I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The New York Post reports that the Clear Stream Avenue Elementary School will not be changing its name to honor President-elect Barack Obama.

Cristobal Stewart, a trustee of the school district in Valley Stream, first broached the idea of renaming the Clear Stream Avenue Elementary School in November to commemorate Obama's electoral triumph.

But the plan was met with loud resistance at a Nov. 24 hearing. Town residents and parents argued that the existing name, in place since 1924, represented a long and proud tradition that shouldn't be tinkered with.

In November, another Long Island school changed its name to Barack Obama Elementary School. According to the network, the name change was inspired by the school's proximity to Hofstra University, where the final presidential debate was held.

I was upset when they changed the name of Washington National Airport.

just keep calling it that-washington national, instead of the other name.

Why rename an existing school that has been there since 1924 when we can build a brand new one in 2009 and name it after President Obama?

Build a new one with what? The trillions gone to an illegal war? The billions bailing out financial idiots? If they don't want to change their name, they shouldn't, but don't give them an alternative from which they can't possibly benefit. They've already got to deal with No Child Left Behind.

So it is better for the school to be named after the street it resides on than after the historic election of the first African-American President?
Puleease!

He's not been sworn in yet.
It's kinda like renaming the Tri-borough bridge the RFK bridge. What exactly did RFK do? He wasn't president, just a lowly senator.

I agree with your point, however the RFK analogy is not a good example. There are plenty RFK named elementary schools all over the country..

After googling a bit , I understand that this is a current NYC of renaming the Tri-borough bridge.

------
Oh and RFK was also the Attorney General of the United States as well as a Senator from New York and up until his assassination , a viable candidate form POTUS.

public buildings are named for more than just presidents. RFK stood for peace and equality, MLK stood for all that is good in people. Public buildings, schools, etc. have been named for explorers, scientists, atheletes, humanitarians, etc. Your argument does not hold water.

Yes, it is, if that's the school's name.

Why is that such a problem?

oh please it's not as if he asked them to name it after him. A@@es just want some da.m.n publicity.

I hope more schools get named after Obama. And airports and federal buildings and monuments and .....

Speaking of naming things after presidents...did the ballot initiative pass renaming the sewage treatment plant in San Francisco after George Bush?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:53 AM on 12/27/2008

I think they decided naming the sewage after him would be more appropriate.Gotta go,must take a bush.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:49 AM on 12/27/2008

The facility is a very high-tech, green progressive sewer treatment plant and nobody wanted bush to get credit for something he would have vetoed. We felt a higher respect for our scum bucket to name it after such a scum bucket.

Um, hasn't accomplished anything yet? He's managed to get elected to the highest office in the land by a convincing margin in a nation that enslaved people who look like him and forbade them to drink from water fountains and sit next to whites on buses at the time he was born. If he doesn't do another thing, he's earned the right to have a school and anything else named after him.

heck, he was one of the few voices 100% right about the Iraq war. That makes him an unsung heroe in my book.

And yet he voted for every single appropriations bill to keep the war going. Let's see him actually end the war and bring some more of this change he promised before naming schools after him.

I never heard him speak against the war. He certainly didn't have any information to base his decision on if, in fact, he did state his opposition publicly. Since he was a state senator it really didn't matter what he thought. However, look at his votes in the U.S.Senate.

Well, you are in for some disappointment. Haven't you figured out that Barack Hussein Obama hasn't cared about what you anti-war fools have thought since the primary ended? Once Hillary dropped out, he basically said "Thanks guys, for carrying me thus far. However, now I have to win the votes of normal people." Expect no concessions from here on. Also hero doesn't have an 'e' unless you are a student at Dan Quayle Elementary!

Plus also got two major laws passed, sponsored over 100 bills, was the first African American President of the Harvard Law Review, wrote two bestselling books, turned down lucrative jobs to be a Community Organizer, Civil Rights Lawyer and a Teacher of Constitutional Law.

I'd like to hear who here has more accomplishments that not only help change a negative perception on their racial group, but also have changed so many lives for the better of all races through his work in Chicago communities.

Imagine some idiots changed the name of their school to GWB high school in the wake of September 11th. Schools and districts are entitled to changing their name, and hopefully they can live with my scorn for re-naming themselves for a president-elect who, so far, has authored like literally 12 pieces of legislation. Go you.

There will be plenty of babys, schools and medical centers, being named after Obama. If he gets an aiport or a few highways named after him, I'll be impressed. Those honors normally go to Republicans - i.e. John Wayne Airport. ~blush~

Actually, considering the infrastructure he intends to rebuild, the entire country may be housed by buildings and roads named after Barack Obama.

Nice.

GWB did somethings...........disasterously, and was honoured on several occasions, and those that honoured him did so without a hint of shame or embarrassment.
I just hope that, if they name roads after Obama, and they choose the same neighbourhoods as they did for MLK, it's because Obama brought those neighbourhoods up to the same standards as the "whiter" neighbourhoods.
I always thought that if "they" wanted to honour Dr. King, and name roads in the ghetto's after him, then spend money in the neighbourhoods to give those people a decent standard of living.
My hope is that President Obama can achieve this. If he does, they can rename a state after him as far as I'm concerned. He's already done more than GWB ever did, he's given us hope.

There are better things to worry about in school than changing the name of it, like the quality of the education in a school and the safety of a school.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:32 PM on 12/26/2008

I have to say, I kinda agree. I'm a Obama supporter, and wish him and our country all the success in the world, but the guy hasn't really accomplished anything yet. Let's not jump the gun by naming things after him just now.

Just being elected as the first African-American President is enough to warrant schools being named after him.
Have you ever been to Valley Stream, NY? It has a very high African-American population.
