Richard R. Johnson is the first to admit it was a bad idea.

Recently laid off from a job building trailers in Elkhart, Ind., Mr. Johnson came up a dollar short at Martin's Supermarket last month when he went to buy a $4.99 bottle of sleep medication. So, "for some stupid reason," he tried to shoplift it and was immediately arrested.

Things are going to get a lot worse with our tanking economy. Last weekend somebody stole a very heavy bag of wood stove pellets out of the bed of our truck while we were in the grocery. Speaking as one of those "disgusting liberals" Rush & Bill-o despise so much, if the thief had asked, we would have gladly given him the bag.

Ya know, any old parent can drop 20 bucks on a toy for their kid. But nothing says "Daddy loves ya!" like facing 6 months in the Big House for little Timmy. Ahhh, just feel that Christmas spirit.

Yeah but as Jerry Brown was fond of saying " The crimes in the suites are far worse than the crimes in the streets."

I'm appalled at some of the comments who condone theft. Unbelievable. I thought we voted for change. We're in the mess we are in because of theft on a grand scale. I've worked retail and sell my own wares at fairs. Theft is a major problem from scum who have no conscience. We all suffer when someone commits an anti-social act. The pitiful "do what you have to do" mentality is an illusion. Do always the right thing in life and act on good conscience. If everyone behaved this way, our world would be a lovely place. I wish the worst of times for everyone who acts against the good.

I don't think anyone is condoning anything - it's just reality.

The Five Finger Discount......driving away without paying for gas (at least at non-prepays).....all crime goes up as the economy declines. Crime rate dropped during Clnton years when there were more jobs and times were better for most. Under Bu$h, crime back in vogue.....on and off Wall Street.

I've learned that it always helps to have some data to back up your comments (to avoid any claims that you "fabricated statements" -- something the Conservs/Repubs are commonly guilty of doing). Some links to support your comments:

"During the Clinton administration...Crime plummeted dramatically -- nearly 20 percent -- to its lowest level in a generation. Murders... dropped by more than 30 percent. In short, a wave of crime and violence that had plagued our communities since the mid-1980s was reversed."

"Bush has cut funds for state and local law enforcement...Not surprisingly, crime has started to rise again. Between 2000 and 2002, serious crimes reported to police rose by 2.3 percent. Murders and motor vehicle thefts, which are almost always reported to the police and are among the most accurate measures of crime, have increased by even more (4 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively)."

Crime rates dropped dramatically during Clinton years, but started heading back up just after Bush and the Republicans took over. Murders up 2.5%; robberies up 3.7%.

Just think: shoplifters might end up serving a lot more jail time than Bush/Cheney, who managed to rip off the entire US Treasury for their corporate buddies!

haven't shopped a lick since the day after thanksgiving. the kids knew before then that this was going to be a different christmas than the past two. luckily i am a clearance person, so technically i begin shopping in january. it saved our azzes this year. last weekend i wrapped all of the presents, and since then we have been baking and making gifts for our extended family.

i can't help but think that parents put themselves under unnecessary pressure to buy, buy, buy.....or steal?

Shopping for little things for next x-mas will begin in earnest on Friday here.

Those little things sure do expand the pile-o-gifts X-mas morning. I always wait until Nov-Dec to buy the *big gifts* because of shifting popularity and wants - but this year only spent about half of what I normally do on the *big ticket* items.

So that's why all the mall parking lots are full and the streets around them are in gridlock. They are all there to steal stuff.

Silly me, I was actually paying cash for the presents I bought.
