NEW YORK — Caroline Kennedy emerged from weeks of near-silence Friday about her bid for a Senate seat by saying that after a lifetime of closely guarded privacy, she felt compelled to answer the call to service issued by her father a generation ago.

She said two events shaped her decision to ask Gov. David Paterson 11 days ago to consider her for the position if Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is confirmed as secretary of state: the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and her work for Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

In her first sit-down interview since she emerged as a Senate hopeful, the 51-year-old daughter of President John F. Kennedy cited her father's legacy in explaining her decision to seek to serve alongside her uncle Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy.

"Many people remember that spirit that President Kennedy summoned forth," she said. "Many people look to me as somebody who embodies that sense of possibility. I'm not saying that I am anything like him, I'm just saying there's a spirit that I think I've grown up with that is something that means a tremendous amount to me."

She also credited her mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with giving her the courage to seek the job.

"I think my mother ... made it clear that you have to live life by your own terms and you have to not worry about what other people think and you have to have the courage to do the unexpected," she said.

Since Kennedy expressed interest in the job, she has faced sometimes sharp criticism that she cut in line ahead of politicians with more experience and has acted as if she were entitled to it because of her political lineage. More than a half-dozen elected officials are vying for the seat, including New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and several members of Congress.

Kennedy said that she had long been encouraged to seek public office and that Clinton's expected departure from the Senate offered the perfect opportunity to follow in the footsteps of her father, two uncles and cousins.

"Going into politics is something people have asked me about forever," a relaxed Kennedy said as she ate a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and sipped coffee at a diner in Manhattan. "When this opportunity came along, which was sort of unexpected, I thought, `Well, maybe now. How about now?'"

She said she realizes she will have to prove herself and "work twice as hard as anybody else." She acknowledged, "I am an unconventional choice," but added: "We're starting to see there are many ways into public life and public service."

Since Kennedy's name first surfaced as a possible replacement for Clinton, her advisers have shielded her from the media, with the exception of a few brief interviews on a swing through upstate New York and a visit to Harlem with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Some commentators likened her to Sarah Palin in the way her dealings with the media were being carefully managed.

She agreed to sit down for interviews Friday with The Associated Press and NY1 television.

Kennedy acknowledged that her recent time in the limelight _ after a relatively private life as a wife, mother of three, best-selling author and fundraiser in New York City _ had not gone entirely smoothly.

But she said she had turned down interview requests and tried not to appear to be campaigning for the job because she knew that the choice rested solely with the Democratic governor.

"I was trying to respect the process. It is not a campaign," she said. "It was misinterpreted. If I were to be selected, I understand public servants have to be accessible."

Asked about criticism from other politicians and members of the public that she seems to regard herself as entitled to the job as a member of America's most storied political dynasty, she said: "Everybody that knows me knows I haven't really lived that way. ... Nobody's entitled to anything, certainly not me."

Kennedy chuckled when she was asked if her brother, the late John F. Kennedy Jr., had ever suggested she run for public office some day. "He usually thought about himself," she said. "He would be laughing his head off at seeing what's going on right now."

She also was asked to explain why she failed to vote in a number of elections since registering in New York City in 1988, including in 1994 when Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan was up for re-election for the seat she hopes to take over.

"I was really surprised and dismayed by my voting record," she said. "I'm glad it's been brought to my attention."

Former New York Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, who urged Paterson last weekend to consider experienced members of Congress for the job, said she was glad to hear Kennedy was willing to "work twice as hard as others."

"I think it's great she understands she will have a tougher time," Ferraro said. "I don't know if she can work twice as hard because having been a member of Congress I know they work 24-7. They already work hard."

What is all the fuss regarding experience when Obama himself has little experience. CK is over 30, a U.S. Citizen, a resident of the state of New York - you don't need any more experience than that to be a U.S. Senator. I'm sorry, but after Obama the American people have voiced that experience is not a requirement. You can buy drugs and use drugs and still be President. You can not be eligible for a Security Clearance and still be President. IMO - CK is more than qualified to be a Senator and I think she will do a fantastic job and I support her.

