LONG BEACH, Calif. — Under fire for opposing gay marriage, influential evangelical pastor Rick Warren said Saturday that he loves Muslims, people of other religions, Republicans and Democrats, and he also loves "gays and straights."

The 54-year-old pastor and founder of Saddleback Church in Southern California told the crowd of 500 that it's unrealistic to expect everyone to agree on everything all the time.

"You don't have to see eye to eye to walk hand in hand," said Warren.

Warren also defended President-elect Barack Obama's invitation that he give the invocation at the Jan. 20 inauguration in the keynote speech he delivered at the Muslim Public Affairs Council's annual convention in Long Beach.

Obama's choice of Warren earlier this week sparked outcry from gay rights and other liberal groups, who said choosing such an outspoken opponent of gay marriage was tantamount to endorsing bigotry.

"Three years ago I took enormous heat for inviting Barack Obama to my church because some of his views don't agree (with mine)," he said. "Now he's invited me."

Warren said he prays for the same things for Obama that he prays for himself: integrity, humility and generosity.

Obama defended his choice on Thursday, saying that he has also invited Joseph Lowery, a Methodist minister and civil rights leader who supports same-sex marriage and gay rights, to deliver the benediction.

"During the course of the entire inaugural festivities, there are going to be a wide range of viewpoints that are presented. And that's how it should be, because that's what America's about. That's part of the magic of this country ... we are diverse and noisy and opinionated," Obama said.

Toward the end of his speech on Saturday, Warren also talked about singer Melissa Etheridge, who performed earlier in the evening. Warren said the two had a "wonderful conversation" and that he is a huge fan who has all her albums.

The openly lesbian gay rights activist even agreed to sign her Christmas album for him, he said.

Warren gained a prominent role in the presidential election in August when he hosted the Civil Forum on the Presidency, a two-hour televised show in which he interviewed Obama and his Republican opponent John McCain for an hour each on faith and moral issues.

Warren has won kudos from some liberal quarters by focusing less on traditional conservative issues such as abortion and gay rights, and instead calling on evangelical leaders to devote more attention to eradicating poverty, fighting AIDS in Africa, expanding educational opportunity for the marginalized, and global warming.

But the preacher ignited the ire of many liberals when he publicly supported California's Proposition 8, which amended the state Constitution to ban gay marriage.

Although Warren has said that he has nothing personally against gays, he has condemned same-sex marriage.

"I have many gay friends. I've eaten dinner in gay homes. No church has probably done more for people with AIDS than Saddleback Church," he said in a recent interview with BeliefNet. But later in the interview, he compared the "redefinition of marriage" to include gay marriage to legitimizing incest, child abuse, and polygamy.

Warren founded Saddleback Church in 1980 in Lake Forest, about 65 miles southeast of Los Angeles. He is the author of numerous Christian books, including "The Purpose Driven Church" and "The Purpose Driven Life," which has sold more than 20 million copies.

(This version CORRECTS Melissa Etheridge sted Ethridge, CORRECTS that book 'Purpose Drive Life' has sold more than 20 million.)

Rick Warren may be a good man in the eyes of many, he may have done many good deeds, however, he is teaching discrimination from his pulpit based on his views, not God's view.
God is love and does not discrimate.
I have read about Rick Warren, I do not need to read anymore. The truth is in his spoken words, not in a book or article. No one has said he is an "Evil Man" ...everyone has said he is a bigot/hypotrite.... bigot/hypotrite and evil have two very different definitions.

Rick Warren is good man. He is helping poor people. Not because you don't agree with him then he become evil into your eyes.

To at least he shows love to less fortune around the world. Read more about this guy and you will agree with.

They are other people around the world who can not even think about this holiday.

GOD created me a lesbian and all gays, African Americans, the straight community, all .... in GOD's image. I have nothing to fear as GOD loves me without conditions. I am created in God's image, I am love... If one cannot see to love all regardless of differences, one is not loving God. My church teaches love for all without exception.... and your church? Rev. Warren remember you represent the ministry, the Lord.... the Bible was written by man and man is not flawless. As a minister, judging a community and comparing us to pedophiles and living in incest is not very christian. Commitment means more than marriage today. Marriage and divorce is a style thing...in and out over and over. I choose Marriage with commitment forever and a day. I battled death to live my life and now I am happy, joyous and free, just like GOD intended.

Hey you Rick Warren critics - Are you scared? If so, what are you scared of? That some people like Melissa Etheridge might have her heart touched by God and realize that Rick Warren is not AGAINST gays, just FOR the Biblical definition of marriage? If you're not sure of the Biblical definition of marriage, look it up for yourself and, better yet, IF you're courageous enough, ask God (that's a dare!) and don't fight Him when He answers your conscience! And this goes for the issue of abortion as well. Rick Warren is a PASTOR, and he believes in the inerrancy of the BIBLE. And all he ever quotes in his defense of his positions IS the BIBLE, which is a Christian pastor's handbook. So....
What are you afraid of? If there's no God, then there's no reason to be afraid...except of people you think will take away your rights. And then if THAT is the case, you need to be praying that God IS real and that Jesus DOES have the power to change people's hearts so that your rights truly aren't taken away! And IF God is real, and if you try to discern whether He is, He'll talk to you. So the only person you need to be afraid of is...YOU! And what YOU'LL choose to do with the truth!
God bless you in your search for truth!

Some of us aren't so much afraid of a god we don't believe in, but just what his fanatic followers are capable of who are willing to suspend critical thought in favor of unwavering belief in an ancient document of bizarre rules and fairy tales.

Your logic is nonsensical, as are your personally-interpreted religio-myths. This is not fear, tedio, its anger. By the sound of your blathering about god, it sounds like you are the one who is afraid. Maybe that is because you know your bigotry is wrong, and it is you who will burn in hell if there is a god. Me, I know I am square. I am being faithful to what "he" made me. Its called integrity, honesty, courage. You should try it sometime.

