.

"The more you bring, the more difficult it's going to make your movement," said Sgt. Robert LaChance, a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, which patrols the Mall.

Authorities say expect to go through some type of security screening. If you have an item prohibited for a certain area, they will confiscate it. When asked if specific items such as canes, walkers, lighters, matches and diaper bags would be prohibited from the parade route and the Capitol, authorities said they didn't know yet.

this seems like much ado about nothing. Just stay home and worship the new messiah there. His sacred image can be found on plates, coins, rolling stone, source, essence and countless other magazines.

Much ado about nothing?
Seriously?

1) As far as Obama's safety, it's not his supporters that they're worried about.
2) When the President, Congress and three million American citizens gather out in the open, that's quite a target. I'll say no more, other than BRING ON THE SECURITY.

The only people who have referred to Barack Obama in Messianic terms are people like you who are being sarcastic, or other words I can't use here. Those of us who aren't blinded by right-wing bitterness know that he is not perfect, and will have an uphill climb in undoing the mess that has been made by your heroes during the last eight years.

Bear with us, we're just excited to have a President that actually exhibits intelligence and wisdom and doesn't seem intent on making a fool out of himself at every opportunity.

jealous because your guy is such a miserable failure. Because people danced, cheered and partied in the streets all over the world when Obama was elected and the end of Bush was near?

Nice respectful comment for the new Commander In Chief from a "marine"

I am enlisted not an officer and as such I am still permitted to express a negative view about the president. PE Obama is the PE and not the pres. Until he is sworn in the UCMJ does not prohibit military officers from expressing a negative view of him. Lastly the comment I made was neither an endorsement nor detraction about PE Obama but rather a sarcastic comment about the diefication that the image of Obama has undergone.

What ?! Security restrictions for what amounts to a big ceremonial party is "scary"? I think people need to put things in context.

With several million people coming to a single city center, what do you expect? Even if it wasn't the President's ceremony, there would be strict restrictions to make sure people can handle themselves and are able to move and don't trample each other.

With that many people, if you can't walk and stand for extended periods of time, you probably shouldn't go. This isn't a political rally where you are fighting for your rights and need to show strength. If you can handle it, go. If you can't, then make an alternative plan. You can't expect a million cops to personally escort the 3 million visitors.

you know, I don't get why people want to subject themselves to this. I mean, I want to be there too, but most people won't be able to even see the whole thing and I personally hate crowds, I think I'll watch it all from the comfort of my own home!

Ah, c'mon.
Do you also not "get" the entire concert/live entertainment industry?
I mean, why go see Coldplay, when you can just by a CD, right?

I'm going (knowing full well that it will be grueling) for the same reason I go to concerts, and for the same reason 1000s of people gather in Times Square in the freezing cold on New Years' to watch the ball drop-- for the energy of the crowd.

I don't have to spent a day standing in the cold to see most concerts.

I hope it is tightly secured NOW, 24/7...also on the day, all cell phones (except official responders) sound be disabled.

Tight security, like crazy technological advances, are part of the 21st century, too....

Maybe it would be safer if the inauguration were not held as a physical event at all. Just have a hologram of Obama put his holo-hand on a holo-bible, and declare martial law to keep everyone indoors. Yeah, the land of the free & the home of the brave.

Maybe because a while back it turned into land of the free to assassinate good me, and home of the cowards who did so

Wow! Well since he won by a landslide with a mandate, among virtually every constituency within the electorate - including Republicans - there must be a whole lot of Americans wearing that uniform!!! Maybe the ones who DIDN'T vote for him are the ones suffering from a figment of THEIR imagination!!!

Unless if they want another WalMart's Black Friday incident, they better have tight security.

Everyone must remember that PE Obama have received more death threats than any president in history. so they are going to eliminate anything that someone can hide a gun in. They are also doing it for people's protection because they are going to shoot anyone who looks like they have a weapon on them.

Please understand that Secret Service is trying to do everything they can to ensure that this country won't have a tragedy on January 20.

I'm going to save my money, stay and home and watch it with my family on tv. Also, I'm going to record it on video and save it.

Of course they do not want children there. Small children will not be able to remember the event, and will be especially vulnerable to the cold. I would personally love the idea of being there, but would never take a child there. I wish people would think.

Unless you are planning to carry a small child on your shoulders they will not be able to see anything! Nothing says ruin the moment like a small child complaining that they cant see and wanting to use the bathroom every few minutes LOL

well said to both of you

what are people thinking complaining? even if it wasn't the president, with that huge of a crowd, you need restrictions to keep the people mobile, keep the paths unobstructed, and prevent trampling.

i can only imagine how many kids would get hurt if they didn't have these restrictions and discouraged bringing them. out of 3 million people, a group of a thousand people getting unruly or pushing or shoving wouldn't look like much, but would definitely hurt a bunch of people.

Agreed.
It's like the concept of "babysitter" has completely fallen by the wayside. People drag their poor children EVERYWHERE. I've seen 4-year-olds at Nine Inch Nails concerts. What are these people thinking??

I'll never forget spending half a baseball game gaping in horror at the be-hatted and sunglassed couple holding their tiny pink infant in the beating sun for hours, without so much as a hat. There oughta be a law.

There is; it is called child endangerment; but people have no sense; I once prosecuted a woman that physically assault a ride operator because he wouldn't let the lady take her week old infant on the tilt-a -whirl ride.

How sad that the extra tight security restrictions have to be in place.
Such intensity is no doubt due to the multitude of threats against Obama's life that have originated from various hate groups and those persons associated with them. Given the pitiful and shameful fact that racism still exists in certain segments of our nation's population, the hate filled rhetoric spewing forth from hate groups finds fertile minds in which to grow. Some of those minds are obviously so twisted that they are able to justify the desire to kill another human being who happens to be of another race.

Sad also, because the threats arising from obviously twisted and demented souls drives the intense need to provide such extraordinary security precautions that the ability of most inaugural attendees will be at the least greatly inconvenienced. At the worst some have decided not to attend what is one of the greatest events in our nation's history.

Myself, irregardless of the intense security needs, just the projected number of attendees would cause me to not attend, let alone bring any young children.

That would be so awesome.
A bit nipply, though.

As a parent, I really don't see what the parenting blogs are harping about. They are anticipating record crowds, for the upcoming inauguration, also take into consideration some of the idiots out there who would love to hurt the PE . You would think people would be happy about the extra security. If it is such an issue, keep your a$$ home, with the kids, that is what I will be doing.
Sheesh, people always have something to complain about.

I personally think the large crowd is no place for small children. That is the ONLY reason I am not going. I have a 2 year old and my 9 year old is the type of kid who likes to wander off. I just simply planned a nice spring weekend in DC for the family..that way we can enjoy the sights without it seeming so "rushed" and overly crowed