Kennedy meets the legal minimum to be a senator. But in terms of achievements, she does not exceed any of the other people under discussion for the position.

"I'll work twice as hard." That sounds like some kid cramming before finals.

There are people who've tested and developed their skills in enacting legislation and reaching out to listen to their constituents. There are people who have actual accomplishments, not just positions. Why should they be passed over for the sake of this brand?

Wrong. She headed Obama's VP vetting committee and gave us Biden. That's more than one day's work, so you're statement is factually WRONG.

Doesn't vote, doesn't contribute to democrats, doesn't willingly disclose her finances, doesn't grant media interviews, doesn't, doesn't, ......, doesn't represent the best interests of NYers. David just say no to the privileged elite looking for another handout. Just say no to Caroline.

I just listened to a 2:16 minute clip of Caroline Kennedy discussing her prospects where she said "you know" twenty-one times. I'd tell her not to quit her day job…if she had one.

Kennedy should be working twice as hard right now to show that she has a grasp of the issues impacting upstate New Yorkers. She isn't.

The voters of New York are twice removed from the decision on Hillary's Senate seat. The person will be selected by someone who wasn't actually elected governor but stepped in when Spitzer resigned. Oh, well. So much for the voter. That's the way the system works.

David- if he does not pick Caroline will not be elected gov.---- whoever is advising him politically -must be a secret republican who wants a rudy as gov.-----

Wrong. If he picks her he won't be elected governor. No one I know in NYC wants her, and we're all Democrats.

Working twice as hard for her won't be too hard, given that she hasn't had a real job in her adult life.

First of all, who cares what Ferraro has to say, she is urging Paterson, etc., give me a break. This is one old lady who needs to go away quietly. Who cares about her opinion?
Now, as far as Caroline Kennedy is concerned, she expects to slide right in because of the the name recognition, not fair, sorry. She has kept out of the limelight her entire life thanks to the guidance of her mother. However, if JFK was around, he had completely different views about this than Jackie O and he was right! Now, many people are criticizing her in her approach. Out of no where, she would like to be Senator from NY, not really fair.
She will probably get it. She is worth 430M, you would think she would try to get ride of the dry skin the Kennedy women are cursed with. All that money, she needs a facial everyday. She will look like Maria Schiver's Mom soon. She is 51 years old now and in a few years if she does nothing for her skin, she will look 70 years old.
She desperately needs a sharp hairdresser, she desperately needs a new clothes designer, and she definitely needs a makeup artist; there is no excuse for why she doesn't make a better and more professtional appearance and lastly she needs to get her teeth fixed and a full face lift to get rid of those Kennedy pronounced lines.

She has had braces-- it is the kennedy toothiness-- her skin is fine at 51-- I saw her at an event with full makeup and she is just a gorgeous girl for her age---clothes and jewelery are very classy-- and if people cannot recognize a class act-- then that means they have no class---

Can't agree more with the other responses to your post. Caroline has both inner and outer beauty which shines as bright as the sun. Her intelligence, compassion, and willingness to serve others is that which makes her beautiful as a person. It is very sad that you obviously have low self esteem as exemplified by your superficial observations.

The negative energy flowing against her by some out there in my opinion is a mere result of her supporting Obama and not HRC! Much like the whisper campaign employed by the Clinton campaign against Obama, it seem quite apparent the same tactic is being used against Caroline. What next are they going to pull her church sermons for review. It speaks volumes that Hillary has not come forward to put a stop to this. I mean who cares if she was not inspired to vote!!?? Maybe there was no one on the ballot worth voting for or she was taking care of her young children. New York is as shady as Illinois!!!

This is EXACTLY why.

So-called "PUMAs" are raging against a Progressive like Caroline Kennedy, being apologists for Bible Spice PALIN of all people, and even promoting loves-his-liquor Repub. Rep. Peter "it's all over but for the counting, and we'll take care of the counting" King arm in arm with Bush in 2000. Some are shilling for "shuck and jive" anti-Obama "Dem" Cuomo too.

