As If Things Weren't Bad Enough, Russian Professor Predicts End Of US

MOSCOW -- For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few took his argument -- that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. -- very seriously. Now he's found an eager audience: Russian state media.

In recent weeks, he's been interviewed as much as twice a day about his predictions. "It's a record," says Prof. Panarin. "But I think the attention is going to grow even stronger."

This guy has a fundamental misunderstanding of Americans. The idea that America might split up is ridiculous enough, but the concept of Americans allowing themselves to fall under the "influence" of China, Mexico, and Europe is the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Based on past recent experience, it's been Eastern Europe and the USSR that have been undergoing boundary flux and, with the recent multiple devaluations of the ruble, a more likely scenario will be the disintegration of Russia.

Had Saakashvili been more adept last summer, Georgia might have nibbled South Ossetia and Abkhazia completely away. Other regions, such as Chechnya might be ripe to follow.
