In this Sept. 25, 2008 file photo, Herman and Roma Rosenblat pose for a photo in their North Miami Beach, Fla. home. Rosenblat's "Angel at the Fence" had been scheduled to come out in February, but Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), withdrew the memoir following allegations by scholars, friends and family members that his tale was untrue. NEW YORK — It's the latest story that touched, and betrayed, the world.

"Herman Rosenblat and his wife are the most gentle, loving, beautiful people," literary agent Andrea Hurst said Sunday, anguishing over why she, and so many others, were taken by Rosenblat's story of love born on opposite sides of a barbed-wire fence at a concentration camp.

"I question why I never questioned it. I believed it; it was an incredible, hope-filled story."

On Saturday, Berkley Books canceled Rosenblat's memoir, "Angel at the Fence," after he acknowledged that he and his wife did not meet, as they had said for years, at a sub-camp of Buchenwald, where she allegedly sneaked him apples and bread. The book was supposed to come out in February.

Rosenblat, 79, has been married to the former Roma Radzicky for 50 years, since meeting her on a blind date in New York. In a statement issued Saturday through his agent, he described himself as an advocate of love and tolerance who falsified his past to better spread his message.

"I wanted to bring happiness to people," said Rosenblat, who now lives in the Miami area. "I brought hope to a lot of people. My motivation was to make good in this world."

Rosenblat's believers included not only his agent and his publisher, but Oprah Winfrey, film producers, journalists, family members, school children and strangers online who ignored, or didn't know about, the warnings from scholars and skeptics that his story didn't make sense.

Other Holocaust memoirists have devised greater fantasies. Misha Defonseca, author of "Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years," pretended she was a Jewish girl who lived with wolves during the war, when she was actually a non-Jew who lived, without wolves, in Belgium.

Historical records prove Rosenblat was indeed at Buchenwald and other camps.

"How sad that he felt he had to embellish a life of surviving the Holocaust and of being married for half a century," said Holocaust scholar Michael Berenbaum.

The damage is broad. Publishing, the most trusting of industries, has again been burned by a memoir that fact-checking might have prevented. Berkley is an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), which in March pulled Margaret B. Jones' "Love and Consequences" after the author acknowledged she had invented her story of gang life in Los Angeles. Winfrey fell, as she did with James Frey, for a narrative of suffering and redemption better suited for television than for history.

"If I ever take on another memoir, they're going to have to prove everything, every line," Hurst says. "From now on, I may just stick to basic fiction and nonfiction."

The damage is deep. Scholars and fellow survivors fear that Rosenblat's fabrications will only encourage doubts about the Holocaust.

"I am very worried because many of us speak to thousands of students each year," says Sidney Finkel, a longtime friend of Rosenblat's and a fellow survivor. "We go before audiences. We tell them a story and now some people will question what I experienced."

"This was not Holocaust education but miseducation," Ken Waltzer, director of Jewish Studies at Michigan State University, said in a statement.

"Holocaust experience is not heartwarming, it is heart rending. All this shows something about the broad unwillingness in our culture to confront the difficult knowledge of the Holocaust," Waltzer said. "All the more important then to have real memoirs that tell of real experience in the camps."

Among the fooled, at least the partially fooled, was Berenbaum, former director of the United States Holocaust Research Institute at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. Berenbaum had been asked to read the manuscript by film producer Harris Salomon, who still plans an adaptation of the book.

Berenbaum's tentative support _ "Crazier things have happened," he told The Associated Press last fall _ was cited by the publisher as it initially defended the book. Berenbaum now says he saw factual errors, including Rosenblat's description of Theresienstadt, the camp from which he was eventually liberated, but didn't think of challenging the love story.

"There's a limit to what I can verify, because I was not there," he says. "I can verify the general historical narrative, but in my research I rely upon the survivors to present the specifics of their existence with integrity. When they don't, they destroy so much and they ruin so much, and that's terrible."

"I was burned," he added. "And I have to read books more skeptically because I was burned."

Vietnam vets can render for you memories of being abused by ungrateful protestors at the airport on homecoming, and these are almost certainly false. (They didn't come home on schedule by troop conveyance; the tour was individual rather than by unit so they came back that way.) I know of a Green Beret medic who tells anyone who will listen he was consulted by Stallone for the Rambo series and also by the writers of the Broadway show Miss Saigon, and 60 Minutes interviews him extensively. I am wondering if horror does not work as an agent on a romantic imagination?

So, a couple of CC survivors fabricate a touching love story in order to make "ends".

1. They did live in that part of the world.
2. They lived there at that time.
3. They loved each other and eventually got married.

That pretty much meets the Hollywood "based on a true story" standard.
What's the problem?

The problem is that the story is false. Rosenblat should have written a novel (the kind of writing most Hollywood love story movies are based on) and not claimed it was autobiographical. It's that claim, I think, that bothers people, not the story itself....

