The FBI has engaged in "triage," taking agents off terror and other crimes to respond to a cascade of financial frauds such as the alleged Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, the head of the bureau's New York criminal division said.

Is it too much to ask for the FBI/Government to protect the country from both terrorism and financial fraud, not to mention numerous other crimes that plague the country?! Perhaps the government should offer incentives to people currently being laid off to come work for the FBI. Then the government would be solving multiple problems - unemployment, security, individual bailouts.

With that said I would guess that the sudden interest in investigating cases like Madoff and other alledged schemes stem from the international ramifications of what has happen. Other countries investors have been affected by things happening in America and America has to answer or else run the risk of losing foreign investments. Thus a boost in FBI attention on these cases to provide answers and show the world we are doing something to prevent further corruptions.

I was told once, by an FBI agent that there are a lot less agents than people think there are. I have been trying to find out how many, though no one seems to want to divulge that information.

So they might not have the amount of resources we think they do.
