God bless these children. May justice unlike any other befall those who did this to them. I"m telling you - instead of arming militias and giving VIAGRA to tribal leaders/warlords, give guns to the girls.

Amercian women should be thankful every day of their lives. We don't have to tolerate lawful orders from our husbands; men do not have free rein over us; we are allowed to be independent; we can wear what we want; we can get an education just about anywhere; we can worship beside a man and even hold his hand while praying; we can date, etc. We DO have a voice.

Inscrutable acts. This really brought tears to my eyes.

These examples are just the many reasons why we should never take our education and life itself for granted. I know I am thankful for mine each and everyday.

I am curious as to the sources of statistical data pertaining to this part of the world. Is was said earlier that there were "36 attacks on girls' schools," but who actually does the counting? Is there a trustworthy source of quantitative information in such a lawless region? I suspect that any such source is likely to be tainted by the agenda of whatever armed group is providing protection for its workers. Whom, if anyone, can we trust?

Remember when the Taliban blew up all those ancient cavern Buddhas? They keep girls from school and they ban music. I think they even ban keeping songbirds!

Fighting the Taliban one of the best things we have done as a country and I just wish we had focused on Afghanistan from the beginning without the whole Iraq war.

I hope we can get our resources out of Iraq as soon as it is safe to do so and focus on crushing Taliban. They don't have anything to do with Muslims or the real spirit of Koran.

The root cause is in their teaching. These f@*k ups listen to some bearded mullahs at mosque who try to enforce stone-age rules in the modernistic world.

I always ask my friends why the heck you guys ensemble at 1.00 PM when the real prayer starts at 1.50 PM and ends at 2.00 PM on Friday afternoon. The answer is stupid khudba (the teaching/preaching whatever) . This is where their minds are being corrupted.

I have read Koran. The rules are very nicely written for that age/era but they are not at all applicable to the modern world. I feel momins are scared that their religion is going to be extinct. and that's why they use the scare tactics such as this acid-throwing incident.

Islam needs to undergo its own version of The Reformation, yes. The root cause of the entire Jihadist movement in all of its blood-drenched infamy is the heretical dogmas of the Wahhabists, whom interestingly enough are centered on Saudi Arabia (the House of Saud are Wahhabists, and use their oil money to spread the writings of these violent heretics). Wahhabism also has very deep roots in Central Asia, specifically Afghanistan, dating back to the 19th century.

Mainstream Muslims are not Wahhabists by any stretch, anymore than mainstream Christians are all followers of the Phineas Priests (a violent white supremacist group that claims Biblical justification for their actions). To judge the majority of Muslims with the yardstick of Wahhabism is simply folly.

Education is always the key to breaking the power of any authoritarian dogma, and this is central to the attacks on these girls who "dare" to seek knowledge beyond bearing children and cooking by the "taliban" fanatics. If educated, women will demand their God-given human rights, and a central premise of these thugs will be shown for the lie it is, for all to see.

Break Wahhabism, and you break the "taliban" and their fellow travelers.

You could very easily extend this argument to include all three major sects of Yahwism. The problem is insistence on having exclusive access to the only one true God -- the Hebrew War God (or "Lord of Hosts").

This is where our military needs to step it up and start training these women to use and bear arms. It is the only fair way to deal with the problem.

Doesn't it make you mad when they report on an atrocity not caused by us?

This was an act of terrorism against some children in Afghanistan. If we went into Afghanistan to stop terrorism then we haven't done a very good job. If we went into Afghanitan to exact vengence and retribution then its not surprising that we still have atrocities such as this being commited there.

The Taliban was guilty of gender apartheid. Women were not allowed to hold jobs. Girls were denied an education after age 8. They were only allowed to study the Koran. Women could not appear in public without a male relative and clothed in a burqa, The ground floor windows of residences had to be painted to hide women from view. Women could not appear on balconies.

I understood it was even worse than that. Girls of all ages were prohibited by law from being educated even in the home, and they couldn't even study the Koran, because learning to to read for girls was legally prohibited.

And there was worse: When the Taliban first took control, females were prohibited from getting medical care of any kind. Later this was loosened a bit. A few female doctors were allowed to see female patients, but only in facilities apart from the men's hospital, so the women got the buildings with no running water, electricity, etc.

This was the LAW of the land under the Taliban.

thirtynine steps. The attacks on girl schools in Afghanistan is one of the most underreported stories. In the first two months of this school year, there were 36 attacks on schools. Teachers have been kidnapped. A male caretaker was mutilated when his ears and nose were cut off. In 2006, 200 girl schools have been attacked. Now there are attacking the girl children. One of the reasons this story is getting more air time, Unicef has been vocal in its outrage.

Grossly under-reported, indeed.

The stories of how the Afghans just love the occupying forces and shower them with candy and flowers are far more palatable.

These stories are only told when there is a perceived "need" to increase troops on the ground or to justify their presence.

Well when American Christians start throwing acid at little school girls, then I woudl agree there is moral equivalence. The bottom line is that Christianity has been tamed by the external forces of secularism and the ideas of the enlightenment over the last few hundred years while Islam remains where Christianity was in the 14th century.
Seriously??? American christians were the ones who were responsible for the killing of doctors who performed abortions. Are you saying that one is ok but not the other? Besides thirtyninesteps makes a valid point. Who knows if these things are actually taking place. Media and government have always been known to twist the truth or flat out make up lies.

Throwing acid on an uncovered face of a woman is a very common practice by fundamentalist Muslims. I doubt this is made up.

It's not made up. I was on the NYC subway last year when someone who looked like a burn victim walk through the car with a sign. The sign had a picture of a young woman and the message, "I Am the Victim Of an Acid Attack". Looking back at the person, it was obvious that this was this young woman, although most of her face had been melted. It was tragic. The first I'd ever heard of this brutal form of attack and, once you see it in person, you realize how inhumane it is. Just sickening.
