As the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza worsens, numerous news organizations have looked at how the crisis will challenge President-elect Barack Obama's plans for Middle East peace.

Bloomberg writes that recent events have spoiled Obama's plans for a quiet renewal of the peace process. But it also gives Obama a chance to move things in a new direction.

"The president-elect's foreign-policy brain trust very much hoped for a quiet backdrop against which to re-inaugurate the Middle East peace process," said Rogan Kersh, associate dean of New York University's Wagner School of Public Service. "That backdrop instead now looks jagged, chaotic and loud."

...

If Obama responds to the situation by taking an active role, it would contrast with the hands-off policy of Bush. The president disengaged from Middle East peacemaking until the last year of his administration, then failed to hammer out an accord as Israel dealt with political upheaval and the Palestinians remained divided.

"The problem is for eight years, there's been no adult supervision, which is what the United States can do," said James Zogby, president of the Washington-based Arab American Institute.

According to Time, Israeli leaders had hoped to put the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on "the backburner" of the new Administration, with Iran as their main focus. That no longer seems likely.

So, when he sits down at his desk in the Oval Office in January, President Barack Obama will be confronted with compelling evidence of the failure of the Bush Administration's and Israel's policy on Hamas rule in Gaza -- and with the urgency of bringing some fresh ideas to the table.

Diplomats tell the Wall Street Journal, however, that Obama will be in a very difficult situation. One former State Department adviser says the violence will only "reduce already slim odds for peace."

And the New York Times points out that for now, Obama is deferring to the current president.

Since his election, Mr. Obama has said little specific about his foreign policy -- in contrast to more expansive remarks about the economy. He and his advisers have deferred questions -- critics could say, ducked them -- by saying that until Jan. 20, only President Bush would speak for the nation as president and commander in chief. "The fact is that there is only one president at a time," David Axelrod, Mr. Obama's senior adviser, told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday, reiterating a phrase that has become a mantra of the transition. "And that president now is George Bush."

Israel's disproportional / collective punishment aproach and the US unconditional support of Israel have only made matter worse.
Obama must break away from US's past policies and approach it with a fresh direction and a sense of urgency.
Otherwise, we would be still talking about this crisis 10 or 30 years from now.

Bush Jr has abandoned the presidency, except for the parties and special favors he can do for his friends and colleagues.

America basically has no president at this time and, as Biden predicted, the a$$hats of the world will rush in to take advantage of it, pulling whatever BS they want until Obam is inaugurated.

The Jews have learned that when it comes to their own existence, nobody else gives a damn. If Israel is to survive, it has to protect its own interests.

Israel's moral position would be much stronger if it was not occupying Palestinian territory on the West Bank and making land claims based on Biblical interpretation.

I disagree. The U.S. has repeatedly sacrificed its own best interests to provide whatever arms and funding the Israelis demanded.

The Israelis cannot play the poor victim here. Look to the other countries in the M-E if you have sympathy. They have to defend themseves without having the U.S. doing their bidding.

Mr. Obama, sir. The horse you rode in on as a champion is tall, rested, fed and groomed.
Your army of supporters bristle with enthusiasm, with hope and with praise.
The day approaches, when you must stand as tall as you ever have and lead
the people who elected you (and the ones who did not) into the place of change you
fought so hard to be able to create. Every hope for the rekindling of the original
fire of the Republic is focused on you. Our patriot forebearers watch, with great
interest. We the people, have given you our trust in our votes. Get thee safely
to Washington, take the oath, and lead the people well. Your courage sets the
tone. All eyes are upon you. Carry-on...And; Godspeed

I perceive a gap in the quality control here.
When we discipline our children, we let them know what their offense is and why we are disciplining them. That way they are clear about their error and they are empowered not to repeat the mistake. The sense of community here at the Huffington Post would be amplified a great deal if the censors would clarify the "why" so that "we" learn from the process. For some reason; ostensibly the high volume of mail, we are not being given the courtesy of this. Sure would be nice if that occurred. Then even the slimy ones would learn how to conduct themselves and not be loading the reader/quality control staff down with garbage.

Precisely. He must deliver. He can do this by speaking plainly, boldly and with
no academic trappings. It soon will be the time to deliver the goods...Obama-style.
Whatever style that is. There is too much at stake right now and people are not
going to be distracted by the Paris Hiltonisms and Bad-boy athlete stories.
Crunch time. I think this work is beyond the grasp of any one human. If Barack
can leverage his charisma, there may be hope.

Obama's victory was a manifestation of the people's will. He's just a man; he's not going to save us. We save ourselves. Selecting better leaders is the first step in that process, but only a step.

This is NOT Obama's "first crisis." This is George W. Bush's final crisis. ( well, thats assuming that W doesn't go off and bomb Iran or do something stupid).

