The French practically invented public displays of affection, so why not take a closer look at the country's first couple, President Nicolas Sarkozy and his lovely bride Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. The couple went public a little over a year ago, shortly after the president's divorce from his second wife Cecilia, and tied the knot less than two months later. Bruni-Sarkozy recently revealed that her February 2nd wedding was a quickie, and that the couple had decided to tie the knot only two days earlier.

Of the very short engagement, Bruni-Sarkozy told David Letterman last month that she moved "pretty quickly, yes, but it's not so comfortable to be dating when you're the President of France. Maybe if he was a doctor or lawyer we would have been engaged a little longer."

This week the couple is traveling in Brazil where the First Lady, who has dated Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Donald Trump, gave an interview to Brazilian Marie Claire, in which she declared "I can no longer seduce because I love my husband. I don't want to hurt him. I am no longer a man-eater." She went on to say, "We are newlyweds. We don't say much, we kiss."

Oh, the French.

Apparently those longer teeth do not improve the man-eater proclivities.

The President's ancestors weren't French. He's a child of immigrant ancestory who saw what France offered, worked & earned what he has.

she is "jolie laide."

I'm sure someone will protest the comparison, but there are moments when her facial features remind me of those gelflings from The Dark Crystal.

Most over-used word of 2008 - hate.

Can we find a way to post without mentioning it at all?

Why is this site celebrating right wingers?

I like Sarcozy because unlike most spineless American politicians he embraced his adultery, not resign or cover it up.

But his politics, especially for France and the EU are dangerous.

His beautiful wife (who really wasn't that good looking when she was a model) should excuse him.

Yet ,Sarkosy- while right winger- surprisingly emerged as a world class leader who displayed both reason and courage.

If Sarkozy were American, the right wingnuts would be characterizing him as a scr.eaming liberal....

I want to have a suitably "open-minded" attitude toward the French leader, but everytime I see his picture I think about the wife and children he left behind. Such behavior does not, to me, indicate any suitability for national or international leadership.

He's not a Santa Claus or a monk. And France is not se.x.ua-ll-y pre-o-ccupied America.

Mitterrand was a good leader and he had a full-time mistress who was honored at his funeral.
So was Clinton, JFK, Thomas Jefferson.

The thing is, his second wife apparently dumped him for another man. The marriage had been on the rocks for quite sometime. Sarkozy started dating Bruni *after* his second wife ran off.

As for Sarkozy's children...his eldest son, all of 22, just got married himself!

I think all parties involved are okay!

I really don't like him but his Cecilia pretty much left him, rather than the other way around. He went to great lengths to get her back and so they ended up presenting (on the face of it) a united front during the Presidential election here in France (as did his main rival, Mme Royale).

Alors que le couple présidentiel était en pleine action, Carla dit : "Oh Oouuiiiiii, vas-y, dis-moi des choses sales !"

Et Sarko l'Américain répondit : "La cuisine, la salle de bain, le salon... "

Correct me if I'm wrong, since my French is somewhat dicey. But Carla said talk some (bed) room talk to me and Sarko thought she meant, talk about rooms to me (and responded appropriately)?

coverage Sarko got
He used his private life to gain interest and leverage
Thats a "No No" in France, keep your private life ...private...

it is so good to see people in power expressing affection to someone

not looking like compartmentalized weirdos

just enjoying each other

no doubt
the soap opera will come later

but for some reason I do like these two and hope they can keep their act together
and don't let the office make them corrupt

This kind of thing is completely impossible in American politics. Witness the fate of Poor Eliot Spitzer (although Clinton, at least, survived his second term....)