Don't forget, HRC is a Clintonite, a Repub-lite Dem, the ones that gave us, even promoted, the Iraq War Resolution that ki//ed over 4000 American troops for nothing AND these Clinton fans are forgetting the case of election fundraising fraud case before the CA Supreme Court against Bill and Hillary. I guess these New Yorkers love them some corrupt politicians.

I canvassed for Obama a lot longer than Caroline Kennedy did, and I'm not pushing for her. She's qualified to run for STATE senate, but appointment to US senate offends me when there are so many people who've demonstrated their commitment by achieving things.

Cuomo is one better candidate. Others are Byron Brown, Carolyn Maloney, Elizabeth Holtzman, Thomas Suozzi, Nydia Velazquez, Kirsten Gillibrand, Steve Israel. There's no need to go with a neophyte. I don't feel obligated to wait through her learning curve.

I can't believe some of you dems have the nerve to compare this woman to Palin. After all her family has been through, her father, uncle, and brother all died young and her mother is gone, and Teddy Kennedy is real sick, after all they have done for Obama, and she gets treated like this? I mean I can see if you would rather someone else get the just but this is only for the "senate" not the Presidency like Sarah Palin ran for. Most people who start out in the senate don't have much experience, but guess what? Caroline Kennedy has been around politcs all of her life, and she said Obama inspired her to serve. I still think she needs to reveal more about herself but for her to get blasted this much by the same people who voted for Mr. Hope, is kind of shocking to say the least.

The government does not belong to the Obama machine. The Senate is not a family country club where you get a seat because your dad was killed 45 years ago or because your uncle is member and you are now a bored empty nest housewife. The fact that Caroline is even being considered is an insult to the people of New York. New York needs an experienced legislator with Upstate credibility if the Democrats have any chance of holding the seat in 2010.

From a psychological standpoint, I can understand why she avoided politics for so long, knowing as a young child that her Father was brutally murdered in cold blood! I pray that Caroline Kennedy will be appointed to Clinton's senate seat. I strongly believe her endorsement along with Ted and other Kennedy's marked an important turning point in the campaign for Obama. Caroline Kennedy is an attorney, a member of the New York and Washington DC bar associations. She is a Radcliffe, Harvard and Columbia Law School grad. She co-wrote a couple of books on civil liberties, In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights In Action (1991) and The Right to Privacy (1995). She was director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the the New York City Department of Education, and helped raise over 65 million dollars for the New York City public schools. I believe she possesses the same ability for greatness in service to our country that her Father did.

She never practiced law.

George W. Bush went to Yale and Harvard.

Who knows how much of a co-written book she wrote?

Her job with the Office of Strategic Partnerships was part-time, requiring a commitment of less than one day a week.

Maybe she is talented and committed. But she's got to demonstrate that by winning an election before I'll take her seriously. There are people who are more qualified, more committed, who've demonstrated their skill and commitment by actual achievements.

I love how many people here are lambasting Kennedy as a return to the Bush-style voting of political families. Apparently you guys have no idea about New York politics - we're talking the son of Basil Paterson potentially appointing the daughter of John F Kennedy, to the seat that was last held by the wife of Bill Clinton. Last I checked NY politics is just as bad as Chicago - its 150% lineage based and when you get politicians that people genuinely like (like Pete King or Tom Suozzi, people who i genuinely dislike), they constantly get shafted. Ditch this lineage based bullshit New York.

Well considering Clinton has said she won't give up the seat until she's confirmed as Secretary of State I say give Caroline Secretary of State ... Clinton has already shown herself to be a headache even before she gets in the job ... and frankly I'd just as soon see her stay in New York.

Maybe her and Feraro can start a "bitter" woman club ...

Which by the way is the number one reason for Caroline not being appointed as Ambassador to the Court of St. James. No one in their right mind could think of Caroline working under Clinton.

Clinton working under Caroline maybe.

Today's Gallup poll names Hillary Clinton the most admired woman in America for the seventh year in a row. Even Republicans admire Hillary for her tenacity and smarts. Hillary has taken everything that was ever thrown at her and she won't give up. She won 18 million votes in the Democratic primary and gave Obama a run for his money. Even Obama was impressed, he just named her Secretary of State.
