With Christmas just a few days away, the holiday shopping season is bearing out predictions that it will be the worst in decades.
Local retailers such as Barbara Turf, CEO of Northbrook-based housewares chain Crate & Barrel, have ramped up discounts and promotions.

We have scaled back our Christmas Gift Shopping.
Times are definitely scary.
And you have to prepare for the unexpected................
Yesterday our furnace shut down. 40 mph wind gusts and a temp at or below zero. Brrrrr
Calling for a repair on a Sunday is very costly.
Had to call and are grateful we could however,
there went my "extra" dollars for holiday shopping, sales and all.

I don't know what the retailers are talking about - everywhere I have gone shopping in chicago land has been packed. EVERY store - even the stores listed in this story. If people are spending less I'm not seeing it.
I think this was the spin of the story before the story happened.