Dear family and friends, please stop me before I go on Oprah and lie to the whole world about a story you never belived.

Oprah ought to public disavow the story and also that hateful, hateful screed, "The Secret", while she's at it.

@ goodog The Secret is just a way of thinking. I see the secret as alot more safe and sensible than the bible or any other religious text. Think positively and positive things will come. That's it..what is so shady about that? Oprah is not a card reader, it's not her job to jump into a time portal and go back in the past and see if someone's Holocaust story is true. It is easy to lie about anything if it's from a literary point of view and especially if it's a love story. I just don't want to hear all the Oprah haters blaming her for this being a lie, I know how much some angry whites who hate her love to gang up on her everytime some guest lies which has been about 3 times in 20 years. She has an incredible record, and she has helped bring READING books back into the mainstream in this country. So please cut her some slack!!!!

I couldn't care less about this as it relates to Oprah, but to promote this "The Secret" nonsense is truly deplorable.

Scam artists are welcome to the funds they can bilk from the idiot world at large, but they don't need any help from you.

See, Oprah should have known better about the Secret. She's been preaching the contents for years. There was nothing new of startling in that book, and yet that's how it was presented and it made a fortune. It's called repackaging.

I used to "hate" Oprah. Then, a few years ago when I was working at a bookstore, I suddenly without warning dealt with several days of a rush on One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. About the twentieth time I sold a copy of that amazing novel to a frumpy housewife, I found out that Oprah had recommended it on her show.

I can't really say anything bad about someone who uses her clout to make a sudden best-seller (among TV watchers, yet!) of one of my favorite novels...

Just what the unspeakable episode of genocide needed: a sexy love story.

What he should have said was: "My motivation was to make good MONEY in this world"

Fraudulent Holocaust memoirs? Try Jerzy Kosinsky's "The Painted Bird" and "Binjamin Wilkomirski's" (not his real name) "Fragments" (the latter borrows from the former). The exploitation of real Jewish suffering continues.

Case in point, regarding this dispute. It's not exactly established fact that The Painted Bird is "fraudulent," is it...? But it IS established "fact," that The Painted Bird is a literary masterpiece of the highest order.

Kosinski wrote a series of five putative "memoirs," all of which were partially predicated, on playing a game with the reader, about how much of these novels the reader attributes to Kosinski's "real life" experiences. But it's easy, it is all TOO easy, to refer to them as "fraudulent," if you want to.

How "true" they are, or not, could never dampen their genius. These are great books, period.

More great fact-checking. People rush to make a buck and are not thorough enough to corroborate something. His motivation was to make good in the world.... by propagating lies. Should have worked for Bush/Cheney.

Well, its a fact that he was in Buchenwald as a teenager. That is indisputable.

The love story may or may not be true, but his only mistake that I can see was not to present it as a novel, "based on my life".

I don't see what harm his story causedd. (And NO similarity to Bush/Cheney who -should- be in prison....)

Ah, that would be taking a kernal of known truth [hundreds of stories to pick from in the old testament for this exercise], and then twist and embelish the story until it promotes your agenda.

Only a naive or willfully ignorant person accepts the old testament as being historically accurate.

True that. Old pattern, but intellectually dishonest just the same.

Oprah has been taken in more than once by her predilection for fairy tales that hew to a certain format and celebrate redemption. The real world is more Fyodor Dostoevsky than P.G. Wodehouse.

No matter how good his intentions were, he is trying to cash in on a lie. That cheapens his experience and him. This is not a way to feel better about the holocaust. It is rather sad.

Personal note to Oprah:

Apparently, none of us are as of yet perfect.

Why not humanely continue with these people and create resolution and healing for all of those involved? Why not create a safe space for them to remember and be able to speak about their personal truthful horrors that they did actually experience?

Most people lie Oprah; will you be able to follow B

Seriously, let's cut this guy some slack. He originally entered a contest with a fib that took on a life of it's own. Reflect on your own life; most people embellish about some aspect of their own lives.

I am sure that like the rest of us, both he and his wife wished that this was a true story.

During the sixties, I was introduced to several survivors and then was taken to see Auschwitz. None of us can possibly imagine how mind bending that experience was for the survivors.

And for God's sake, stop with the anti-S. here.

Their story was obviously a lie from day-one. Why anyone believed them was beyond me. Apples being shared? Come on! When someone needs more sadness in life as that man had, and survived, there's sickness, too; why embellish horror. But, el spousa went along with it, and once again Oprah, too.

Oprah might start reading the Penguin Classics, and let everything else drop for awhile. One mistake, for someone who perceives leading the public, with her doctor, decorator, fitness guru, and choice in books, and love, Oprah would be far better off just running her empire, and let us make our own choices.
