Think Progress reported Tuesday that a White House spokesman was disputing the notion that President George Bush would not issue a "batch of pardons" at the last minute.

In today's White House press briefing, a reporter noted to spokesman Tony Fratto that the "administration has indicated that the president is unlikely, at the last minute, to issue a batch of pardons." Fratto, however, quickly took issue with that statement, saying, "I don't think we've indicated that." He then hinted that there will be more pardons coming soon.

Shortly later, the AP reported that Bush had in fact granted 19 more pardons:

Before leaving for the holidays, President Bush commuted one prison sentence and granted 19 pardons, including one to a man who helped the Jewish resistance in the 1940s.

With this latest batch, Bush has granted a total of 191 pardons and nine commutations. That's fewer than half as many as Presidents Clinton or Reagan issued during their two terms.

Included in the latest list is Charles Winters, who died in the 1980s in Florida. Winters helped ship arms and aircraft to Jews trying to found their own state in the Middle East. He was convicted of violating the Neutrality Act and served 18 months in prison. Two others, Herman Greenspun and Al Schwimmer, also were convicted but did not serve time. They were later granted presidential pardons.

Bush also pardoned Issac Toussie, who pleaded guilty to making false statements to HUD and mail fraud as part of a massive housing scam.

A full list of the pardons is here.

President George W. Bush's final eleventh hour pardons will go to:

Scooter Libby and... HIs very own Vice President Dick Cheney.

There is no way the Vice President would embark on his current "fair well /confession" tour that he's been on, without assurances there would be no repercussions.

And so it goes. You heard it hear.

Why do Presidents get to do this thing? It is something that Kings were doing all along - but Presidents can pardon? It makes me crazy.
Can this be changed, cause it should be. It's wierd.

It is crazy right? We should get rid of some of those othere crazy ideas that were put in the Constitution like freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and term limits.

Heroes that shot a man already in custody, and tampering with evidence to cover up their malfeasance. Davila should not have been granted immunity, but law enforcement has set rules, and if you pardon the agents when they break the law, why bother enforcing any laws at all?

You have to be kidding. After those guys shot the guy for no reason, and then lied to try to cover it up? They are common criminals and should have been convicted.

Read the story in detail. They didn't shoot the guy for nothing, and I'll take the side of a border patrol officer over a drug runner any day.

Bush legacy:

We kept America safe, except for that thing on 9/11,
We protected the Constitution, except for when we didn't,
We created job growth, except for the millions of jobs we lost,
um, let me think, what else......

They should change the law so that you only get to pardon people during the first 90 days of office. Bush's presidency was nothing more than one long crime spree.

Because it says so here:

U.S. Constitution
Article II
Section 2

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.

Toussie and his father have been notorious developer crooks here in Suffolk County, NY for years.

The DA finally got the son but the old man bought his pardon from W right out in the open.

Don't want to hear another word about the Clinton pardons from those sanctimonous old Repug s0ns of biches.

Bush is petty and vindictive.

As for the Pope making him a saint, the shoe-thrower most likely isn't Catholic and probably isn't responsible for 3 miracles (or per Father Guido Saducci... one miracle and two card tricks). ; )

right, and none for the poor border agents who were arrested for doing their jobs in shooting a drug dealer crossing the border in AZ, and who was given immunity for testifying against said agents!!! The case was slanted against the agents who are serving an eleven year sentence. GWB refused to even consider the case, even though the judge was found to act w/ impropriety in the matter.
but if anybody deserves a pardon it's Ramos and Campeon, US border agents, who were just doing their job and their part to keep America safe, and drug free. It's a travesty of justice.

The border patrol agents chased this man on foot until he stopped and raised his hands in surrender. Then one of these fine American law enforcement officers. tried to hit him across the head with the butt of his shotgun and missed, falling into a ditch. The suspect began to run again and the agents then shot at him fifteen times as he fled. These fine U.S. Border Patrol Agents then tried to bury the shell casings and later lied about what had happened. This sounds to me like another oversimplified, highly falsified piece of folklore, breeding outrage, pumped up by the right-wing media for low-information Americans.

Haven't you noticed that the majority of his pardons are for drug dealers, not enforcers.

Okay, remind me again WHY we should honour this man for anything he ever did in the White House? All those paintings and "accolades" are being bestowed on this guy who has the blood of thousands of American soldiers on his hands, not to mention the blood of countless Iraquis who died and are dying because of this occupation. Oh, and don't forget, his thirst for death when he was governor of Texas too. Oh yeah, and then there's Valerie Plame and his "I don't like leakers" lie, and the lies he told Americans in order to get into Iraq after September 11.....a country that didn't have anything to do with that day. Oh yeah....and his thing about the constitution and the "legalities" surrounding it. Not to mention the south during and after Hurricane Katrina. And now the pardons. And we have to honour this jerk? Other countries' citizens would have taken him out and hanged him for doing this to their country.

I bet Bush's pardon of Isaac Toussie won't generate a fraction of the heat Clinton's pardon of Rich generated......not even a fraction....because this criminal administration will be resolved of everything!
