Sarah Palin frequently disparaged the political press when campaigning with John McCain. But she tells Human Events' John Gizzi in an interview that she wishes she had spent more time talking to the media:

GIZZI: What was the biggest mistake made in the '08 campaign?

PALIN: The biggest mistake made was that I could have called more shots on this: the opportunities that were not seized to speak to more Americans via media. I was not allowed to do very many interviews, and the interviews that I did were not necessarily those I would have chosen. But I was so thankful to have the opportunity to run with John McCain that I was not going to argue with the strategy decisions that some of his people were making regarding the media contacts?

But if I would have been in charge, I would have wanted to speak to more reporters because that's how you get your message out to the electorate.

In general, the Alaska Governor (named "Conservative of the Year" by the magazine) seems to think she was over-managed.

GIZZI: And what was the most important lesson you learned from the campaign?

PALIN: The campaign was 99.9% amazing and invigorating and inspiring. But looking back, there were so many things that were outside of my control. I was in a campaign in which I did not know the people individually running the campaign. So I had to put my life, my career, my family, and my reputation in their hands. That's kind of a scary thing to do when you don't know the people you are working with.

...

As an administrator, as a chief executive of a state, I am not used to that. I am used to proving my abilities by calling the shots. Then I know the buck stops with me. I made the decisions, and I'm responsible. When others are making decisions for me, as they were in the campaign, and I am the one to live with the fallout from the decisions that were made on my behalf, that is something I am not very comfortable with.

...

[M]y reliance on seeking God's direction in all that I do -- that is good enough for me. And others who have a different worldview and different strategy on messaging and such, I would like to have the opportunity to prove to them that my gut instincts were going to be quite adequate.

Robert Stacy McCain, a blogger at the conservative American Spectator agrees. Read the whole interview, in which Palin discusses the auto bailout and former Sen. Ted Stevens.

People who continue to promote Palin as the "Hope of the GOP" are just plain out of touch. All she did was "energize" the FAR right, the so-called "base" of the GOP. The majority of people today are clearly fed up with that branch of politics, including many conservatives. Palin was a token. She was an embarassment. She was an insult to EVERY woman, conservative, and thinking person in the land.

The GOP will die if that wing holds on. It will drag it down to its permanent demise. if the far right, the old "moral majority (haha), allows Palin and her ilk to lead them, the GOP will RIP.

Apparently Rightone11 never gets tired of defending the indefensivible.

He must have an amazing stomach to handle all that vomit he spews.

1,600 comments on another Palin story. Way to GO HuffPo !!!! Just think, if she is the commented on person (way more than Obama) on these liberal blogs, it isn't hard to imagine why conservatives are going nuts over her. Keep feeding the fire guys.

I propose that McCains greatest mistake was in selecting her - now we have the burden of knowing who she is and what she stands for - America's past.

How right you are! Here's hoping the voting public pays attention and never lets the likes of Bush, Palin, and the rest of that mentality get a hold of our wonderful country. Thank goodness President Obama wants to get all of us working with him to fix what has been broken.

Sarah Palin is a great American. I think this is what gets to the progressives. She exemplifies what it means to be an American~

She exemplifies the GOP, but America. She was the one who decides who the "real" Americans are, a highly unamerican act.

We're still waiting for Rightone11 to elaborate, aren't we.

I would LOVE for someone to be specific about what is so great about Mrs. Palin. How does she, of all people, exemplify what is means to be American?

A great American? That is just simply funny. She gets to me because her viewpoints are so backwards. It has nothing to do with being an American or a woman or any of the other ridiculous things some conservatives think. I know you think she is a great American and yes for a section of your party she is, but for the rest of the world which is now thankfully 3/4 of America, we simply don't think she is capable. There isn't much more to it then that.

According to whom? I am not sure who you are referring to (Powell, or some other misguided "conservative") but believe me, this is the ONE thing McCain did right~

Woah, woah, woah. " ..could have called more shots on this: the opportunities that were not seized to speak to more Americans via media" Would this be the same liberal media you lambasted every day of the campaign!

I just wish you could have done more interviews .. and we would have had more Tina Fey on SNL

You're are right Sarah! You should have talked to the media more. The few interviews that you were allowed to do turned out so well!!! If only we could have had a little more of your insight and wisdom, I'm sure that you would have lost the election by another 10+ million votes. And why are you still talking? Don't you have to bail out an in-law or something!

This is the point. She KNOWS that the interviews she did do were not good. She wanted the opportunity to be herself more.

This is ok, she NOW has that opportunity, ans she is doing great!~ :)

No. She came across as a complete m o r o n in her interviews. She was stumped when a 5th grader asker her what the duties of the VP consisted of. She couldn't name one newspaper she reads. She seemed to have never heard of the Bush doctrine. She couldn't name one Supreme Court decision not called Roe v. Wade. She couldn't speak in complete sentences. She made things up (I can see Russia from my house). She claimed to have foreign policy experience because she went to Germany LAST YEAR. Same year she got he first passport. Her husband is a member of a secessionist group. Troopergate! Now a d r u g scandal involving the in-laws?

Yeah, she's doing great. I actually do hope that she sticks around and somehow (although I doubt it) becomes the frontrunner for your GOP in 2012. We'll wipe the floor with you guys again.

And frankly, as a journalist, she should have been able to be herself the first time around. She was supposed to have all this experience--more than Obama, Biden, and McCain combined. How many chances did she need?

La Palin says "[M]y reliance on seeking God's direction in all that I do -- that is good enough for me."

Yeah, Sarah, but it's not good enough for the rest of us.

She should hide because she is EMBARRASINGLY stupid and narrow minded. We've had that as a leader and look where it took us. Conservative values are now associated with her. Nothing could be better for liberal thinking people. She is nothing more than a pathetic footnote.
