what else does anyone expect from the followers of a religion whose founder married 11 women , forcibly married slaves taken as spoils of war and consummated relations with aisha at age 9.

As a muslim(I'm on the verge of atheism now), you can't help but wonder why these barbaric idiots can't get with the program. all the major religions have updated aka reformed.it is time Islam did the same, for the sake of women and children.

Why are 8 yr old girls allowed to marry at all?

They're not *allowed,* they're *told* by their families in Saudi Arabia whom to marry.

Let's just let her be molested until she is 13 and can decide that she doesn't want to be sexually molested by a 58 year old man anymore because I'm sure the courts will give her a divorce when she turns 12 or 13.

They claim the marriage hasn't been consummated nor the girl even told of the marriage. If she's lucky, the "husband" will die before she's 18.

Why are the religious right wing war mongers so silent when it comes to Saudi Arabia and their close friends the Bush family..?

You don't suppose Bill and Hillary Clinton could help out here. After all the Royal family gave $10 million to Clinton's library. I'm sure Hillary will use her new State department influence to put pressure on the Royal family.

we do we still have this backwards country as a economic alli? This country is terrible.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:26 PM on 12/22/2008

It's not an economic alliance. It's a political alliance of convenience, based on oil and private financial connections of the busches and the saudi royals. busch and company don't want to "rock the boat", but he had sent 4,000 American to their death to settle a private family feud with Saddam without blinking an eye. Try to understand their mindset.

When Obama succeeds at finally breaking the oil dependence, then the royals will have no arm-twisting leverage over American foreign policy any more.

Sold for 5000 British pounds? Sounds like slavery to me.. Why is the international community not in an uproar?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:03 PM on 12/22/2008

International community looks with paternalistic benevolence at this kind of behavior ( boys will be boys in the Middle East).
That and fear of appearing not PC enough. Lest a careless word sets off a world wide protests against "Western oppression of the righteous" and fatwah is issued against the editor, writer and the entire country. Just recall the Danish cartoons.

Isn't this fairly Biblical, right out of Leviticus? What's the problem here? Isn't that the Word?

I do often wonder what "democracy" means to Bush.
I guess it means freedom for all men, but none for women, and he's just fine with that?

The real reason why the Busches are always smiling and holding hands (literally) with Saudi royals is common knowledge --- their family's whole financial fortune joins them at the hips with the Saudi royals -- Carlyle Group, etc. It's not a mystery.

Fortunately, the new fresh wind coming from the Obamas has no ties and no obligations to them, NONE WHATSOEVER! Wouldn't that be wonderful refreshing new start on the life of this nation?

Excuse me but I seem to have missed what Obama's plan was for dealing with a crisis like this. Do you think he's going to impose any restrictions against the Saudis?

Before we get to crazy about the Saudis, let us not forget that Tom Jefferson breeded with a 14yr old Sally Hemmings.

That was 200 years ago, and they were consenting adults. If you can't tell the difference, you'd better check in with a good opthalmologist or a good shrink or a religious minister.

A 14-y.o. S LA V E cannot b e considered a consenting adult.

Are you serious? What slave had the right to consent to fornication with her master? Female slaves and their children were raped. That's where the word "mulatto" came from. They didn't know what to call biracial people back then.

The problem with Jefferson was he fell in love with Sally, his wife's half sister who was conceived via a slave by her father; had 8 kids with her and his damn white relatives had the audacity to deny his DNA in his descendents. Puleeze!

Even in the South during Jim Crow, black women were just taken off the street and raped. Older black women still talk about that mess to this day!!!

Consenting? I think not. You need to read a "real" history book.

What President Jefferson did over 200 years ago and what is happening today are two very different things. One is a matter of history, and cannot be changed.

The other -what this story is about- is happening right now in a nation that has been allowed far too much influence by far too many American politicians addicted to Saudi oil and Saudi money, and is simply institutionalized pedophilia, a dysfunctional, despicable, and degenerate practice that needs to end at once if not sooner.

It's not the 1700's anymore. It would be different if our leader was doing a 14 year old now!!!

At least the Mormons wait until 12 or 13.

Can this 'or' reach 11 too, or maybe 10? What is the criteria for selecting 12 or 13?

Cause, I have seen criteria being used as around that age to be also used for the younger.

If you turn your marriage selection to kids around that age, for some, there is no stopping for going for the younger.

When it comes to religion, "or" goes anywhere you want it to. When it comes to religion, there is no criteria. Ever look at a Christian painting-generally has lot of little flying "children", so in essence, I am in error. For the religious, there is no age limit. As far as myself, I prefer the Bill Maher approach, mid 20's and absolutely no prospect of marriage.

This is a very sad story, bu it is not different than any other incidents like these that happen all over the world. We have it here with the mormons, and we still cannot seem to fix that problem. It's simple and sad that women and children are always last on the totem poll. How sad indeed.

Leave the Mormons out of this fight. I think their practices are slowly, maybe too slowly fading away in the modern society, I might be wrong about that. But the legally sanctioned child bride slave trade reported here is so blatantly obsolete feudal custom that has not been challenged by US diplomatic policy, simply because the bushes are in bed with the Saudi royals.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:30 PM on 12/22/2008

excuses, excuses. the Mormons are just as worst as the Saudis, no point in taking a side when both are disgustingly wrong.
