WASILLA, Alaska -- The mother of Bristol Palin's boyfriend sent text messages discussing drug transactions less than a month after the young woman's mother, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was nominated as the Republican vice presidential candidate, according to court documents filed this week.

An affidavit from an Alaska state trooper, filed Monday, states that Sherry L. Johnston referred in her messages to two police informants to "coffee" as a code for the drug OxyContin.

Johnston, 42, was arrested on felony drug charges last week after state troopers served a search warrant at her Wasilla home. She allegedly sold OxyContin tablets to the informants on three occasions this fall, the affidavit states. Police said two of the meetings were recorded by a hidden camera and a microphone.

Johnston is the mother of Levi Johnston, 18. Sarah Palin announced in September that her daughter Bristol, also 18, was pregnant and that Johnston was the father. Their child was due to be born Dec. 18, her grandfather Chuck Heath told the Anchorage Daily News recently.

Authorities say the case against Sherry Johnston began in the second week of September, when drug investigators intercepted a package containing 179 OxyContin pills. That led to the arrest of the suspects, who agreed to be informants.

According to the affidavit, Johnston sent a text message to one informant Oct. 1, writing: "Hey, my phones are tapped and reporters and god knows who else is always following me and the family so no privacy. I will let u no when I can go for cof."

The trooper's affidavit indicates that Sarah Palin's candidacy factored into the investigation, with state officials delaying execution of a search warrant until this month, when Johnston was "no longer under the protection or surveillance of the Secret Service."

Oh, so we would have criminal in-laws close to the White House (since they delayed it so Palin the Pathological Liar had a chance to win), but I guess that's preferable to Blacks being there....

You find it unwise to spend tax dollars to take drug dealers off the street? Would you be saying the same thing if Johnston was a person of color and dealing drugs?

Is this 8 degrees to Sarah Palin? Geraldine Ferraro's son, Bill Clinton's brother and many many other immediate family members of political figures from both parties have had problems with using and/or selling drugs. I know some will experience schadenfreude over this situtaion involving the governor's daughter's future mother-in-law. I for one find it another sad chapter in our culture.

Relatives that the above-mentioned had no choice in selecting is perfectly understandable. We all have relatives that we cannot be held responsible for, and they are our relatives by birthright.

To allow your children to CHOOSE to associate and fraternize with people of seriously questionable background is a whole nother thing and is why her judgement is called into question.

Wasilla is a small rinky dink town, people know who the drug dealer's family and who isn't. Yet Palin allowed her minor age daughter to hang with the boy and ergo his family.

Excuse me, but why would the mother of some guy that Sarah Palin's daughter is dating be under the protection of the secret service? Did this also apply to the relatives of the friends of Joe Biden's kids? Or did the white house just send them in there to clamp down on things?

We should de-criminalize all this drug stuff. Someono wants to screw up their life, let them. Smoke grass. Sure, go ahead. Use heroin, it's your life. The money we save from not having a massive federal, state and local police force trying to bust some dumb broad or some hopped up inner city resident can be used to build medical centers. Think of all the money we will save in emptying out the prisons. De-criminalize it. The war on drugs is just another war we lost. Deal with it.

Absolutely, we need to use the 'palling around' guilt-by-association mode here. Palin made that very clear in her campaign, so it's entirely appropriate to use it.

And there is one extremely good reason to use guilt-by-association in this case: Bristol is supposedly marrying the woman's son. That goes FAR CLOSER TO HER FAMILY than Obama being on a community board with Ayers.

BTW, you can friend Ayers on Facebook. I recommend doing so. He's a great guy.

As long as you include all of Obama's associations against him and all of Caroline's against her, go for it. Seems to be a futile exercise to me but if it keeps you off the streets, I'm all for it.

WOW-- should we do GUILT BY ASSOCIATION here? If Palin was "pallin' around" with her drug dealing soon-to-be mother-in-law, does that make Palin a drug dealer???

You already have by suggestion and THAT WAS the point of the headline.

Yet, people here have big issues with PE O being interviewed for two hours over Blago.

They should have given the story a Palinesque title -- ie:
"SARAH PALIN PALLING AROUND WITH DRUG DEALERS!"

Like the Chappaquiddick paper should have had an article about Caroline and her personal relations with Teddy? Or the Chicago papers should have articles about Obama supporting and orchestrating the election of Blago...or, wait, they did do that, didn't they?

I'm no Republican but if you're going to judge Palin by her associations then you have to judge Democrats by theirs.

I think the point here is that Palin herself was the #1 person yelling "Guilt by Association" when it was about someone else. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:59 AM on 12/27/2008

Palin thought it was fine to judge Obama by his associates. In fact, her only campaign speech was about that. So, yes, Palin should be judged by her associates. She made it very clear that those were her standards.

Teddy's her uncle for goodness sake. What are you suggesting? From Blago's own mouth, we know Obama and his people wouldn't play any of his games. Supporting a fellow democrat's election is not the same as orchestrating that election. Choose your words more carefully, please.

You already do! lol. What, you don't like a fair fight?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:14 AM on 12/27/2008

So when the investigation into Sarah Palin's abuse of power comes out with a report during the election it's called 'partisan politics', but when a normal investigation into a family member's drug dealings is delayed its considered 'the right thing to do.'

OK, I get it now.

The hypocrisy of Republicans knows no bounds. Actually, the hypocrisy of most religious people knows no bounds. Bill Maher made that point and then some over Catholics not walking out of their churches over pedophilia, but expecting Obama to walk out of his church over a few statements made by Wright.

I think the scenario already in place answers your question. They had the same facts during the campaign and sat on them. Whether or not Gov. Palin had any knowledge is irrelevant.