Obama is NOT President yet. He can't dispatch Hillary to the middle east since she is NOT the Sec of State. About all he can do is issue a statement that has 0 authority behind it since he has no means of implementing / enforcing HIS policy until Jan 20.

All he can do is to get his foreign policy people together and devise a plan and get things ready to go so that they can hit the ground running. Beyond that, its really up to W, Condi, et al. to deal with things....

Back in July , Obama said, “If somebody was sending rock.ets into my house, where my two daughters sleep at night, I’m going to do everything in my power to stop that,” he told reporters in S.d.e.r.o.t, a small city on the edge of Gaza that has been hit repeatedly by rock.et fire. “And I would expect I.sraelis to do the same thing.”

And since it's being used in a comment on HP he had to say it with periods in certain words!

Ms. Weiner:

How is the current situation in Gaza a first test for Obama, especially since he not the president? As I am sure you are aware, America has one president at the time, therefore, your headline does not apply to Obama.

We read and blogg at Huffington Post because we are tired of the tabloid news reported by America's corporate media. But lately, Huffington Post writers are becoming more like the media we despise. Your headline is exactly the type one would find in the tabloids. You should understand, we will read your articles without the sensationalism you seen to feel is necessary.

Ms, Weiner, America is not the same place as it was 8 years ago. The American people realize we have been occupied with propaganda by our corporate media while meaningful news goes unreported as Americans have been distracted while our treasury is being looted. I am tired of the double standard applied on a daily basis to Obama. Why is he responsible for everything happening in the America and abroad before he is inaugurated? You should direct these matters to President Bush, after all he is the president. Once Obama has been sworn in as president then, and only then should he address these issues.

Sincerely,

HuffingtonPost Fan

Hmmm....what was that the VPE Biden state about a month ago: "Obama will be tested internationally" (paraphrasing) and Biden was taken to task and news media were all over that stating it was just another 'gaffe' of Biden's. They might want to start listening to a guy who has over 30 years of foreign policy experience.

With over 200 countries in the world right now - and a million "powder-keg" situations - OF COURSE, Obama would be tested - so would have McCain - so would have Clinton - so would have any person - no matter who they were - been elected President of the United States - and no matter how you look at it - the odds were in favor of a blowup in the Middle East - involving Israel........and or the Palestinians - get real people!!!!!

Who says they aren't listening to him?

The whole reason that it was a gaffe is because the statement implied that Obama would be test and McCain would not. Biden had to clarify that BOTH men would be tested. The gaffe gave the Republicans fodder to go after Obama as inexperienced, untested, and weak.

He has no official power at this point, it doesn't matter what he wants to do .. that time is not yet here. You need to get your president, the one who is there now to give some sort of comment that will appease you.

Excellent point that must be made repeatedly until January 20.

It's incredible to realize how many people fail to realize that our do-nothing president is still very much in charge, and that his present inaction is not a variant of his leadership style.

Despite the asinine fawnings of his otherwise tolerable wife, Bush is the worst president ever. Historians will one day marvel over the blindness of those who believed in him.

How about someone with a degree in political science? Will that be sufficient?

Bush Jr has abandoned the presidency, except for the parties and the parting gifts he can give to his friends. This leaves America basically without a functioning president.

Obama's lofty statement, "There can only be one president at a time," is unrealistic when there is no functioning president.

Obama has had no problem taking actions to shore up the economy (i.e., timed release of his appointments to offset expected bad economical news), and he had no problem whatsoever repeatedly saying during his campaign what he would do differently from Bush Jr.

I can see no reason why Obama cannot give his opinion, or make other statements, that will clarify the foreign policy road America can expect to be driven down in the Obam bus. This would provide reassurance that Obama does have plans, and may even exert enough leadership that those forces who want to pull crap before Jan. 20 will think twice about doing it.

BTW, I also have a degree in ag science and horticulture. If you have any plant, landscaping or crop questions, I would be glad to answer those, as well :-)

"No Comment" is ESPECIALLY appropriate from the President-Elect.

Senators, pundits, ex-officials can shoot off their mouths as much as they want, but not the PE less than a month before the transition.

And it does not matter who the PE is.

There's complete POWER VACUUM in the WhiteHouse now. Any careful observer can see that. Ob the gentleman and constitutional scholar would have to change hats and act now to fill the vacuum, Assert moral authority and behind-the-scene authority to stop the momentum of Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza from spiralling out of control. The sign of a true future statesman for fundamental change that he aspires to be.is to take charge and direct the course of events, instead of the other way around. Thiss is no time to "stand on ceremony", and observe the academic niceties and appearance of constitutionally correct official change of power in the WhiteHouse on January 20. How he does it will distinguish a true leader from a wannabe leader.
