As the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza worsens, numerous news organizations have looked at how the crisis will challenge President-elect Barack Obama's plans for Middle East peace.

Bloomberg writes that recent events have spoiled Obama's plans for a quiet renewal of the peace process. But it also gives Obama a chance to move things in a new direction.

"The president-elect's foreign-policy brain trust very much hoped for a quiet backdrop against which to re-inaugurate the Middle East peace process," said Rogan Kersh, associate dean of New York University's Wagner School of Public Service. "That backdrop instead now looks jagged, chaotic and loud."

...

If Obama responds to the situation by taking an active role, it would contrast with the hands-off policy of Bush. The president disengaged from Middle East peacemaking until the last year of his administration, then failed to hammer out an accord as Israel dealt with political upheaval and the Palestinians remained divided.

"The problem is for eight years, there's been no adult supervision, which is what the United States can do," said James Zogby, president of the Washington-based Arab American Institute.

According to Time, Israeli leaders had hoped to put the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on "the backburner" of the new Administration, with Iran as their main focus. That no longer seems likely.

So, when he sits down at his desk in the Oval Office in January, President Barack Obama will be confronted with compelling evidence of the failure of the Bush Administration's and Israel's policy on Hamas rule in Gaza -- and with the urgency of bringing some fresh ideas to the table.

Diplomats tell the Wall Street Journal, however, that Obama will be in a very difficult situation. One former State Department adviser says the violence will only "reduce already slim odds for peace."

And the New York Times points out that for now, Obama is deferring to the current president.

Since his election, Mr. Obama has said little specific about his foreign policy -- in contrast to more expansive remarks about the economy. He and his advisers have deferred questions -- critics could say, ducked them -- by saying that until Jan. 20, only President Bush would speak for the nation as president and commander in chief. "The fact is that there is only one president at a time," David Axelrod, Mr. Obama's senior adviser, told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday, reiterating a phrase that has become a mantra of the transition. "And that president now is George Bush."

I find it interesting that everyone seems to be looking to President-elect Obama NOW for solutions to the problems with the Middle East and all the other screwups created by the Bush Administration.
Do they not realize that Obama cannot do anything until after January 20, when he becomes President?
The Bush Administration is still the sitting government, but seems to be being let off the hook.
As long as they are the government, there is only one President and GEORGE W BUSH is that President and his administration is still tasked with governing.
So, why is there almost no pressure, particularly from the press, for them to get up off their buttocks and do the job that they are being paid to do????
Does George W Bush and Co. now get a pass simply because Barack Obama prevailed in the Presidential Election?
BARACK OBAMA IS NOT THE PRESIDENT YET, so is powerless until he is. WHEW!!

Barack should speak out, condemning this massacre. All public figures should speak out against this. One Israeli killed; for that this genocide! Write to Obama. I already have. Tell him to speak out against the Israelis.

A statement was already issued by Axelrod, in support of Israel.

That absolutely will not change.

If this is Obama's first crisis, then with me he already got an 'F'.
He is acting like a puppet without spine to face Isreal with the truth.

How can we equate rockets fired by Hamas to the massive military attacks by the Isreali murderers? How?

Obama! This is not the reason I voted for you. I voted for CHANGE and not to continue the Status Quo with regards to Isreal.

Foreign Policy is the ONE change in the election pledges I HOPE fall quick and sudden

PEACE on EARTH, GOOD WILL to MAN. You cannot kill Iraqi, Afghani and Pakistani and Palistini Civilians and call it peaceful coexistance.

Go Obama go! Restrict the CIA, lower the DOD and National Security Budgets and make human and social value and right mean what they are. Not WAR or Murder. Win peace through civil prosperity to all and not only the FEW.

Hey! I thought the economy was Obama's first test. Or was it Hillary Clinton's appointment ... or was that Warren's inaugural prayer? He's had more than his share of first tests! Sooner or later don't we have to start counting past 1?

And don't we usually start counting AFTER someone is actually president? In 20 days this could all be over like in Lebanon - and Obama's problem will be cleaning the cluster blomblets out Gaza's school yards and playgrounds (and helping the resulting armless/legless children).

Whoever makes the headlines around here really needs a new job.

At least we know Hillary Clinton would NOT have been cleaning out the cluster bombs, since she voted against banning them.

The NObama Doctrine is taking shape - ever changing as the Bush Doctrine, but it has a central theme - the right to SELF-DEFENSE. P-E NObama has stated as much towards the India-Pakistan issues and WILL come out with strong support for Israel. Though urging the ever, PC position of 'showing restraint'. He cannot, in NO WAY fathomable, favor HAMAS or HEZBULLAH in this fight. If he does, he will be seen as a weak and naive President before he even takes office, which most on the RIGHT believe anyway..........

If you tell Israel they won't continue to get billions of dollars if they don't wrap this up quickly they will figure a way to work this out. They are killing women and children.

This is humorous, President elect Obama is not president yet.

This is just another mess by George Bush. His refusal to make Isreal follow international law or for that matter his refusal to follow international law himself has caused this mess.

THIS IS GEORGE BUSH"S CRISES!!

Of course we rationally minded people will have to clean up another Republican Disaster.

This is his first international crisis. But then again it was also Georgia/Russia, Pakistan/India. So I do see your point. I've never seen more speculating about an incoming President at this level. Its reach such epic proportions that its madness. We have a President what is he doing about the situation that should be the focus.

Israel knows that Obama will be preoccupied with domestic problems and our own wars in the ME when he takes office. They also get a 20+ day window to act without any restraint.