"You don't have to see eye to eye to walk hand in hand".

So this is why George Bush was walking hand-in-hand with the Saudi King! The King must have been taller than Bush!

It is a good thing that this guy's "created religion" does not have rank and file gowns and robes as he might have to shave then. When you are bigger than your religion, as he is, you should be able to speak to the flock in the manner as he does.

L. Ron Hubbard, a Freemason, wrote up Scientology. I wonder if this man is not a closet Freemason as in his book he talks about a boat than cannot be turned around as it heads towards the east.

Apparently Obama does not realize,by calling him to his inauguration, that he has now given this guy a national stage from which to play his cards. Such as pity.

what is sad is that we can connect all these dots, show how aware we are of the horror and lies and wrap it up to be presented to the world court and no will be indicted or tried or even accused ...
but keep on connecting those dots ... its fun!!

Don't worry GLBT community. Obama will have a "gay band". What the heck is a "gay band"?

GBLT vootes, money and volunteering = "gay band" at inauguration. Abunch of court jesters for king Obama.

Obama: Now be happy because that's all you're getting.

This is similar to when racists would have blk people sing for them.

Dear LGBT community, shut up.

Instead of being angry that Obama picked Warren for the invocation, where’s praise for Obama for inviting Joseph Lowery, a Methodist minister, civil rights leader, and supporter of gay marriage, to deliver the benediction?

Barack Obama is doing exactly what he said he would do in his campaign: being inclusive and reaching out to everyone to work together productively with them, whether he agrees with their positions or not. He’s not going to make everybody happy with every single decision that he makes, and he warned his supporters of that. He’s focusing on the things people have in common rather than their differences; Warren and Obama do agree on many issues. To build the inclusive nation moving towards change that he wants, Obama will need to include conservatives.

The man delivering the invocation at the inauguration is a staunch conservative that opposes gay marriage.

The man delivering the benediction at the inauguration is an old-school, worked-with-MLK civil rights hero who supports gay marriage.

By selecting these men for their places in the ceremony, Barack Obama has made a statement that is apparently far too subtle for the mainstream media and Obama’s detractors to see: with his inauguration, America is moving forward from the conservative, oppressive past to a future with freedom and opportunity for all. It is about change, which is what Barack Obama has been about from day one.

Being what I am - a pro-gay marriage, pro-choice moderate - I'm not a fan of Rick Warren either. But I'm not going to blast Obama for doing exactly what he said he would in his campaign, which is to be inclusive of all perspectives and viewpoints. And, again, the selection of Warren to me seems to be little more than choosing someone who symbolically represents the recent (disastrously conservative) past, a way of saying goodbye to it as we move forward towards the freedom and equality for all that Joseph Lowery symbolizes. My entire point here is that these people, Warren and Lowery, are only symbols, and their positioning in the inauguration ceremonies says to me that Obama is ditching the narrow-minded zealotry of the past for the more open, accepting future. That's it, and I really don't understand why more people don't the symbolism of their placements.

Meanwhile, what kind of dirty tricks is this Bush administration getting away with in its final days while everybody's in an uproar over symbolic ceremonies?

Is there a 2 way thought process available here - anywhere?

Lowery is a huge choice for Obama to have made - just because he's ok w/you does not mean he is ok with anybody else. No offense vagabond but this choice isn't subtle.

The power of his choice and what it means is being swept under the rug - ignored or misunderstood by the ignorant. This is the man who can help deliver not just black votes but open up dialogue with other traditional churches. This is politics. This is votes - nothing else matters but collecting and saving votes. This man will make Warren look like what he is and show the entire nation. He is a gift on that dais from Obama.

Had Obama chosen some bland god talker instead of Warren and still chosen Lowery these threads would be on fire as the criticisms poured in from across the nation at such a controversial choice.

Big deal - Just another pro gay marriage Methodist preacher, co-founder with Dr King of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference....just some old guy who went to the mountain top with Martin and who is now committed to gay marriage rights.

What use could he be - a real live MLK civil rights organizer on your side and preaching for you.

so help me, I hope he gets mildly ill and can't make the inauguration - no more mr nice gay.

Well said. A lot of people don't get it or have very short memories.

Its time to look for new solutions to hate and fear.

We have lived in fear for 8 years. Enough is enough. Its time to take the higher path.

More humanity and truth, less politics.

What I find most telling is that he uses his church helping people with AIDS as proof that he has nothing against gays. Perpetuating the stereotype that you get AIDS from being gay, or that all gay people have AIDS.

It's quite intentional. They do use AIDS in that way these days - to confirm its association with gays, on the one hand and when it comes to Africa to try to expunge their own history of racism. There's no denying however that fundamentalist Christians in this country delighted in the disease 25 years ago as a sign that God hates homosexuals. It wouldn't be the pandemic it is today, largely among heterosexuals, if it weren't for American Christian fundamentalist homophobia and their tireless efforts for two decades to keep our government from addressing its spread.

I am a Gay. Hath not a Gay eyes? Hath not a Gaky hands,
organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same
food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases,
heal'd by the same means, warm'd and cool'd by the same winter
and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If
you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die?
And if you wrong us, do we not revenge? If we are like you in the
rest, we will resemble you in that.

With apologies to William.

I can understand why some people do not like this man. How can you take him seriously when he does not let "unrepentant" homosexuals be members of his church? He's fine with porn moguls being members though. He also runs programs designed to "cure" gay people. He has often equated gay folks with child molesters and pedophiles.

He probably allows them to attend services and other funtions of the church but becoming a member you would have to agree with what the bible calls sin. That is the reason that his conscience would not allow him to admit them as a member.
