The possible, perhaps, impending victory of Al Franken to the Senate has sent GOP officials into a paranoid tizzy.

In an "urgent message" to supporters, the Republican National Lawyer Association accuses Franken and his "liberal allies" of "working feverishingly [sic] to steal the Minnesota Senate election."

"As you may know, the precinct recount phase of the Minnesota Senate race was won by Sen. Norm Coleman on Election Day," reads the petition, signed by the group's executive director, Michael Thielen. "But Al Franken still won't concede. Instead, Franken raised millions of dollars from liberals in New York and Hollywood to fight a "legal" battle to undo the will of the voters. He even got the Minnesota Supreme Court to order canvassing boards to consider about 1600 previously rejected and questionable ballots. Now, Republican Norm Coleman has until December 31st to fight against Franken's liberal legal team to keep his Senate seat. RNLA and Norm Coleman are fighting for every vote -- literally!"

From there, the RNLA asks readers to donate money so that it can uphold the sanctity of the Minnesota election and prevent Franken from "stealing" the Senate seat.

For those following the recount closely, the letter is filled with a variety of obvious misinterpretations and inaccuracies. For instance, the RNLA gives the impression that during the canvassing process, officials "found errors favoring Franken so incredibly statistically improbable that statisticians are questioning the officials in these counties." It's not clear which statisticians the RNLA is referring to. But a study done by a Dartmouth professor actually predicted the very gains made by Franken.

RNLA then says that "during the recount an Election Official explained an error that resulted in Franken losing votes occurred when her precinct double-counted some votes on election night. But after pressure from Democrats made the official change her story the [Secretary of State] Mark Ritchie led Canvassing Board decided for that precinct only the recount did not count and would instead use the more favorable to Franken Election Day total."

In all likelihood the instance they are referring to involved the loss of a very specific envelope of ballots in a highly Democratic district. At first officials assumed they had simply counted those ballots twice on Election Day and could not match that vote total during the recount. Later, however, it became clear that ballots had been misplaced. And when they couldn't be relocated the state decided, as is permitted by law, to simply use the Election Day results and forgo the recount of that district.

The funniest bit, however, comes at the end of RNLA letter, in which the group makes a plea to help Coleman match the money Franken has raised for their "legal battle."

"Since election day when it was clear Norm Coleman had won, Al Franken raised millions of dollars to continue his legal battle. We need to do the same for Norm Coleman."

The Minnesota Republican, of course, is mired in an ethics scandal that could threaten his Senate seat should he win reelection. Franken is just lawyering up for the recount.

I do believe every state has a procedure established by state law as to how elections are conducted, the criteria for being a legal voter and to determine the outcome of elections in close races. The Constitution states "any power not expressly given to the Federal Government is reserved to the states". No where in the Constitution does it say the federal government has any role in determining any of the factors cited in the first sentence above. It seems Minnesota was following Minnesota law to determine the outcome. Remember it was Coleman in Minnesota who went to court to stop the recount. Much as Bush did in Florida, Coleman was unsuccessful in that endeavor. Bush on the other hand got the Supreme Court to stop the recount in a legal procedure established by Florida law. The Supreme Court was so embarassed by their ruling that they state in that same ruling that their decision applies to this election only and cannot be used as a precedent. They did not render the Florida law unconstitutional, they just ordered the recount to stop. It seems Republicans only like state laws that benefit them and then rant against laws that may hurt them. Hypocrites to the nth degree.

wel well, what do we have here. Ben Ginsburg has been advising Coleman's team.

"Ginsberg was forced to resign from the Bush-Cheney team in 2004 after it was revealed that he was also advising the controversial Swift Boat Veterans for Truth."

Hmmm, lost his job working for the President because he was also working for a 527? you see, now THAT's a criminal and thug for you!

Even if Franken wins, there is still the appeal to the Supremes that Coleman can ask for. It worked for Bush. Don't count it over until the fat lady sings.

Forget New Years.
I have two bottles of champagne cooling.
One for January 20, one to celebrate Al's victory.
The bitter vitriol spewing from the right will just make it that much sweeter

I get emails at least twice a week asking to donate to Al Franken for the recount. I have been watching this recount closely, both sides are frantic it seems and Franken can be just plain mean at times, but somehow we don't see that because he is one of us. Is Coleman "mired" in an ethics scandal? It seems rather he is mired in the recount. I like news without the hyperbole. I know, high treason.

mean? IF you are talking about Coleman, I will chalk that up to 21 Century American politics. If he has been "mean" to someone else, I would like to know more aobut it

Yeah, he may come off as mean to you, if by mean you mean passionate, ticked off, and sick-and-tired of GOP crapola.

And YES, Norm is in DEEP WATER, as per your ethics question. Executives from Deep Water Technologies sued their president (Coleman sugar daddy Nassir Kazeminy, Mr. Pants) for allegedly funneling money to Norm via his wife Laurie/Hays Insurance. Four scheduled, three made payments of $25,000 for never given services. He's lawyering up now AND using campaign funds to pay their retainers.

I'd say he IS mired in an ethics scandal.

Would you not?

Franken's been "mean"? No, I haven't seen it, because it isn't there. Asking the state to count perfectly legimate ballots is not mean. However, asking the State to stop recounting entirely and ignore legeal ballots most certainly is.

The worst Franken has done is those hundreds of garbage challenges. And not only did Coleman do the same thing, those were the campaign workers, not the candidates themselves.

It is difficult to have an honest discussion about counting ballots with someone who does not value the truth about national security or economics. As the saying goes, you can tell when a Republican is lying by watching their mouth. If they are talking, they are lying.

Actually allot went on today with the MN Senate recount.

With all the withdrawn challenges Franken is up by 48 votes which is the hardest number we have yet from the recount. This figure is really your unofficial number from the recount.

There still is an issue of some absentee ballots that were previously thrown out but they should be a wash or slightly favor Franken based on previous results and if added they will be counted by the end of the month.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/12/franken-maintains-48-vote-lead.html

Of course Coleman is pushing some double counting legal nonsense but the court is looking at that brief tomorrow prepared by the Franken camp to throw that out of court for lack of evidence.

So tro//s get used to the Dems having their actor in government.

So in the end, it turns out, the people of Minnesota prefer a comedian to a joke.

Whats that famous quote? If you give a man a joke, he will laugh today. If you give him a comedian, he will laugh every day? I think Lao Tzu would want Franken!
